Description from owner

Vouno villa (Mountain villa) is a tastefully furnished 3 bed villa and was built out of local stone using traditional methods, finished to the very highest standard.

The pool and pergola'd BBQ terrace are set up above the house, further up the hillside where you can while away the day in the pool whilst the eagles soar above your head or enjoy the nightime atmosphere with the blanket of stars above your head and the lights of the Venetian city of Chania twinkle down the bay. The house has two beautiful verandas at the front, one downstairs where alfresco eating is a pleasure and one upstairs that stretches the full width of the house and is furnished with a comfortable sofa and chairs. It also has a covered veranda at the side of the house, for shade from the sun. Also now with WIFI.

The pool area, as mentioned is set further up the mountain, TOTALLY private (Only the odd goat will see you skinny dip!) and is gated off for safety, so those with small children need not worry

It also has a covered veranda at the side of the house, for shade from the sun. Also now with WIFI.

The pool area, as mentioned is set further up the mountain, TOTALLY private (Only the odd goat will see you skinny dip!) and is gated off for safety, so those with small children need not worry about them gaining access without parental supervision. The pool is 40sq metres in size, 1.2 metres at the shallow end and 1.8 metres at the deep end and is professionally cleaned and maintained. This area has comfortable sunloungers and sunshades for six people. The BBQ terrace has been planted out with local fruit trees and shrubs (2008). We have just completed (At great expense), an outdoor kitchen type area so that you can happily stay here all day and night if desired. We have a huge traditional stone charcoal BBQ to cook on here and a large table with six comfortable chairs, also a large pergola covering the whole area planted with local grapevines which add to the ambience up here. Perfect for an evening meal amongst the stars, or a midnight swim!

The house is perfectly set mid-way between Chania and Rethymno and great for exploring the less well known parts of West Crete as well as the fabulous cultures of the two cities mentioned.

The surrounding area is great for walking and exploring the flora and fauna of Crete and there are also fabulous little beaches in the area and numerous great tavernas and restaurants. The beautiful cities of Chania and Rethymon are around 30mins away each side of the villa where you can soak up the Venetian architecture, the Minoan archaelogical sites and the forts left from rule by the Turks. The more recent history is visable from the villa as up above the pool there still exists a WWII German bunker. This, for the brave, can be explored as it leads down to a series of caves and tunnels which eventually come out at the ruins of the monastry down below our house. There is a little church here called St Georges which is tiny and is still used. You will hear the bells softly peel out here on holy days.

From the verandas and the pool areas you can also watch the NATO vessels sail out into the Aegean, aircraft carriers, submarines, ferrys and smaller fishing craft, the bay always has something interesting to watch.

We like to think that our house offers something for everyone what ever age, excitement or rest, both are here.

Further details outdoors

The upstairs veranda is furnished with a comfortable sofa and chairs and is perfect for hiding away with a good book and a glass of wine. The downstairs veranda has a marble table and captains chairs for six to eight people and is beautiful to sit at for an evening meal whilst watching the sun go down beneath the White Mountains. The covered veranda is perfect for early morning coffee and baklava, or should you wish to hide away from the sun for a while. There is also comfortable seating here. The covered veranda looks out one side onto Souda bay and the other out onto the Aegean sea, a paved area just beside this is perfect for small children playing under the watchful eye of mum or dad.

The BBQ terrace is set further up the mountain, accessible up limestone steps and gated off to keep small children (And goats) out. The pool is set in this area also and is 40 sq metres with Roman steps at the shallow end and an access ladder at the deep end.It is 1.2 metres at the shalow end and 1.8 metres at the deepest end.
The views from this area cannot be described other than being simply breathtaking. At night can be seen displays of shooting stars from this large terrace.

The pool area is furnished with top quality sunlongers and sunshades. It also has an outside shower, should it be required. The BBQ terrace is furnished with a large table and captains chairs for comfort. We try to improve the house every year and this year completed the planting of fruit trees and shrubs around the terrace. November '08 saw the completion of an outdoor kitchen being built and a huge pergola, planted with local grapevines.

The Chania Prefecture region

With 300 days of sunshine every year this island is like a country in minature. There is so much to see and enjoy, be it the history of the migration of 13,000 Venetians(20% of the population of Venice) in the 13th Century, who left behind beautiful tall Itallinite buildings and narrow cobbled streets along with their culinary influences and glass craft or the invasion of the Turks in 1680, whose great towering forts and buildings can be easily seen around the whole island.
The West of the island is incredibly lush and verdant and has the greatest number of wildflowers in the whole of Europe. The area where Villa Vourno is located is famous for the White mountains or Lefka Oria, which provide the stunning backdrop to the city of Chania. Chania itself has many wonderful shops and sights to see including the Old Cross Market where you will find every type of fresh local produce imaginable.

