The Phuket region

Phuket is the biggest island in Thailand, located in the Andaman Sea of southern Thailand. The island is mostly mountainous with a mountain range in the west of the island from the north to the south. It is estimated that Phuket has a total area of approximately 570 square kilometres (220 sq mi) (including the province's other islands). Phuket is approximately 536 miles (863 km) south of Bangkok, and covers an area of approximately 543 square kilometres (210 sq mi) excluding small islets. It is estimated that if all its 39 other small islands are included, Phuket Province will cover an area of approximately 590 square kilometres (230 sq mi). The island total length, from north to south, is estimated at 30 miles (48 km) and 13 miles (21 km) wide. Cimate: 25ºc to 35ºc all year.

Kata Beach

KATA BEACH

Kata Beach's 1.5km (1 mile) strip of golden sand is one of the most popular beaches in Phuket due to its combination of beauty, facilities and activities. Hundreds of people come each day to soak up the sun and swim. Often busy but never crowded, this beach is perfect in many ways.

During the north-east monsoon season (November to April) the warm sea is often as flat as a pancake, crystal clear and turquoise in colour.

The south-west monsoon season (May to October) can make for rougher swimming conditions, but it's this time of year that the surfers flock to enjoy the waves. On the days red warning flags are flying you should not enter the water due to dangerous rip tides and swells but on these days you probably wouldn't want to go the beach anyway.

Late in the year as the waters turn calm, Kata Bay fills up with beautiful yachts which arrive from all over the region to compete in December's King's Cup Regatta, Asia's premier sailing event.

ATTRACTIONS

It is hard to separate Kata from its picture perfect white sandy beach. But there is a lot more to the place, what with colourful bars, countless restaurants and good shopping.

Another good option for a couple of hours is the viewpoint up on the hill between Kata and Rawai and then you can always visit Kata’s Buddhist Temple on Patak Road while the kids’ favourite place has to be Dino Park, right next to Marina Phuket Resort.

RESTAURANTS

While nowhere on the scale of Patong, Kata is still a major destination for holidaymakers, particularly those of North European extraction. The long white stretch of sand that is Kata Beach has attracted more than its share of visitors over the years and hotels, resorts and restaurants have sprung up to serve their needs.

You'll find cuisine from all over the world represented here and options run the gamut from mid-range Thai seafood outlets to some of the finest dining anywhere on the island. Steak and seafood seem to be the most common offerings of Kata's many restaurants.

Most roadside restaurants display their iced selection of lobsters, tiger prawns and plump fish right in front of their shop for all to see - and for diners to handpick. There's no shortage of Thai restaurants, with Scandinavian, Tex-Mex, Indian and Italian places to choose from, just to name a few.
There are so many restaurants in the general Kata Beach area that we have drawn a line between northern and southern Kata and displayed the restaurants on two separate pages.

SOUTHERN KATA BEACH RESTAURANTS

This area is known for its outstanding fine dining. Award-winning restaurants such as The Boathouse Wine & Grill and Mom Tri’s Royal Kitchen are real ‘splurge affairs’ with prices nearing European rates but set in such regal splendour that the dining experience in them is unforgettable.

NIGHTLIFE

Less hectic than Patong, more compact than Karon, Kata is the ideal compromise between the two. Most evening venues here are geared towards families and couples with outdoor cafés and restaurants. Happily, Kata's small roads have contained fast and furious development and helped retain the village-like atmosphere.

The actual beachfront is dominated by the Club Med and because of this most nightlife is clustered along the back road (Kata Road) running parallel to the beach. There, you’ll find noisy and wild girlie bars galore while, generally speaking, the rest of Kata is family friendly. For the real hedonistic party scene, head to Patong, just a 10-minute drive north.

SHOPPING

Kata Beach lies south of Patong on Phuket's west coast. The shopping area stands back from the beach. Kata offers quite a varied selection of shopping opportunities for visitors and, although somewhat sleepy during the day (everyone's on the beach), many souvenir shops open in the early afternoon and shop owners are there to barter with until late at night.

Kata Beach can be divided up into three sections, south, central and north. Further south from Kata itself stands the beautiful white-sand beach of Kata Noi. The Katathani Phuket Beach Resort dominates the beach and the dead-end street. On the street side, opposite the resort stands a smattering of tailors, an optician and several convenience stores.
