Location description from owner

The England region

Bollington is a small town and civil parish in Cheshire, England, to the east of Prestbury. In the Middle Ages it was part of the Earl of Chester's manor of Macclesfield, and the ancient parish of Prestbury. In 2001, Bollington had a population of 7,095.[1] (7593 in 2011 census)
Bollington, locally nicknamed "Happy Valley",[2] is on the River Dean and the Macclesfield Canal, on the south-western edge of the Peak District. Rising above the town is Kerridge Hill that is surmounted by White Nancy, a monument built to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo in the Napoleonic Wars.

Kerridge

In the 19th and 20th centuries, Bollington was a major centre for cotton spinning. The Waterhouse Mill, now demolished, off Wellington Road, once spun the finest cotton in the world, and was sought after by lace makers in Nottingham and Brussels.[3]

Clarence Mill still stands and has since been converted into luxury apartments. One of the oldest surviving mills in Bollington is the very small Defiance Mill, built in Queen Street about 1800 and also now restored for residential occupation.

There is a large paper coating mill on the site of Lower Mills. The original mill was built by George Antrobus in 1792 but very little of those buildings remain. A stone-built traditional mill still survives amongst the more recent brick developments. In the 1830s and 1840s this mill was rented to Thomas Oliver and Martin Swindells for the production of fine cotton thread for the lace-making industry.

Other remaining mills include Adelphi (Swindells, 1856) and Lowerhouse (Antrobus, 1819, later occupied by Samuel Greg Jnr).

“A lovely cottage in Cheshire”

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this well appointed, cosy and clean cottage. Arrangements went well and we can recommend Jolly Cottage to others.

Owner's reply: John thank you for staying at Bolly Cottage ( and happily called Jolly CottAge if you wish) Always welcome to visit again. Thank you

“A nice little house in a beautiful town”

Reviewed 18 Jan 2016

The house was as described and everything was there to make our stay a very painless process. Little things like the availability of washing up liquid, salt, sugar, shampoo ... really make a difference. The owner Sally was very friendly and helpful all along our stay. The location is beautiful and has easy access to bigger cities. Local pubs and restaurants are very nice. All in all a very good experience. However, it would have been nice to know that a dog lives in the house, even just for allergies purposes, and although the house was very clean and did not smell of dog, we found dog hair in the washing machine and on the couch. Only a minor issue for us but I think worth reporting.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your review. We cannot always guarantee that guests allow dogs into the house if visiting etc but we always maintain a high standard of cleaning including sofas and flooring. My own dog does stay occasionally when it is not let however it is not permitted in the upstairs carpeted areas nor on the white sofa. We did resolve your issue re the washing machine by cleaning the machine on an empty cycle and offering to do this for you. Thank you again Charlotte

“Simply perfect”

Reviewed 15 Sep 2015

After three hours flight delay, we arrived at "Bolly Cottage" when it was dark. We were so relieved to get in and really exhausted but we immediately felt "at home", The kitchen is extremely well equipped, the sofa comortable as are the beds. Everything is tastefully decorated, and you really want for nothing, and if you did, Sally is very helpful. Bollington is a lovely place with stunning views, lovely walks, lots of horses and dogs, which (the dogs) are welcome in the pubs or cafés. People everywhere are very friendly and accommodating. I cannot really think of any negatives. I can warmly recommend staying at the cottage.

Owner's reply: Thank you for looking after my home-I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and you're always welcome back

“Lovely cottage, had everything one could wish for.”

So comfortable to come home to after a busy day working in the area. Clean, well equipped, convenient and owner a joy to deal with.

Owner's reply: I loved your humorous texts! Hope to maybe finally meet you next year on your business trip to the area. Thank you for taking care of my home.