Kokkino Chorio

Chania is a Venetian city full of a mix of cultures and influences left from rule by the Venetians, the Turks, and more recently from the German occupation in WWII. Near to the house is the fort of Apetera which is thought to be around 4 thousand years old, and if you wander around both Chania itself and the large village near to the house, of Almyrida, you will easily see the excavation sites and beautiful mosaics on the floors of ancient villas inhabited by Cretean people of long ago.
The monastry below the villa has a series of caves which lead up eventually to an old German WWII bunker, this should only be attempted by those brave enough, with a torch and a love of small furry rodents!

The village of Kokkino Chorio itself is where the village scenes for Zoba the Greek where filmed in 1963 and is still recognisable as the same village even today. During the local religious festival (August) you will be warmly welcomed by the locals in the square to an evening of music, local wine and great food done on the spit roast.
This is the real Crete, enough of the infrastructure to have everything you need without all the tourists.

For younger visitors there is a fabulous water park, and go-kart circuit, around 30mins drive away from the villa on the far side of Chania at Limassol. You could quite happily spend a whole day here without getting bored. Lake Kornos is also worth a visit as the only fresh water lake in Crete. Here you can rent a pedalo, swim or generally take in the easy going atmosphere in one of the lake side tavernas. Across a little from Kornos is the long beach of Georgiopoli were the breakers from the Aegean make exciting swimming. There is also horse riding here and a few beachside tavernas. Inland, in the town of Vamos there is a lovely museum which tells the story of the local textile industry and how this has been revived by local women. Easter is also a truly wonderful time to visit the island as most of the major religious festivals take place then and the whole island comes out to celebrate, visitors cannot help but be drawn in.
In the slightly larger town of Kalives is a beautiful Greek Orthodox church, used on an almost daily basis, the doors are nearly always open and it is worth a peak inside just to see the amazing murals painted high on the ceilings and walls, opposite this church is the old water mill with an adjoining restaurant, the food here is excellent. You can while away a couple of hours over lunch while kids can play safely in the little square in front of the restaurant.
The smaller village of Almyrida has a great blue flag beach and restaurants right on the beach front. Our children have been known to finish dinner then play with their local friends on the beach as late as 11p.m.(No need to mention how wet and sandy their clothes were on return!!) . There is also a hotel here and several nice tavernas were local and live music can be enjoyed.
The larger town of Kalives (Where the church is) also has a great beach, more shingly in nature, this also has restaurants on the beach front and the larger hotel has just opened a bowling alley if you feel energetic!
There are too many wonderful sights to see and great things to do to mention here, my recommendation would be to spend every other day visiting somewhere new, and use the great facilities of the house inbetween.

“Beautiful villa in a beautiful setting.”

Reviewed 20 Oct 2015

Lovely villa - clean, spacious and well equipped. The pool is simply stunning - if a little cold at first! The uninterrupted views of Souda Bay are breathtaking. BBQ facilities are excellent, couldn't ask for more. Catherine has been very helpful throughout - from booking, to directions and recommendations of what to do in the local area. The situation of the villa is very convenient from Chania airport and once you've found it once you realise it is very straightforward to get to. It is a good base to explore Chania and the surrounding areas and also Rethymno. A car is a must in this villa. The nearest beach at Almyrida is only a 10 minute drive away but it is not walkable due to the mountainous terrain!

Thanks so much Lydia for taking the time to leave a review, it was our pleasure to have you stay and I hope your holiday keeps you going for many months to come. The pool is definitely warmer in the Spring and Summer.......although my boys are in it now as I type.....on the 21st Oct!!!! It's warmer at night than during the day at this time of year!!!! Thanks again and best regards, Catherine

“The perfect getaway”

Reviewed 1 Oct 2015

This trip is our 6th visit to the villa. We travel throughout the UK and Europe on a regular basis but always find ourselves looking forward to our time at Villa Vouno the most. The first time we stayed there the views took our breath away, I proposed to my partner on the upstairs balcony one evening a couple of years ago and we will honeymoon there next year. Catherine's help with hints and tips has been priceless, just as knowing that Anne & Richard are there locally to help with any small issues. Hints and tips from us, shop at In.ka on the way from the airport, take in the views as you travel from Chania, use the local shop in Kokkino Chorio, visit Aptera, freeze your bread and take it out daily, drink boutari wine, Mythos beer is better than Amstel, cook at home some evenings and enjoy the sunset, find out when the Tavern is open (Weds - Sun), use the taxis and meet them at St Georges Retreat, take a torch when going to the Tavern, use Express VPN over wifi to get SkyGo or iPlayer, download movies before leaving the UK and connect to the TV using cables or Chromecast and enjoy a night in if the weather turns bad, read the restaurant reviews from other guests, the best guide book ever. Cheers to Catherine, Anne & Richard, we'll be back, again!

