Very Good

The stone house was a lovely villa, clean and tidy. The pool was a good size for our family of 4. The road leading up to the villa was very steep and bumpy but once at the villa the views were worth it. A lovely welcome platter was left for us with a few bits to get us through the first day. The WiFi was a bit on and off but it turns out you need the upstairs blinds open to get the signal, once we figured that out it was fine.lovely local beaches are worth a visit and the snorkelling was amazing. I would recommend this villa to anyone looking for a very peaceful holiday away from all tourist spots. Lovely owners who we saw a few times as he checked the pool etc, they also made great cookies for our kids one day.

Owner's reply: Thanks , pleased you enjoyed the holiday.

“Restful holiday”

Reviewed 10 Jul 2016

We had a very relaxing 10 days at The Stone House. The villa was superb for myself, husband and 17 yr old daughter.(Thank heavens the wifi worked!) Shutters, fly screens and A.C a god send, although no a.c upstairs so that room did get a little warm! A fly screen on bath room window would be useful. Well equipped kitchen with welcome pack which was very much appreciated. I loved the very generous supply of bath and beach towels to help ourselves to and also the spare bed linen. Kastri is quaint with lovely tavernas and very friendly people. Many beaches around, some needed some walking or dirt track driving to get to, but well worth the effort. All very quiet in June.

Owner's reply: Thanks for points raised. Guess who's forgotten to put new fly screen back on. Glad you enjoyed the stay.

“Peaceful Retreat”

Reviewed 13 Jul 2015

This property is situated in a part of “real” Crete. If you are looking for partying and tourism this is certainly not the place to choose. However, if you are looking for something different away from the crowds in a very relaxing part of the island this is for you. The Stonehouse is very quaint and is built on a hillside plot overlooking the bay of Kastri and Keratokampos. It is completely private with its own swimming pool. It has a spacious kitchen/ living/dining space, one separate bedroom and a further bedroom on a mezzanine level above the living area. It sleeps four persons comfortably. There is a shower room with toilet and washbasin. To the front of the house is a large patio area with dining table for six. The house is kitted out with pretty much everything needed for a self catering holiday (cooker, fridge, microwave, washing machine, iron, ironing board, air conditioning etc.). There is a separate utility room. The house is about one kilometre from the village of Kastri and a car is really essential. The road to the house is up a dirt track. This should not put you off, however. We managed quite well in a Nissan Micra, but be prepared for a slow climb up the track. There is private parking next to the house. Kastri is about a thirty minute walk away, but it is a walk rather than a stroll and a torch is essential during the hours of darkness as the track is unlit. There are several restaurants in Kastri and Keratokampus serving competitively priced good quality meals. We found it was almost as cheap to eat out as in. The ones we visited were very friendly and many of the staff speak some English. There are two supermarkets nearby which supply essentials. They don’t offer a large selection and so if you want specific brands or more unusual produce you would be wise to visit one of the bigger towns/villages for your shopping. The area is full of natural beauty. The sea is clear and blue offering safe bathing and there is an abundance of walks of varying lengths throughout the area. Travel time from Heraklion airport is around ninety minutes. The road is good and fairly direct. The owners of the property were keen to ensure that our stay was a happy one.

“Nice, quiet villa”

Reviewed 8 Jul 2015

A lovely location, with wonderful views of the see. Close to the local town, if you have a car...probably 30 minute walk down to the town, more on the way back as you will be walking up hill. The villa is well equip, although I did think a little small in reality for 2 couples. One bathroom is really not enough, and a larger fridge in definitely needed, as there was nowhere near enough room to store food and drink for 4 to keep everything cool, especially if you are inclined to use the bbq and cook in house. You are slightly overlooked by the higher villa. But not enough to really worry you unless both are occupied for the duration of your holiday Internet access was not existent....and you do pay £20 for it. But these are only small incidentals. The holiday was great, the local Cretans are so very friendly and welcoming. If you want peace and quiet it is the place to be

Owner's reply: Faulty router found to be cause of no Internet. Now replaced.

“Relaxing, comfortable villa”

Reviewed 2 Oct 2013

The Stonehouse is an extremely comfortable, quiet and relaxing villa. is situated in a quiet, friendly, picturesque area of Crete. The villa is excellently equipped and very clean. We had a welcome pack of olive oil, wine and other items which was a nice touch. It is restful and safe. The pool and the outside areas are also perfect for a quiet get-away-from-it-all break. The villa is up a dirt track and just outside the village of Kristi where there are good tavernas. You can also easily eat at the villa. There are tables inside and out and the views are stunning. Around the village and along the southern coast there are some amazing beaches. People, weather, food, scenery all great. There does not seem to be any mosquitoes at the villa, a real bonus - (do bring mosquito tablets just in case). We had a fabulous time here. The villa allowed us both to unwind, it was a perfect holiday. The hospitality of the locals is also great. What more can I say? - oh yes, we did not want to leave!

