Description from owner

Description

Our house is based in the lost village of San Pietro della Ienca in Abruzzo, at the feet of the Gran Sasso Mountain.

Ancient shepherd's house, it has been renovated recently with the old stones.

It is composed of:

- a garden running around the house

- a dining room with kitchen area and fireplace

- 2 bathrooms

- a bedroom with wood mezanine (2 queen-size beds)

- and the jewel of the house: a cave inside, where we keep and you can taste our wines of Abruzzo!

The house is the perfect place where you can enjoy a relaxing holiday, in the hearth of an uncontaminated Nature, in the Gran Sasso National Park. From here, you can enjoy amazing hikes on the highest mountain of Appennini or visit the solitary Saint Frank's hermitages.

Just few kilometres away, there is the ski resort and a horseriding school.

If you are intersted in culture, you can visit the mysterious and beautiful city of L'Aquila or the faboulous Castle

Location description from owner

The Abruzzo region

Abruzzo is the greenest Region of Europe, with three National Parks (Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, Majella National Park and Abruzzo National Park), one Regional Park (Velino - Sirente National Park) and several smallest Nature Reserves.

Abruzzo is in the middle of Italy, next to Lazio and Rome. It's the Region with a wild and uncontaminated Nature, with a protected fauna living free in the National Parks; so, during your holidays here, you can meet chamoises, wolves, wild boars and the famous "Marsicano" bear!

But Abruzzo is not mountains, only! It got a beautiful, with a blue sea. The most of beaches are large and very easy to reach. In the south part of Abruzzo, instead, you can find beaches with rocks and amazing landscapes; here, "Trabocchi" embellish the beaches: they are ancient wood machine to fish and, today, have been renovated and become romantic restaurant on the sea...

Then, Abruzzo got several ancient villages, where the time got stopped. Here, you can find a slow lifestyle as in the past. The traditions, the old recipes and some of the old jobs keep being alive!

The Abruzzo, without tourists and the damages of a massive tourism, is the land of the Italian past! It's the real Italian past!

L'Aquila

La Grotta del Papa Holiday Home is located in the lost village of San Pietro della Ienca, an ancient shepherds village at an altitude of 1100 metres. Just some stone houses are in the village, ancient shepherds houses like La Grotta del Papa. All the houses are built around a beautiful small stone church, where, in the past, the shepherds listened the Mass on Sunday, before guiding their sheep to the high ground pastures. Today, that church has been renovated and, keeping its old shape, has become the first Pope John Paul II's Official Sanctuary, because it was the Pope Wojtyla's favourite place. In this small church, he came to find his tranquillity and inspiration.

The village of San Pietro della Ienca is located just at the feet of the Gran Sasso Mountain, the highest mountain of Appennini, in the Gran Sasso National Park! From here, you can enjoy several hikes through the mountain paths, amazing landscapes, and the close ski resort.

If you got a car, you can visited the close medieval village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Castel del Monte or the fabulous Castle of Rocca Calascio (the famous Castle, where the movie "The name of the Rose" was set!).

Do you like the mountain so much, but would you enjoy a swim in the Abruzzo's sea? You can! The sea coast and the beaches are just 1 hour faraway from La Grotta del Papa, by car!

Do you know another better place, where spend your holidays in Abruzzo?