Hi Guys, As usual you have been the perfect guests and we are always glad to welcome you back year after year. It's lovely having guests who enjoy the place as much as we do and have become part of the Villa Vouno family! Anne says I have to request guests like yourselves every time from now on!! Thanks again for leaving a fab review....til next time. Best Regards, Catherine

“Returning is such sweet joy!”

Reviewed 11 Sep 2015

After the joy of last year it was a no-brainer to return. For longer this time. The 'golden hour' as the sun begins to set is as exquisite as ever, because the views over Souda Bay and the mountains are so spectacular. We were a party of 8, 2 of whom being replaced by other family members half way through our stay (the villa sleeps 6) and everyone was impressed by the beauty of the place. We did have a water issue in which a leak caused the tank to empty, but Manolis was swiftly sent with his truck to fill the tank, and the owner immediately booked us a room in nearby Almyrida so that we could shower. There is an abundance of excellent restaurants to choose from and just a short drive away. If you don't want to drive, you can eat next door as St George retreat restaurant, or walk to the village of Kokkino Chorio.

Hi Jim, Many thanks for leaving a review; we are so glad that you all enjoyed your holiday. It was unfortunate about the water shortage on the Sunday and as you know we got water to you less than 24 hrs later; it turned out that there was an only partially repaired pipe in a neighbouring village, so although our village was getting water, it was very, very, little and with us being up higher than everyone else, we got last.....all sorted now though. I hope your holiday keeps you going for many months to come. As you quite rightly say there are loads of great places to see and eat and usually not enough time to enjoy them all. Best regards, Catherine

“Perfect, relaxing family holiday in the sun”

Reviewed 19 Aug 2015

We loved staying at Villa Vouno - the living areas were spacious, the facilities were top notch and the views were stunning! We stayed here with our three teenage children and we all had a lovely relaxing holiday - swimming in the pool, lazing on the terraces and watching the amazing sunsets. The air conditioning and wi-fi were much appreciated by all. Our travels took us all over Crete, which is a charming country with many contrasts, but we were always keen to come back to our villa at the end of each day. We would recommend Villa Vouno and the Kokkino Chorio area wholeheartedly.

Hi Kathryn, Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review; I do appreciate it as it gives prospective guests a chance to see what a recently returned guest thinks of the place! Hope your holiday keeps you going for many months to come and that we see you all again soon. Best Regards, Catherine

“Picturesque, relaxing getaway”

Reviewed 5 Aug 2015

We would thoroughly recommend staying at Villa Vouno. Catherine (the owner) is very friendly and helpful, answered our questions quickly and supplied lots of information (e.g. car rental companies, local area guides) before we arrived. The villa is very well maintained and furnished/equipped with everything you might need for your stay. Villa Vouno is about 10-15 mins drive from Almyrida (the nearest seaside resort) so you can easily access shops etc but this also means that the villa is relatively remote and therefore very quiet and relaxing. The nearest airport is at Chania which was approximately 45 minutes away by car. We had a very relaxing week and in the end spent most of our time in the villa. In particular, the pool/garden area and outdoor BBQ were lovely places to watch the beautiful sunset. On a more general note, we found the Cretan people to be very friendly and the food was brilliant, lots of cheese and ouzo was consumed! Highly recommended, thanks very much Catherine.

Hi Thom, Many thanks for your lovely review! We feel exactly the same....the place is so hard to leave as are the people. In all the Irish rain, it really makes my day to hear how much guests have enjoyed the place and keeps me sane when it is pelting down outside. I love it even more when guests indicate that they are very keen to come back!!! Many thanks again.....until you are out next time! Catherine

“Wonderfully quiet and superb location”

We had a wonderful two weeks at this lovely villa, witnessing some smashing sunsets from our verandah. For us it was perfectly placde, just 10 minute drive from several taverna's in Plaka and couple of minutes on and you're in the harbour and beach resort of Almyrid. The Villa has everything you need to enjoy the delights of the Greek sun, a super pool and BBQ area where you cons enjoy many a night try it to be the next BBQ Masterchef. You'll be kept well informed by Catherine, the owner, with lots of info and great direction to get there.

