The Ionian Islands region
Lygia, the location of the house
Lygia (also known as Ligia) is a charming fishing village situated on the East coast of Lefkas (Lefkada), only about five kilometres south of Lefkas Town. Life here is slow and stress-free. The centre point of the village is it's little harbour where much of the Island's fresh fish arrives every day.
Lygia (Ligia) village consists of one main street with a few tavernas, cafes and bars. A couple of minimarkets, a bakery and two petrol stations add to the selection of places in which to spend your money.
This is a very relaxing place to stay. The food is good - you can sit for hours at one of the harbour front tavernas eating a plate of Gavros (small fried fish) with a Greek salad and a basket of fresh crusty Greek bread with a glas of local wine, enjoying the breeze off the sea, watching the fishing boats leaving and enjoy the views across to the Castle of Saint George on the mainland.
If you like to go for a walk on the seaside, you can start at the port of Lygia. The path stretches out for about 5 km from the harbor along beaches, taverns and hotels, and leads you to the former Saltworks in Kariotes where you can watch the seabirds, walking over narrow embankments, in the midst of the sea.
Information on Lefkas Island
Lefkas (Lefkada) welcomes you in the small capital city by the sea or in the countless small and large villages that are scattered in the beautiful countryside between sea, mountains and forests. Some of the villages are vivid and touristic, others have to be virtually discovered.
Within a radius of about 9 km from the island you have the Lefkadian archipelago with the islands Skorpios (former Onassis family), Meganissi, Kalamos, Kastos and some more smaller islands. Among yachtsmen the area is an insider tip and well known for comfortable sailing from island to island and good but not too rough winds.
Lefkada is an island that is rather new on the tourists scene and is specially famous for its marvelous beaches. The unique landscape, turquoise waters, olive and cypress forests, dramatic cliffs and small ports, enchant every visitor. The famous sandy beaches Porto Katsiki and Engremni with their deep blue, crystal clear waters are constantly among the best beaches of the Mediterranean. In 2012 "Porto Katsiki" was chosen as the best beach in Greece.
Do you remember the slogan of an advertising campaign for Greece, which ran several years ago: "Greece, chosen by the Gods"? This advertisement showed a beautiful bay called "Agios Nikitas," located on Lefkas island.
At this point, I also like to emphasize that Lefkas is perhaps in reality the famous "Ithaca." If you just follow the descriptions of Homer's Odyssey and the persevering researches of the archaeologist William Dorpfeld (he has explored the island from 1900 until his death in 1940), you may agree that the locations on Lefkas might resemble the real Ithaca.
