Our cottage is a superb stone converted barn in the picturesque 200 year old farmstead of Higher Hendham Barns which has eight cottages. We live in Pillar Barn which is the largest cottage and have recently purchased three of the other barns to rent out for holiday lets - see links to Swallow Barn and Woodpecker Barn below. Kingfisher Barn has been furnished and equipped to provide the highest quality self catering accommodation and has been successfully rented out for holiday lets for the last ten years.

All our cottages overlook our two acre field where we have numerous chickens, three alpacas, and a large vegetable garden. We are able to provide fresh eggs and vegetables to guests. Living on-site means that we are able to meet you and to help ensure that you have everything you need for a perfect holiday

The cottage is reverse level with a stunning open plan living area on the first floor with a lounge area with two sofas, dining table for four and a recently refurbished modern kitchen with a full range of appliances - dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer, halogen hob and electric fan oven, microwave and fridge. It has oak flooring throughout the living area which is very practical and perfect for those holidaying with a dog or for families. There is also a floor to ceiling window with a very comfortable armchair and views out over the field.

The cottage is beautifully light and airy with a high vaulted ceiling and white painted beams. It is stunningly lit with multiple spotlights and table lamps. It is very cosy in the winter with an electric log effect stove and is also fantastic in the summer with double doors opening out onto a small lawned private garden. It has a small patio with table, chairs, umbrella and a built in BBQ for 'al fresco' dining. From a door downstairs is access onto the shared courtyard with additional seating and play area for children.

The main bedroom has a comfortable kingsize bed and the second large bedroom has twin single beds. We can provide a travel cot and high chair and there is a fixed stair gate for those with young children. Both bedrooms have good quality duvets, bed linen and towels, a wardrobe and drawers for clothes. The family bathroom has a combined bath and shower

Nearby Higher Hendham View Farm is a thriving working farm raising beef cattle and the surrounding fields have cattle, sheep and horses to entertain children and adults alike. The farmer is pleased to let our guests see round the main farm and calf pens by prior arrangement.

The Devon region

South Devon is blessed with a mild climate for most of the year, making the region an ideal location for holidays and short breaks at any time.

Higher Hendham Cottages are in the heart of rural South Hams in Devon - close to Kingsbridge, Salcombe, Dartmouth, and Totnes.

The location in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is close to beaches, numerous watersports facilities, beautiful walks along the nearby Avon Valley, the South Coast Path for unbeatable sea views, or a little further afield to the spectacular wilds on Dartmoor.

The area has something for everyone, at any time of year and in any weather. Being in the centre of the South Hams, (just look at the map to prove the point), you are within easy reach of a huge selection of places to visit and explore.

Whether you are after an action packed activity holiday or just a relaxing laid back break from your normal life, there is an enormous choice.

The area is ideal for beaches, surfing, sailing, fishing, boat trips, golf, tennis, riding, cycling and shooting, and a huge selection of beautiful walks, several right from the doorstep.

Nearby are an excellent selection of restaurants, pubs, coffee shops and a huge selection of local shops, craft centres and art galleries.

Our cottages all have a folder and guides giving detailed information of places to go and things to do, and we can give our own suggestions and recommendations if you would like help.

We suggest you also add your favourite places in our Visitors Book to help other guests and to jog your memory when you come back !

We are just 15 minutes drive from Kingsbridge and if you love the ambiance of a traditional English market town, you'll love Kingsbridge. Situated at the top of the Salcombe estuary, it is surrounded by lush, green rolling countryside, making it perennially popular for walking and boating holidays. The town attracts a lot of tourism yet manages to keep a tranquil charm and friendly atmosphere. It has a great selection of local shops including a fishmonger, butchers, bakers, and fresh vegetables as well as two reasonably sized supermarkets - Tescos and Morrissons. In the summer it is decked out with flowers and has won awards from Britain in Bloom for many years.

The town takes its name from an ancient bridge built to link two royal estates – Alvington and Chillington, and by 1219 was a market town. By the 18th Century milling was a major source of revenue for the town, and throughout the 19th Century Kingsbridge had an active coastal shipping trade, with thriving shipbuilding and tanning industries.

Things to do:

From surf shops to vineyards, there's lots to see and do in the Kingsbridge area. The estuary provides plenty of opportunities if you're a water sports enthusiast, while the town has a thriving arts and crafts community for the more laid back visitor. Coast or countryside, Kingsbridge has a choice of scenic walking and hiking routes suitable for every level of ability.

The Kingsbridge Farmers market offers you the chance to sample an amazing range of fresh vegetables, local meats and fresh fish on the first and third Saturdays of every month. For something different, try the Art Café Ceramics Studio, where you can paint your own pottery and then relax with tea and cake in comfortable surroundings – ideal for the whole family to enjoy.

If you really want to chill out completely, visit The Haven Space & Beauty Centre, where highly trained therapists offer a wide range of massages and beauty treatments. One of our family - Emma - also runs yoga classes at the Hen House and if you would like to join one of her beginners or more advanced classes we can arrange this for you.