Hi Steve, Many thanks for your great review and for taking the time to post. We love the tavernas in Plaka too....I think Takis would be our favourite, certainly my husbands favourite anyway....but that might have something to do with the fact that Taki usually gives him and his brother a bottle of raki to take home!! thanks again for posting and I hope your holiday keeps you going until next time. Best regards, Catherine

“Our Holiday at Villa Vouno Crete”

Reviewed 1 Jun 2015

We are a family aged between 27 and 92 and we all enjoyed our holiday at Villa Vouno. Every thing was as described very clean and a much appreciated welcome pack, the views from all terraces were amazing. Our daughter and her husband really enjoyed the pool sharing it with the hornets who came every day to drink from the pool but did not seem interested in us (we were well protected by the toy soldiers left by Catherine's children). We also had a visit from a small scorpion but decided to take him for a walk half way down the drive so I don't think he will return (certainly lots of wild life though we did only hear the goats) This is definitely a very peaceful holiday. Unfortunately the Retreat taverna was only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday so we ate there only once it was good but there were lots of other places close by all of which were good and reasonable. The Botanical gardens are well worth a visit and also the Samaria Gorge just beware three of our party walked the five hours down but just missed the ferry and then had to wait four hours for the next one but luckily there were tavernas on the beach. Captain Nick's glass bottom boat in Chania was a great trip and we saw octopus, sea urchin and star fish do take swimming things to go snorkelling. Everyone we met was very friendly. We really had a great holiday at Villa Vouno in Crete thank you Catherine for letting us stay at your holiday home

Hi Gwen and Family, Many thanks for taking the time to do a review. I am so glad you liked the villa and the island as well. Our setting, near the top of Cape Drapanos makes the place a haven for all sorts of light fitting on the stairwell (Gordon the Gecko!!)came after two of my regular guests (Two lovely lady lecturers from Sweden, who spend their whole time there photographing and observing the nature)alerted me to the little Gecko that lived in our outside porch!! I don't think I've ever seen Zebra butterflies as large as the ones we get flying about the I am glad you enjoyed the antics of the nature. The Samaria Gorge is fabulous, if a little challenging, however if you wanted to try the Imbros Gorge the next time, it is just as breath-taking and somewhat shorter. The taverna, I believe, opens more during the summer months, but as you say, you can't throw a stone without finding somewhere great to eat. We are very into organic food in our house, so Crete is fabulous for us because most of the food they produce is produced locally and in this way, unfortunately it has the added effect of bringing me home several pounds heavier!! Again, my thanks for leaving a review and I really do hope that you will all make it out again soon....the Greeks do brilliant centenary birthday celebrations!! Best Regards, Catherine

“Stunning location, peaceful relaxtion, unforgettable holiday”

Reviewed 25 Apr 2015

We’ve just returned from a wonderful holiday at Villa Vouno which was everything we could have asked for and more. The setting is just beautiful and so tranquil and we felt so lucky to be there from the moment we arrived. The spring flowers were lovely and we had seven days of warm April sunshine (chilly evenings, which was to be expected for the time of year). The villa is well equipped and homely and very hard to leave every day to see the sights on offer in the area and beyond (of which there are plenty). The views are stunning from every terrace (plenty to choose from) and it’s very easy just to peacefully sit and gaze and totally lose track of time. It was so relaxing lying by the pool watching the swallows and other birds swooping in and taking a quick dip, although we only braved it in once ourselves – bit chilly in April (perhaps we’re just soft!). Would recommend buying a large bag of oranges on the first day and juicing (manual juicer in the kitchen). Breakfast on the terrace by the BBQ is a great way to start the day in the warm sunshine, the only sounds you hear are the jingling of the goat/sheep bells as they make their way round the hillside behind the villa, the chirping birds and the odd hum of the bees which really didn’t bother us (they were too busy!). If you do manage to drag yourselves away, Chania old town and harbour by day and night area lovely and the ruins at Aptera were particularly pretty with all the flowers on show. Lake Kournas is great if you have kids. There are plenty of good Tavernas in Plaka, Almyrida and Kalyves and we found that everywhere we went we received a really warm and hospitable welcome. Beaches within easy reach in the car. This was our first visit to Crete and thanks to our stay at Villa Vouno I’m sure it won’t be our last. Thank you Catherine for being so helpful throughout, we really enjoyed our stay at your lovely villa and would thoroughly recommend it without reservation. Words really can’t describe what a lovely place it is.

