AIR VILLEKULLA is an Artist in Residency guesthouse situated in Kommetjie, Cape Town. The area is a delightful and relaxing artist and fishing village 30 kilometres from the City Centre. Owned and run by Yvonne Rüegg, an accomplished Swiss artist, she has exhibited her paintings in many countries and in book form. Yvonne is also President of the AIR VILLEKULLA Association, which belongs to the Swiss Association Artist in Residency. She is writing her Master thesis in Art, Education & Society. Her research is in the field of “Artist in Residency” and is being done through the University of the Arts in Zürich.
The guesthouse is in a sublime natural surrounding within walking distance to white sandy beaches. Far from the hustle and bustle of fast paced city life, AIR VILLEKULLA guesthouse offers artists, and other guests, an environment to stimulate their creative process and passion in any field of art. AIR VILLEKULLA, which means “colourful” in Swedish, provides artists with the opportunity to extend their networks and build up collaborations with other local and international artists and guests. A key focus of this project is Cultural and inspirational exchange. AIR VILLEKULLA also provides a platform to establish workshops, exhibitions and performance possibilities within various disciplines of Artistic expression.
The guesthouse comprises four elegantly furnished and stylishly decorated rooms, a spacious studio, a pleasant garden and swimming pool. The centrepiece of the house is a 70m2 open plan lounge with a magnificently large dining room table.
A study and library upstairs is also available to those interested in gaining new inspirations. Once a month AIR VILLEKULLA offers an open studio evening where artists and guests can take the opportunity to showcase their work to an interested audience.
We look forward to welcoming you to AIR VILLEKULLA. We are certain that your stay with us will be inspiring, beneficial and relaxing.
Our house has four very nice guest rooms, bathrooms, kitchen for self catering, a garden with a large swimming pool, a nice library, a guest bar, a large studio for painting and plenty of space for encounters, surrounded by the “Table Mountain National Park” which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located about 250m away from the beach on which many surfers gather each night to wait for the perfect wave.
On request we cook for you a lovely dinner served at the pool (fish and pasta specialties)
Kommetjie is a small, sunny fishing village on the Atlantic coast of the Cape Peninsula and is known for beautiful sunsets and white beaches which extend for miles. The picturesque village has a small central shopping street, the shops for basic needs, a library, a post office, a hairdresser, a video library, three restaurants, a surf shop, a pharmacy and a gas station and two “pubs” that are within walking distance. Kommetjie has three churches, including the Rubbi Chapel on the mountain next to the monastery. Built in 1906, the ”Slangkop” Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse on the South African coast.
About 2 km before Kommetjie is the Imhoff Farm which is famous for its old colonial building with a variety of shops, the local arts and crafts and much more to offer, and has its own dairy. In the restaurants you can eat very good and cheap, like almost everywhere in the Cape.
Kommetjie is still relatively undiscovered and offers quiet places away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Therefore, I was convinced by the quality of life for artists in this place. The place is also very inspiring due to the proximity to the multicultural Cape Town, which has a variety of museums, which are especially numerous because of the rich history. Meanwhile, Cape Town has overtaken Johannesburg as an art centre and offers numerous concerts, art galleries, festivals, theatres and traditional as well as contemporary art. The cultural life of South Africa took place in an insignificant sideshow during the apartheidera to the end of the eighties because many cultural activities were suppressed (censorship, cultural boycott, inadequate education system). Now the inhabitants of the “New South Africa” ??have a revived awareness of their own culture and are also interested in the cultures of other ethnic groups.