On rainy days there is a local cinema in Fore Street in Kingsbridge - the Reel Cinema with three screens, and a visit to the Cornworthy Museum is well worthwhile to explore the local history. There is also a Leisure Centre with an indoor swimming pool and gym.

Food and drink:

There is a wide selection of restaurants offering excellent home cooked meals made from the very best of South Devon's quality local produce.

For water sports enthusiasts, stand up paddle boarding is a new and tranquil way to enjoy the water, and combined with bacon butties and tea at the Crabshell Inn, it can even be done in the winter (wetsuits are available to hire). In the summer, this a favourite spot of ours to sit outside at one of the many tables by the quayside and enjoy a drink and excellent food. Some nights they have entertainment with local folk singers and bands.

Other local towns within easy reach include:

Salcombe - This used to be a quaint fishing village popular for holidays back to Victorian times. It is now a well known sailing and boating centre known by the locals as "Chelsea on Sea" due to the prices of its houses. Even if you are not into boating, it is well worth a visit to soak up the atmosphere, see the fantastic views over the estuary, hire a day boat or go out mackerel fishing. There are a huge selection of trendy clothes shops - Jack Wills (started off in Salcombe and is now nationwide), Crew, Quba, Fat Face, White Stuff, Musto, Henri Lloyd are all represented.

Dartmouth - This town is the home of the Royal Naval College and is a popular visitor centre for river cruises, trips on the Dart Valley Steam Railway and plenty of shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. Cultural interest is based on the Flavel Arts Centre with a great selection of films, plays, concerts and special events.

Totnes - Another historical market town at the top of the Dart estuary. A visit to the castle, Friday flea market and numerous arts and crafts shops are all worthwhile. The Dartington Press craft centre is also nearby.

Plymouth - Another historical naval centre, with Plymouth Hoe where Sir Francis Drake is reputed to have played bowls before setting off to fight the Spanish Armada.. The National Marine Aquarium is one of the best in the world with a huge tank with sharks and hundreds of other exotic fish.

It is only a short drive to some of the best beaches in the south west (many of which are 'Blue Flag' beaches), including Bantham, Bigbury, Thurlestone, Milton Sands, Hope Cove, Torcross, North and South Sands (Salcombe), and Blackpool Sands. Whether you after surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding, or just making sand castles and playing on a sandy beach there is a whole choice of fantastic beaches.

Other things to do:

Fantastic views and walks along the South Devon Coast Path.

The spectacular Dartmoor National Park is about 10 miles to the North, is wonderful for all grades of walking, seeing Dartmoor ponies in the rugged wild rolling hills, visiting pubs or even the famous prison at Princetown.

The Eden Project - count on a full day out to visit this famous ecological project in Cornwall about 1.5 hours drive West.

Steam railways - Dart Valley Railway (Kingswear to Paignton) and South Devon Railway (Totnes to Buckfastleigh).

Numerous National Trust and English Heritage properties and gardens.

Sporting activities (other than previously mentioned water sports) :

Golfers are spoilt for choice with excellent courses at Dartmouth, Thurlestone, and Bigbury.

Horse riding at several local stables, or if you enjoy watching horse racing rather than riding there are several local 'point-to-points' in the Spring and racing at Newton Abbott and Exeter racecourses.

Cycling on many designated cycle routes

Tennis courts in Loddiswell, Kingsbridge, Dartmouth and Thurlestone

Clay pigeon shooting.

Family activities:

Woodlands - adventure park with both indoor and outdoor attractions.

Paignton Zoo, wildlife parks, nature reserves.

China Blue Pottery, Totnes - paint your own ceramics.

House of Marbles - amazing marble run displays, glassware, and toyshop.

....or just playing in our own field and shared courtyard with a safe children's play area.

"Great dog friendly barn with really welcoming hosts in a good location."

Lovely barn set in a beautiful location. The accommodation is well equipped and there is plenty to do in the local area. Would definitely stay again.

"cosy cottage in south devon"

We had a wonderful weekend staying in kingfisher cottage at Higher Hendham Cottages. We found the cottage to have all the amenities one could think of, from bags of sugar to freshly laid eggs in the morning. Judy and Mike were lovely hosts and very acocomodating. We found ourselves surrounded by rolling fields complete with llamas and chickens (luckily without a cockrel) making it an idylic spot for a restful weekend. I would highly reccomend these gorgeous cottages for anyone looking to visit south devon.

"very comfortable and homely barn with all mod con's"

Stayed a weekend in Kingfisher Barn - it was very cosy and warm in the depths of winter and felt like home from home. Our hosts could not have done more to make our stay more welcome. Great place if you have kids with lots to do locally and on the homested itself.

"A truly delightful barn and wonderful location"

A really lovely place. The barn was clean, warm and very comfortable. Judy and Mike, the owners, are the perfect hosts - nothing is too much trouble. And a lovely spot, peaceful - but near enough to the sea etc.