“Unspoilt by tourism”

Reviewed 13 Sep 2013

Our first booking with holidaylettings was done with trepidation, but the experience has been 100% positive. The reservation, payment, arrival and return of deposit were all done seamlessly. We took a chance on visiting the South side of Crete, having never visited the Island before. We were not disappointed - the drive to the villa from Heraklion was enjoyable and trouble-free. Driving over the mountains was hair-raising, but provided fantastic views. Arrival at the Stonehouse went smoothly and we immediately settled into the relaxed surroundings. It took a 5 minute drive into the village to get the food for a few days, and then back to the Villa to relax and take in the surroundings. The view is great, The Villa was ideal for 2 adults and 2 kids, the pool is just the right size, with a chance to sunbathe by the pool or out on the front looking out to sea. I found late evenings with a glass of local wine particularly pleasant gazing at the constellations, the milky way, and spotting shooting stars. The nearest beaches are 5 minutes away, slightly pebbly, but with a crystal clear unpolluted sea. We explored along the coast and found within a 5 minute drive at least 2 places to park up and carefully walk down to the less accessible beaches. More sandy & shaded, with rocky outcrops to go snorkelling around and jumping off. This became a regular activity for us. On one day we were the only people on the beach. Although we prepared our own evening meals on a few occasions, we realised that it cost no more if we went down to Keratokampos (to the far end of the Village) and literally sat ON the sea-front in a traditional Greek taverna with all the locals. I am guessing this experience is a million miles away from the big resorts on the North of the Island, and we were thankful for that. The owners are very easy to contact and deal with. The Villa is perfect, and a true reflection of the website info. Even the goats on the nearby hill came to say hello now and again to add a bit of fun for the kids. This is a place we would definitely come back to soon.

“Beautifull villa & stunning view !”

Reviewed 29 Jul 2013

The owner Mark was very helpfull from the start, with prompt communication and information on the area. Just so happens he was holidaying near there at the time, and picked us up from the airport with car hire pre arranged. It took about an hour & half to get there due to the winding mountain roads but the scenary on the way was amazing. The dirt track to the villa was a little worrying but as long as you have your wits about you its fine, but very stony to walk on. Car hire is essential as there are no lights on the way so you cannot walk up there of a night time. We had a surprise welcome pack of fruit , wine, butter, jam & water. Everything is there iron/ironing board, hairdryer, travel cot lots of spare bedding & towels. The washing machine was easy to use, just put on to number 30 then click on start. There was washing powder there to use although i took my own liquid just in case. The pool was lovely & refreshing and normally about 26 degrees so doesn't need to be heated. It was quite windy a lot which was needed due to the heat ! The 360 degree views are stunning, especially sitting out the front with the sea & mountain view. The villaa was fully equipped with cutlery plates frying pans etc & corkscrew ! In the drawer by the main bedroom there is a couple of mosquito plugs so just take your own tablets although we didnt have a problem with mosquito's at all. Air conditioning was usefull and instant which was much needed after sunbathing ! The maid come in on a Saturday to change the bedding. There is some condiments in the cupboards so check before you buy. I would recommend you buy some bleach to put down the drain in the bathroom every so often.I took lots of carrier bags with me which was usefull to change the bins as required, and at the bottom of the dirt track you can dispose of your rubbish there. There is 2 supermarkets in the village the bigger one was better opposite the marina. Water was very cheap about 30p a bottle. Cigarettes about £3 a packet. You can get most things there and also bats/balls snorkelling items kids toys wine and cold meats & feta cheese /taromosolata which is cheap to buy. There are about 7/8 taverna's there i would say the best are Jimmy's , also the first one on the left as you enter the village (house wine £2 a bottle and the most traditional, set back opposite the bar where the orange chairs are , try the prawn sakanaki, if you know your Greek food ! This is a very quiet village without watersports or buzzing nightlife but really relaxing and a peacefull getaway to totally relax. Most of the beaches are stony except for the small part where the marina is where its completely sandy & safe to swim & the cove, which is found at the bottom of the dirt track on the right there is a church go round the back to get there but it is very steep. The nearest town is about an hours drive so take water with you, there you will find a few bars , taverna's cafe's and some good clothes shops. A map is essential. Every one was very friendly and nothing too much trouble. At the bottom of the dirt track if you drive left and drive for about 15 mins takes you to another small villaga with another big supermarket and a few taverna's. With regards to the airport there are some great shops selling items you wont see in the shops so save some euro's, they sell plates calenders t shirts etc great for traditional Greek presents. Cigarettes were about £30 for 200 the limit is 800 per person & wine 20 litres ! When you go through to security there is a place selling 5 star Metaxa ( Greek brandy for 21 euros double the cost in England for a 1 litre bottle. The villa was spotless and everything there you will need for a great holiday, Mark was brilliant from start to finish answering all our questions and ensuring we had a good holiday....brilliant service all round !

I am writing this review at the request of the owner, I assume they have just joined the trip advisor site, before i start, this holiday was several years aqgo so some things may well have changes, so all comments are based on time of travel ,and are therefore not recent. !st, i remember well, that Mark Bulloock is english, and all the arrangments we made where dealt with with great ease, and no question was to much trouble to answer, the directions were fantastic, and bearing in mind we had a night flight, we only went wrong once!!!, the track to the accommodation is a little intresting, a dirt track with a few intresting bends, but you soon get used to it, and once there the views are to die for, as said this was some time ago, so things may have changed, i would recommend a 4x4, and again this was arranged with mark. The accomodation is great, every thing you need for a comfortable stay, including air conditioning and a great pool (there was some work going on at the rear of the property, so can not comment on this, as i assume it will have been completed by now, a nice size swimming pool and well maintained by some friends of theres that live a few kilometers up the road, and are available if you have any problems, the location is great for exploreing the area, which is of the normal tourist areas, the local village has everything you need, and i would recommend the taverna, nearest to the square, the owner is a white look alike bob marley, and great fun (if he is still there), all in all we had a very pleasant stay here, and would highly recommend it for a get away from it holiday, but with local amineties. Again I must stress this was a few years ago so some things may well have changed, but I am sure that Mark would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have, he was very good to us, and I must stress we do not know them from a social point of view, only from booking this little gem of a house

Will be returning for another visit as soon as possible. Great place we fully recommend it.
