Description

Villa Mimosa is one of 4 villas generously spaced around a large swimming pool surrounded by beautiful gardens, enjoying a superb location in the traditional coastal village of Kypseli. The gentle pace of village life here lends itself perfectly to simple, relaxed tourism, but it's central situation along the east coast gives Kypseli the advantage of being an ideal base from which to explore the entire island too.

If you ever get tired of relaxing by the pool, the local beach with it's clean and clear sea....safe for swimming and perfect for snorkelling.... is a short stroll away down a quiet, narrow country road. Two of the best fish tavernas on the island are to be found along the shoreline here, and the village also boasts another two restaurants, a beach-side garden bar and also two grill houses......and all are within easy walking distance of the villa. But as well as a fully fitted and equipped kitchen, Villa Mimosa has it's own stone-built barbeque,

Location description from owner

The Ionian Islands region

Zakynthos is the southernmost of the seven islands that make up the chain known as the "Ionian Islands". It enjoys the most hours of sunshine per year of any of the Greek islands, and enjoys a sheltered climate thanks to the protection offered by the imposing Mount Ainos over on neighbouring Kefalonia. Spring is truly beautiful, with the entire countryside covered in wild flowers.

The soil on Zakynthos is rich and fertile, supporting a thriving and diverse agricultural industry. Everywhere you go there are well tended olive groves, and the entire island makes superb olive oil. Kypseli is well known for it's citrus fruits, melons and vegetables, whilst the north of the island has wonderful wild herbs and grazing for sheep, making it the place to go for local honey and cheeses. The south has pasture lands for pigs, so pork is their speciality , and the central plain that runs through the island is perfect vine-growing country, so wine is their main product.

The island is relatively small and easy to travel around, but the bus services are sporadic and unreliable (to say the least!). Taxis are usually plentiful and have set fares for all destinations. Although a hire-car is not strictly necessary for a holiday in Kypseli, I would recommend it... even if only for a couple of days... to have the independance and opportunity of exploring more of this stunningly beautiful island.

Kypseli

No trip to Zakynthos would be complete without a visit to the famous Blue Caves and the Shipwreck. One of the best ways to do this is by speedboat, which leaves from the nearby harbour of Tsilivi in the morning and gets you back by early afternoon. Alternatively you can drive to either Porto Vromi or Skinari and hire one of the small boats that are there waiting to take you, which makes a great day out too.

Another must is a trip out to see the turtles as they lounge in the bay waiting for nightfall to come onshore and lay their eggs. The turtles and their nesting grounds are very strictly protected, and the programme takes great care to ensure that these magnificent creatures are safeguarded to ensure their continued survival. Approved turtle-spotting trips are available daily from the beach at Laganas.

Anyone lucky enough to be in Kypseli on July 26th will experience the warmth, energy and friendliness of the locals as they invite you to join in their "panayiri"....a local celebration for the saint of our church here, which culminates in an evening of dancing, drinking and general merry-making not just for the villagers, but for visitors alike. Great fun!

The main religious festival of the island takes place in August to celebrate the island's patron saint...St. Dionysis. It is held in Zakynthos Town (12kms.), and is in the evening of August 24th, but is preceeded by a week of festivities including a huge travelling market, road-side stalls, a funfair and other celebrations. Not to be missed if you're here on this date!

Kypseli beach is undeveloped and unspoilt, just perfect for swimming and snorkelling. However, nearby Tsilivi (4 kms.) offers a large range of watersports on the beach, and also has a good water park. Alykes (7 kms.) has watersports to offer as well, and it's also possible to hire small boats from the beach here too ( passport required).

Not surprisingly, there are no A.T. M machines in Kypseli, but Tsilivi has plenty. The major banks are all in Zakynthos Town.

Hopefully you won't be needing them on your holiday, but the nearest pharmacy and doctor's surgery are 4kms. away in Tsilivi, and the island's hospital is in the town, 12 kms. away.

“WOW”

Reviewed 16 May 2013

So much thought, love and attention has been put into the building, maintaining and the running of this fabulous villa complex on the gorgeous Greek island of Zakynthos. Set on the edge of the village of Kypseli amongst the olive groves the villas are spotlessly clean and well equipped. We love to cook and ate freshly prepared local food at our villa most nights . Including using the stone built BBQ twice. The organic eggs and olive oil produced by Diana and Lakis (the owners) are delicious. The villa has three terraces so you can find the sun whatever time of day, with views from the upper terrace across to the neighbouring Island of Kefalonia . Great place for that relaxing late evening night cap! We visited out of season early May 2013 , weather was gorgeous and we had the privilege of experiencing the Greek Orthodox Church Easter celebrations. Our transfer from the airport was easy and inexpensive , as was hiring a car to visit more of this wonderful Greek Island. Thanks to the effort that Diana and Lakis put into running these villas our holiday was both extremely relaxing and very cultural. The perfect combination. We are planning our return visit which I think says it all. All I can say is go ahead book and ENJOY......

“Relaxation in the sun”

Villa Mimosa offers a haven of rest and relaxation with easy access to a host of beaches, bays and coves - and all of the commercial attractions of a Greek holiday destination - if you want them! And that's the point - the gift shops, water parks and pedalos are no more than a ten minute drive away but a five minute stroll will take you to a picturesque beach (albeit pebbles), taverna and beach bar and a three minute stroll in the other direction will find you at a small supermarket, local baker and another taverna. But why leave the peaceful sanctity of Villa Mimosa - with its private pool (shared with the three other villas) and all the domestic facilities you could need ? One reason why you might leave Villa Mimosa and it's pool might be to hire a self-drive motor boat to access the nearby blue caves or shipwreck beach (inaccessible by road) or to visit the owners' taverna in nearby Tsilivi - The Olive Tree - which undoubtedly gave us the finest eating experience of the holiday (although at an appropriate price). Villa Mimosa was more than adequately equipped and, through the delightful Olympia, was kept spotless. The owners, Diana and Lakis, are charming and attentive - and they will be seeing us again! The downsides? Not many - the greek drivers are mad, the whisky in the airport duty-free is dearer than Tesco at home and the glorious sunsets don't last long enough.
