Location description from owner

The Heraklion Prefecture region

This quiet little village of Keratokampos/Kastri situated next to the sea, is a small resort that has long been enjoyed by the locals with "weekenders" coming from Heraklion and Atheians descending in high season. The last few years have now also attracted visitors from the European market who have slowly begun to discover and enjoy the tranquillity and real village atmosphere of this village.

You find Keratokampos at the end of a long road that winds down from Ano Viannos, the largest village in the area and only 15 mins away, through picturesque scenery of pretty hillside villages and olive groves. Life in Keratokampos/Kastri centres along the main street which lines the sand and shingle beach. There are tavernas and cafés ensuring you dont need to go to far to experience real Cretan cooking at its best.

Keratokampos

We not only bring you an affordable experience, we also bring you a high quality product and you can discover the 'real' Crete. Our passion for this unique island has led us to this area and properties in this small pretty resort with the splendid views and laid back lifestyle.

All over the Island are villages reflecting on the ancient way of life, people that are as warm and hospitable as the climate and a cuisine thats tasty and fresh.

This area makes a great base for exploring the south and its hinterland villages. Take walks along the coast, swim in the clear water, discover the sandy coves and other coastal villages nearby, sit in the shade of the Tamarisk trees, enjoy a drink playing backgammon with the locals or just relax gazing across the blue ocean horizon.

Amazingly you will discover the hours just fly by doing just that!

“everything was just as we expected, we had a fabulous holiday.”

Reviewed 6 Oct 2016

We had such a good holiday we are planning to go back next year ! . The villa is just as it is in the photos. It was clean, light and airy, with lots of extra towels and extra bedding. The welcome pack on arrival was just that, 'welcoming'. The first time we drove up the hill we wondered if our hire car would make it, but we quickly got used to the bends and steepness. Worth it when you have those amazing views. Taking a shower with a panoramic view of the sea is what holidays are all about. We ate most nights at Taverna Kriti. Right next to the sea and the food was fantastic, forget the menu just let Yorgo recommend whatever is fresh that day you will not be disappointed.

“Lovely location in authentic Crete”

Reviewed 17 Oct 2014

This is a nice house, very spacious and comfortable, with all mod cons. The pool is small but perfectly adequate, and the pool and terrace furniture is very comfortable. The outside area is very private with a good solid barbecue in a sheltered area. The kitchen is extremely well equipped for a rental property, with an excellent set of knives, and there are plenty of dishes and cutlery. No wine glasses, but that is a Greek thing. The internet connection was excellent, and steady (trying to get used to the home offering again!). The road to the house is a bit challenging, but do-able, even in a normal car, and the other roads are very good and well surfaced. The little village is lovely and people are very friendly - there's absolutely no mass tourism here, although there are quite a few tavernas. Eating out is incredibly cheap and very good. The house is well placed for trips to Knossos, Iraklion, Aghios Nikolaos and Ierapetra (which is probably the nearest place for large supermarkets). If you like swimming in the sea but are not fond of stony beaches, there is a tiny sandy beach just to the left of the harbour, which we used all the time. The sea was warm(ish) even in October. If you fly in to Chania airport, take the main road to Iraklion and then follow the owner's directions - we took what appears on the map to be the shorter route down from Chania and it added about an hour to the journey.

“Top Quality Property”

Reviewed 7 Aug 2014

We have stayed in various Greek accommodation since our honeymoon 26 years ago and can honestly say this was the best equipped villa we have experienced. If like us you like to cook on holiday this had every utensil, pot and gadget needed. We even asked if they could provide a BBQ and a very fine brick built one was put in and we christened it. The villa had fantastic views of a really nice, unpopulated and quiet coastline in Southern Crete. We tried most of the handful of local tavernas and they were fine with the usual greek cuisine. This part of the island is not used to mass tourism which is why we chose it, the staff just treat you as ordinary folk and don't make a big fuss so things are pretty laid back. Pretty good value for money though. The privacy of the villa is great although there are a few more around and about. There is a more than adequate pool, not just a plunge bath and enough chairs and beds to sit or lie on. The main bedroom is roomy with air con and our daughter visited us and used the downstairs basement bedroom which had three single beds and was airy and not too hot. The bathrooms were massive and well equipped. All fixtures and fittings were of a very good standard. I hate to admit that whilst I wanted to be in the middle of nowhere I did sign up for Internet access and this was better than at home. If I am really picky the doors out on to the patio didn't quite work as they had to be closed from the inside which in the evening when we were trying to stop mossy's getting in became a bit of a problem but that's more of a personal thing. As long as you can cope with a drive up a rough track to get to the place I cannot fault our experience. Any questions or problems were dealt with by the owners and we had a lovely time in a tremendous quality property.