Hi Nicky, Many thanks for your lovely review; I am so pleased that you enjoyed yourselves....your review brought all the sights sounds and heat back to mind!! I really do hope you get to come out again, as you say, there is so much to see and do!! I hope your holiday keeps you going for many months to come....or at least until you get back out again! ““Parting is such sweet sorrow””

Reviewed 8 Sep 2014

We returned yesterday from an 11 night family holiday in Villa Vouno Today we are booking our return next year! That pretty much says it all, but here is a bit more detail. Villa Vouna is just 3 minutes drive from Kokkion Chorio, 5 minutes from the larger village of Plaka, with restaurants, shops etc, about 10 from the beach at Almyrida and 50 mins from the amazingly beautiful town on Chania. So although we felt that the buzz of life was very nearby, the villa itself feels completely private as behind the villa is just the steep mountainside . Fortunately the mountains never block the sun and the views from dawn til dusk are breathtaking, and need a far better camera than ours to really capture. There are 3 balconies, the large separate bbq area and the pool area from where you can enjoy this view. Not to mention from the windows of the villa itself, which is furnished for coolness after the heat outside. Each room is air-conditioned if required. It is also equipped with modern kitchen and new fittings, with ample crockery etc. along with telly, Playstation and dvd. Wi-fi is not fast but worked fine until the last day when we lost it the “Greek BT” side of the router. The router itself was fine. We phoned Richard, the property manager, who made arrangements straight away. He came up also on the first day within 10 minutes when the water tank was empty. We spent most of our time at the Pool, which someone came early in the mornings to clean, so it was a delight to swim in and had no ‘chlorininess'. It being the end of August, there were wasps, just as in the UK, but we didn’t bother them and they didn’t really bother us; we just had to be careful not to step on them. As far as other insects go, Crete seems to be mostly immune from mosquitos and completely immune from flies! The owner, Catherine, went the extra mile to keep us informed. Her daughters’ tip for us was to go to Lake Kournos. We had a fantastic day there frolicking in the fresh water. There is something essentially hilarious about a Pedalo with a water-slide on the roof! Catherine also took the time to answer our questions and pointed us to the very good Kalives car hire people. You do need a car to stay at this villa unless you are a keen walker. Overall experience was beyond Excellent!

Hi Jim, Many thanks for leaving a review, I really appreciate it when guests take the time to do this when they've had a great time. Glad you all enjoyed's fabulous isn't it!?? It would be one of our favourite places to spend the day as well. Last time we went my horrible (Only kidding about the horrible) kids decided to leave me stranded across the far side of the lake and leave me to swim back!! Lets just say I was ready for a drink when I reached the other side, and it wasn't Fanta! I'll very much look forward to helping you all with your holiday next year....until then, I hope this keeps you going. Best Regards, catherine

“Perfect, peaceful and fun for all.”

Reviewed 15 Aug 2014

This is many holidays wrapped into one. You can have a completely peaceful uninterrupted all but the odd goat bell. Adjoined to this, quiet coves and family run tavernas in abundance or you can enjoy lively tavernas beaches that are vaguely busy with all types of non motorized water sports. Site seeing and history in a short trek to Chania, white mountains, fresh water lakes and gorges for the walkers. The beaches are all very clean and safe and snorkeling around the rocks wasted many hours for us all. You can be served on the beaches or drag yourselves 20 yards to the nearest taverna. The Villa it's self is set at the highest point on the hill side so completely secluded with stunning views of the Island and bluest of blue seas. The layout of the Villa and decor gives it a very welcoming, homely feel finished in beautiful local stone. The balconies are very large and to die for. If this isn't enough then a few steps away is the elevated pool and huge bar-b-q area where we spent many a happy evening eating and watching shooting stars. Having a car is a must which allows you to travel to many places of wonder and made it perfect for my 70 year old parents who came with us this time. We also have a 17, 12 and 8 year old who were constantly entertained at the Villa with the beautiful pool and to top it off my teenager had access to WIFI much to her delight. To top it off the owners are 100% devoted to making your stay perfect and are only a call away for any queries. There are also people living locally who work for the owners that will help you with anything that is a problem. They were all fantastic and made the whole experience an absolute pleasure. Thank you from all the Cathcart Family.

Hi Paul, Many thanks for your great review. When you were with us a few years ago, I know you were delighted then and I was anxious that you would all have a great experience this time, especially because you brought your parents. I was also particularly delighted with your news and hope that your new arrival next will also get the opportunity to visit Villa Vouno some year (Greek baby names?????...only kidding!!). Anyway, my thanks again for leaving a review and please do keep in touch; I regard everyone who loves the place the way we do as family and love to hear all their news! Til you make it out again, Best Regards, Catherine
