“comfortable & cosy”

Reviewed 20 Aug 2013

The Bear's Den is a converted barn, and the online description pictures are realistic, so it met our expectations. There were only a couple of downsides; the lack of washing machine (plus line etc), and the link for the TV was missing (although we could play our own DVD's). And the shower over the bath could do with a curtain - we regularly flooded the bathroom, and it was easy to slip on the tiled floor. But it was scrupulously clean, (thanks to the housekeeper!), beds were very comfortable, and the biggest sofas we'd ever seen! The hamlet was very peaceful, just the sounds of the farm birds and the occasional tractor. Lovely to walk along the river path (actually a cycle path), and watch the scenery unwind. An easy 20 minute stroll, flat almost all the way, across the valley to the pizzeria, which had a much more extensive menu than just pizza, for a relaxed evening. Plus good value for money. Also ate al fresco in the garden at the hotel at Waidegg - friendly staff, and more good food. At neither eatery did we feel out of place in casual wear, shorts, jeans, sandals etc, This is ideal for a relaxing break, away from the hustle & bustle of tourists, consequently - not much to do in the way of touristy/gift shopping - saves time & money!

“As magical as it looks!”

Yes, this house is completely delightful! (Ours was a February trip.) We were planning to search for my husband's ancestors when we discovered this cosy spot, and hoped we could combine the two. In fact, we abandoned the ancestors and just stayed here! The location is rural, yet close enough to the ski resorts and quaint towns. The decor is warm and inviting, with deep comfy sofas, a huge fire and snuggly colours, plus big picture windows that look out over the mountains. The best thing of all however was the snow. The house turned into a fairyland when it fell, as it was completely enfolded by it, with no ugly roads to spoil the effect. You are transported into Narnia! You can walk or cross-country ski in the surrounding woods, without even getting in the car, or skate on the huge nearby Lake Weissensee (hiring your skates there). The house is attached to the owner's one via an intercommunicating door, but you retain your own privacy. Oh, and one handy tip: we flew into Ljubljana, which was also surprisingly picturesque. Thank you for a memorable stay.

“Cosiest Ski Lodge Ever!”

The Bear's Den is located in a lovely quiet village about a 10 minute drive from the ski resort. You need a car for both getting to/from the slopes and supermarket, but it's worth the drive. The property location is lovely and quiet with good offstreet parking. Inside, it's been beautifully furnished with a lovely alpine feel. Big sofas to sink into, a huge fireplace (and good central heating!) TV, DVD etc and even a piano. The kitchen is a small (open plan onto the dining area), but well stocked with equipment and basic necessities such as tea coffee etc. Bedrooms are also very well furnished, with comfortable beds and good closet space. The bathroom is clean and has a big bath. We spent hours lounging by the fire after a day's skiing in this wonderfully converted barn. I'm definitely booking it again!

“Austrian Gem!”

We've been coming here for years and absolutely love it! Both summer and winter there is so much to do. Nassfeld is a great family ski resort not overrun by large touring companies. It's nice to ski into Italy for some lunch and come back to Austria for the apres ski. Summers are warm and you can't beat the mountain tracks for biking or hiking. The Bear's Den is well located for all facilities in a small farming community and has direct access to the trails. However I would have a rental car to get around to some of the attractions further away. The swimming pool is fantastic. It's a heated natural pool with no chemicals - like swimming in Evian! The Den itself is very comfortable and well kitted. The lounge is amazing and I love spending long winter nights in front of the large fireplace.