“The perfect place for rest and relaxation”

Reviewed 17 Oct 2013

The villa is in a perfect setting , high enough to get great views of the sea but not in the middle of nowhere. The facilities are excellent; the very private pool and patio area allow you to totally relax and unwind. The local area has maintained a very traditional style; when we were there we had the beach virtually to ourselves and the sea was the cleanest and warmest I have know in any European country. There are some local taverna's that serve exceptionally fresh and well cooked food. Everyone is very welcoming and hospitable. A car is really essential to get down to the village and back.

“Away from it all”

Reviewed 3 Oct 2013

If you want a holiday in unspoilt Crete then this is the area to be. The villa is up a rough track for which a 4 wd car would be ideal but an ordinary saloon can do it with care. There are 25 villas up this track winding all the way up the valley so the road surface gets churned up. Keratakampos is a very small village with limited facilities and tourism is certainly not in evidence(thank goodness) food prices are sensible but don't expect Haute cuisine. The villa is well set up for a couple and the pool is a great bonus on hot days. There is another villa, owned by the same couple immediately below Terracotta with an interconnecting gate if 2 couples want to be nearby

“A real get away from it all in authentic Cretan village”

Reviewed 17 Sep 2013

This is a lovely villa in a quiet location, The rooms are airy and well proportioned and the pool is secluded and well maintained. The owners are very helpful and great to deal with, as are their friends Keith & Eva who are 'on location' in case help is needed. The drive to the villa from the airport is just over an hour, the driving instructions provided in the helpful pack are great and we found the villa in the dark by following these. The road leading up to the villa is more of a stony track, but persevere its worth the effort! The village itself is very sweet with just 4 tavernas, we tried three and all served really good food. The slightly bigger village of Tsoutsouros has a few more tavernas all serving pretty good food too. It's worth exploring the beaches along the South coast, we travelled along as far as Tertsa and the little villages and beaches were superb. We were very happy staying at the lovely pool at the villa though as it was very hot during our stay. For families or for those looking to cook at the very well equipped villa, the local supermarket is a bit limited there are however large supermarkets in Lerapetra which is about an hour's drive. Overall we had a fantastic holiday and would certainly recommend the villa and South Crete which is a complete contrast to the commercial North of Crete.

“Peacefull house in authentic Crete”

Reviewed 26 Aug 2013

My wife and myself rented Terracotta for quiet holidays and stayed 2 weeks. Booking : Mark and Mandy were very helpfull and nice and very reactive in the email exchanges and fully available to answer our numerous questions. The house : Waked up by goats' bells sound on the hill, enjoying a nice greek yogurt & honey on the terrasse with sunshine & sea view, quick dive in the pool and sunbathing and sipping a cup of tea under the pergola, and enjoying a glass of wine while watching the stars (no "city lights" pollution)... This place is amazing for relaxing. The kitchen is modern and very well furnished, the living room nice for laying in the couch and read a book while looking at the sea. Master bedroom is very cosy with its own nice bathtub and you get a very nice sea view. The location : Perfect for farniente and to get away from touristic areas. You reach the village or nice creeks in less than 2 minutes by car. Local tavernas serve simple and yummy greek cuisine. We would definitively recommend terracotta villa for the house itself and the kindness of the owners, thanks again!

“A real get away from it all holiday”

Reviewed 14 Jun 2013

We wanted a rest and real peace and quiet which this place has plenty of. not the full season when we went but I imagine its not much different . Great property with everything well equipped . We also found it a great base as its central to the island and makes trips out both east and west and north a good start and finish place. Lovely local resturants and local people were very genuine.
