Location description from owner

The Turkish Mediterranean Coast region

Ancient Olympos

Midway between Antalya and Kas, is the ancient site of Olympos and the Chimera ("The Chimera, a cluster of spontaneous flames that blaze from crevices on the rocky slopes of Mount Oympos, is the stuffof legend" Lonely Planet guide to Turkey). Near the ruined city there's s four kilometre beach and the Olympos lodge makes an ideal stopover if you want to take the Antalya-Kas trip at a leisurely pace.
Kalkan
Towards Elmali, Kalkan is 29kms west of Kas on the Kas-Fethiye Road. It boasts a wine house with over 50 different wines on the menu and numerous restaurants and cafes. Kalkan is pricier overall and has really been taken over by tourism. Consider a quick trip here and then head towards Elmali in the hills. To get there from Kalkan, head towards Fethiye and take the turn-off to Elmali (just outside of Kalkan). The road climbs and you will enjoy stunning sea views. You will then reach the gorge above Kaputas beach. There are a couple of places to take a break and enjoy the surroundings. You can also venture further on to explore the countryside towards Elmali.
Saklikent Gorge
The natural wonder of Saklikent ("Hidden City"), an 18 kilometre gorge cut into the Akdaglar mountains, makes a lovely spot to escape the summer heat and experience the region's natural beauty. The gorge is 60 kilometres to the west of Kas. Between Kas and Saklikent, an abundance of fragrant evergreen valleys and secluded villages provide endless scope for exploration. Enjoy some fresh trout whilst sitting on the water's edge.
Tlos

Close to Saklikent, Tlos used to be one of the oldest and most important cities in ancient Lycia. It has a dramatic setting in the mountains and the crusader fortress and well preserved theatre offer fine views. There are a number of shady restaurants with natural small waterfalls serving delicious fish.
Tlos tends to be less popular than Sak]ikent with tourists and is all the more appealing because of it. Tlos is sign posted on the Kas-Fethiye Road and is approximately 70kms from Kas.
Yenikoy

For stunning views of Kas and the surrounding islands, head out of town on the Antalya Road to Agulu (about 10 km). There is a small sign indicating a turn-off on your left for Yenikoy ("new town") amongst other places - just a 19 km drive up the Taurus Mountains.
Xanthos and Letoon
Once the capital of Lycia, the ruined city of Xanthos has a Roman theatre and rock tombs and is definitely worth a visit. It is about 50km from Kas. Perhaps more impressive, are the ruins at Letoon. You can visit both sites easily as well as an hour or two at Patara or Kaputas Beach on your way back in less than a day.
Swimming and beaches
The surrounding coast is rocky rather than beach-lined and is perfect for diving and swimming. Many local hotels on the Peninsula have platforms which visitors can use for the price of an orange juice. Southeast of the town centre (about a 10 minute drive) you'll find the delightful and quieter Big Pebble Beach. This is a beautiful swimming spot but you will need swimming shoes. There are cafes here serving snacks and drinks. Closer to the centre is Cinalar Beach – “Small Pebble Beach” - popular with locals and tourists alike. Waiters serve you fresh orange juice and beer whilst the café has a buzzing atmosphere and plays some great music. Lunch is good here too.
Closer to the villa, the public beach towards the town centre (about 3km) is a nice spot to take a dip in the sea. There are also many swimming spots on the Kas-Fethiye Road towards Kalkan.
Our favourites: The peaceful haven of Limanagzi is made up of 4 beach "clubs" and can only be reached by boat from Kas harbour where a service operates regularly (12 lira return, 5 lira for children) - it is an absolutely lovely spot for swimming and relaxing away from the crowds. Opt for Bilal's Beach where there's a free kayak the kids will enjoy. The dramatic sandy beach of Kaputas, reached by a descent of 192, steps, is only 19 kilometres away to the west on the Kas-Fethiye Road and is without a doubt, one of the most beautiful swimming beaches in the region.
Further afield, 41 kilometres to the west of Kas, lies the 18 kilometre World Heritage Patara Beach, Turkey's biggest, which is a]so the feeding ground of Caretta-Caretta sea turtles. The area around Patara also abounds in ruins.

Kas

EXPLORING KAS
Kas is a delightful seaside town that has managed to preserve its unique charm and character despite its increasing popularity with tourists and travellers. Its stunning location on the island-studded Turkish Mediterranean coast with rugged mountains rising up from the shoreline is the stuff of dreams. The bustling harbour, where each morning fishermen sell fresh- caught seafood, and from which you can take excursions to the many surrounding islands, is lined with traditional tea gardens. Right next to the harbour the main Town Square provides a focal point where locals and tourists blend seamlessly. Fanning out from here, narrow jasmine-scented, alleys overlooked by traditional Ottoman balconies and packed with restaurants, bars, cafes and shops, await exploration.
Kas is 185 kilometres south west of Antalya and 160 kilometres south east of Dalaman. It enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot summers (average May- Sep 90-28 C) and mild winters. The population of 8,0OO inhabitants swells considerably during the holiday season. The 5OO-meter Yatan Adam other civilisations. The amphitheatre - the only Anatolian amphitheatre facing the sea - dating from the first century BC is amazingly well preserved and seats up to 4,0OO. It lies 5oo meters to the west of the Town Square. Other significant remains are the sarcophagi strewn around the city, and the 4th century BC rock tombs which line the surrounding mountains and are illuminated at night.
