ENVIRONMENT & APPROACH

The Whistle is situated in rugged terrain. It is 7 miles from the nearest shop, 4 miles from the nearest pub. The final half mile of approach is over an unmade road. It is bumpy, but is passable by all but the lowest of sports cars. If need be, transport across the track can be arranged for you.

All of the facilities you will need are provided, but being 'off grid' will require you to think a little carefully when it comes to using them. We encourage careful management of power & water in an effort to minimise the impact

on this special environment.

WATER - HOT & COLD

Our water supply for washing is pumped directly from our Spring and is UV filtered. In addition, unlimited bottled water is provided for drinking. Hot water for washing dishes, for the small shower and for the bathroom basin, is powered by a gas water heater.

FOOD & COOKING

Although full cooking facilities inside The Whistle exist, cooking outside over the open fire is possible and equipment is provided for this. There's a cast iron sandwich toaster, a big, old iron cooking pot on a tripod, a grill and a Kelly Kettle all for use on the open fire either outside the hut or down by the natural pool. If you want to be a little more conventional,

a gas bbq is available. Enough firewood for a good fire is provided and more can be purchased as you want it.

Tea, coffee, hot chocolate, milk, biscuits/cake will be provided for your arrival.

The Australian fridge box will keep your food well chilled inside the hut. Ice packs will be provided as needed.

TOILET

The toilet is a Canadian waterless loo. It is the only product on the market that has NSF approval (means it doesn't smell !) There is no emptying for you to do.

HEATING

The Whistle is completely insulated and the LPG real flame fire and an Ecofan provides ample heating. Where we can, we'll help walkers who suffer with wet walking gear, to dry clothing & boots.

LIGHTING, ENTERTAINMENT, USB & ELECTRICITY

NO MAINS ELECTRICITY. There are plenty of 12v electrical lights throughout the hut. There is a 12v DC USB point for running/charging low wattage appliances should you need to. An IPOD docking station/speakers is provided. Board games, dominoes, playing cards & books are your provided entertainment.

WEATHER RESTRICTIONS ~ SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS

Weather dominates decisions in this environment. It can change rapidly, without much notice. If the snow or ice arrives, appropriate arrangements have to be made to ensure that your transport arrangements are not affected.

Location description from owner

The Wales region

Miles & miles of walks or rides can be accessed from our boundary gate: wild, heathered moors with a huge variety of wildlife including hares, badgers, polecat, elusive otters, very elusive wild horses, red kites, buzzards, curlews, peregrine, woodcock, newts & dragonfly!; rocky dingles with fast flowing streams; thick pine forests with wild mushrooms, nuts & berries to pick. And in the Spring, an opportunity to bottle feed baby lambs.  Sit and read, write, paint, draw, think or simply just sleep.  There will be nothing to disturb you.

Knighton

The small market town of KNIGHTON is 7 miles away.  It is a border town between ENGLAND & WALES and offers good eating & drinking establishments, a basic supermarket, fuel stations, a leisure centre, churches and other usual small town facilities.  It hosts OFFA'S DYKE INFORMATION CENTRE and is the only town through which OFFA's DYKE & WALK passes.

The SPACEGUARD CENTRE is a working observatory situated just outside KNIGHTON.

PRESTEIGNE, another border town, the 'Gateway To Wales', with its renowned festivals, is 13miles away.  LEOMINSTER with it's maze of antique shops is 50min drive, and the Herefordshire town of KINGTON lies 18 miles away and offers its annual Horse & Agricultural Show in September and wonderful Winter Food Festival in mid December.

The Victorian Spa Town of LLANDRINDOD WELLS is 17miles away and offers 2 x major supermarkets as well as local attractions. Walk around the lake or Rock Park, or try the Spa facilities at the classic Metropol Hotel.

The castle town of LUDLOW, with its beautifully preserved Elizabethan shops & buildings is 50 mins drive away as is BUILTH WELLS where the ROYAL WELSH AGRICULTURAL SHOW GROUND is situated, hosting many events including the annual Spring Festival for Smallholders in May, the Royal Welsh Show in July and the Winter Fair in December.

HEREFORD CITY is 1hr 10min drive away where all major facilities can be found.  The book festival town of HAY- ON-WYE is 1hr 10m drive, where kayaking along the stunning River Wye can pass an afternoon or a whole day.

The beautiful ELAN VALLEY is 1hr drive where many nature walks & cycle rides exist around wild reservoirs, over hills and along valley floors. A favourite of ours!

The seaside towns of ABERYSTHWYTH or ABERDOVEY, 1hr 35min drive.

RADNOR FOREST, with its FISHPOOLS TRAIL is 10miles from The Whistle.  The Forest's waterfall walks are in nearby WARREN WOOD, and more forest trails run through NASH WOOD.  CERI (KERRY) RIDGE, on the Shropshire side

of the hills, provides similar trails and walks through dense pine forests.

The nearest train station is at LLANGUNLLO but the nearest main station is KNIGHTON.

There is a taxi service between KNIGHTON and The Whistle.
