Location description from owner

The Lochalsh region

The house is ideally situated for those wishing to explore the west of Scotland. The house is just 5 miles from the Skye Bridge - and who doesn't love Skye? but the mainland has its own attractions from the gems of Plockton, Applecross and GlenElg to the more than 30 Munroes (mountains over 3000ft) within a 30 minutes drive of the house.

Day trips all over Skye, as far as Inverness, to Loch Ness, to the wonderful Glen Elg Ferry (the original Skye Ferry) are all possible.

Kyle of Lochalsh

The house is the last in a small row of houses elevated on the hill overlooking Kylerhea - the strait between Skye and mainland Scotland. Our guests love watching the every changing view and the boats navigating this highly tidal water.

Paths lead direct from the house into an area of mixed forestry and an extensive network of paths across the Lochalsh penisula. Views from above the house reach to Torridon, Kintail, Knoydart, and the Skye Cullins.

The National Trust for Scotland manage the adjacent Balmacara Estate and there are lovely woodland walks by the shore nearby for those who prefer gentler exercise (and for shelter when its windy).

“Holidays in Scotland”

Reviewed 24 Sep 2015

We liked the seize of the house and the rooms. The kitchen is well equipped and the utility room as well. So are the other rooms. The view from the living-room is fantastic even if there isn't any sunshine. Debra gave us a warm welcome with a nice bottle of wine and some cookies. Even tea, coffee and a lot of other stuff was provided. We had a wonderful time there.

Thank you. Glad you had a good stay.

“OUTSTANDING”

Reviewed 3 Jul 2015

Varis is in the perfect location for exploring the surrounding area, within very easy reach of Balmacara Square, Plockton, Skye, Eilean Donan Castle etc. The house itself was in lovely condition, with beautiful views over the loch, and as soon as we closed the gates it was safe for our two dogs to roam around the generous garden. The owners seemed to have thought of everything, making the house really feel like a home from home - the Welcome folder was full of really useful and helpful information about places to visit and places to eat, though we tended to cook our evening meals at the house. The kitchen has everything you could need and it was a pleasure to look out over the loch while having our meal. There is an extremely well-stocked Spar (with Post Office) within easy walking distance, next door to the Balmacara Hotel where there is a very popular restaurant, a friendly bar and an outdoor seating area overlooking the shoreline. We will definitely be back!

Thanks so much. Glad you enjoyed your stay.

“It was a fabulous location”

Reviewed 3 Jul 2015

We really enjoyed our holiday. The bungalow was lovely, very comfortable and in a fabulous location. It was very quiet and peaceful. There were lots of lovely walks around the area and we enjoyed watching all the birds in our garden. We were able to tour around and the scenery is absolutely terrific. The local supermarket had a good selection of beer! Our hosts were very obliging to us as we had to cancel our first holiday we booked due to a surprise stay in hospital and they kindly allowed us to re-book without losing our deposit, which was a very generous thing to do. The only slight criticism is that when we stayed we had a very cold snap of weather and it wasn't always as warm as we would have liked in our bedroom although the lounge was lovely and warm.

Thanks for that. Sorry about the cold bedroom : guests can control the heatng and in addition, just in case of need, there is a very efficient fan heater provided. I must put a note about the fan heater in the House Folder. Thanks for the prompt.

“Lovely setting for a relaxing holiday”

So pleased you enjoyed your stay. There is plenty to do in the area - rain or shine.

“Lovely house in a great location!”

Reviewed 29 Aug 2014

We really enjoyed our stay at Varis. It's in a good central location that is perfect for exploring the area. The house had everything we needed and was clean and nicely decorated. The beds were comfy and there were loads of wardrobes for storage space. The local shop is within 5 minutes’ walk of Varis and is well stocked with everything you could need. We have family in the area that we visit each year, so hopefully we will stay again!

Those comments are very much appreciated and we will continue to work to make Varis a great place to stay.

“A clean and comfortable home from home.”

Reviewed 29 Aug 2014

Really enjoyed our stay at Varis during August 2014. The house was very clean and well equipped with all the things you could possible need and more. The views were stunning and there were easily accessible walks on the doorstep. It is in an ideal location for exploring the Isle of Skye and surrounding area. The property provides extremely comfortably facilities which creates a home from home feeling when staying there. The snug has Wifi facility and the bedrooms are spacious with extremely comfortable beds and luxurious bedding. The kitchen provides all the usual home comforts and there is also a large utility room which is useful for storing/drying outdoor clothing. The owner has thought of all of the needs of the visitor and has provided extensive information about the local area and walks available. This is definitely a property I would revisit and would recommend it to other visitors to the area.

Thank you. We look forward to seeing you again.
