Description

The quaint hamlet of Kambia has magnificent uninterrupted views of Souda Bay, olive and pine covered hills and valleys, and the White Mountains which are snow capped for 6 months of the year. The Sunset Villas, Villa Sarah and Villa Eleni, are located at the highest point in Kambia with one of the most enviable vantage points on Crete. Nestled on a terrace cut into the mountainside, the land drops away below the villas which allows for an exceptional setting for the entire property. The last 250m of the access road is winding and quite steep in places but the dramatic views and glorious sunsets make it more than worthwhile.

On the long, hot summer days that Crete is famous for the pool terrace at Villa Sarah often enjoys a much needed cooling breeze thanks to its elevated position, and it has been furnished with turquoise sun-beds and umbrellas, poolside drinks tables, and a barbeque. Adjacent to the pool terrace is the dining area which is equipped with a wrought iron and mosaic

On the long, hot summer days that Crete is famous for the pool terrace at Villa Sarah often enjoys a much needed cooling breeze thanks to its elevated position, and it has been furnished with turquoise sun-beds and umbrellas, poolside drinks tables, and a barbeque. Adjacent to the pool terrace is the dining area which is equipped with a wrought iron and mosaic tiled dining table and matching cushioned chairs. Shaded by a cypress wood pergola, this is the perfect place for al-fresco dining whilst looking out over the sparkling blue bay during the day or the twinkling lights from the coastline below at night. An exterior staircase leads to a fully tiled roof terrace which is completely private and is the ideal spot for sheltered sun-bathing. In keeping with the gorgeous location, apart from a number of flower beds and clay pots planted with bougainvillea, yukka palms, chrysanthemums, bottlebrush plants, hottentot fig, cyclamen, margarita daisies, lemon and nectarine trees, the land surrounding the villas has been left in its natural state with rocky outcrops interspersed with almond trees, olive trees, and an infusion of wild flowers in the spring.

Further details outdoors

The Sunset Villas have been carefully furnished and equipped to a high specification as quality second homes for their English owners, and are therefore not a typical “holiday let”. The quality and comfort will appeal to the escapists amongst you who are looking for a rural retreat with panoramic views, yet only 6 minutes by car to an excellent selection of tavernas, shops and sandy beaches. The detached, split-level villas are separated by a 15 metre private and gated driveway. Their close proximity lends itself beautifully to larger parties, but equally when required, the thoughtful design and positioning ensures maximum privacy when sunbathing and swimming because each villa has its own sea facing terrace and infinity pool set on opposing sides of the property.

Location description from manager

The Chania Prefecture region

Crete has everything you that could possibly want from a holiday: soaring mountains that are snow capped from November to June, many great walking trails including Europe's deepest gorge, ancient archaeological sites and Minoan palaces, quaint villages, sparkling clear blue seas with tavernas serving freshly caught fish, golden beaches, glorious wild flowers in the Spring, and a variety of delicious foods which are all made from healthy home grown produce.

As incredible as the island is, it is the Cretan people who will make your holiday truly memorable. Descendants of the Minoan's, one of Europe's earliest civilizations, and shaped by centuries of struggle against oppression, the Cretans are as rugged as the mountains, fiercely independent but passionately friendly.
Villa Sarah is located in the heart of The Apokoronas Region just east of the beautiful town of Chania. With its stunning Venetian harbour, quayside bars and restaurants, what better place to relax and watch the world go by. In the narrow streets behind Chania's harbour you will find tavernas, bars, the famous covered market, and many local shops selling handicrafts, textiles, jewellery and hand made ceramics. Visit 'Leather Lane' for outstanding hand made leather bargains.

The climate of Crete is a temperate Mediterranean climate and the weather is characterized by long hot, dry summers and mild winters. The Spring can be warm and sunny during the day but still have cooler evenings and is perfect for walking, birdwatching and looking at the wild flowers. All in all Crete is absolutely perfect for your Villa holiday.

Kambia

The organic taverna at the famous glass blowing workshop in Kokkino Horio is only 2.1km from The Sunset Villas and has sea and mountain views. During the day you can watch recycled glass being blown in the traditional manner into amazingly beautiful products including lampshades, ornaments, decanters, plates and bowls. 100m further into Kokkino Horio is the family-run taverna on the main square that is shaded by weeping willow trees, has delicious food, and very friendly owners (Zacharias and his son Yiannis) who know everything about the village and the surrounding area. During the summer months there are occasional live Cretan music nights at the taverna, which are a lot of fun. Kokkino Horio (“red village” in Greek) was the main village set for the film “Zorba the Greek”. There are little whitewashed houses and narrow streets that wind around the village centre. There is a third taverna on the outskirts of the village that has lovely views.

Plaka Square is just 2.6km away and has 6 tavernas, 2 well stocked mini markets, an Italian restaurant, a hair dresser, and 7 cafes. 8 minutes away by car is the lovely village of Almyrida which is built around a crescent shaped sandy beach. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 7 excellent tavernas, 10 café/bars, 2 bakeries, a wonderful jewellery shop, 5 mini-markets, 3 gift shops,a pharmacy, an organic fruit and vegetable shop with a deli counter, a butcher's shop, and an off-license. Also in Almyrida there is a scuba diving office, a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans, and Villas Crete Holidays for tourist information, boat trips, horse riding, guided walking tours, and guided coach excursions.

A few minutes by car from the villa, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, lace makers in Gavalohori, and silk makers in Kalamitsi. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 45 minutes away by car.

Cooking classes and wine tasting set at a local winery can be taken by those of you who are interested. Guided walks led by experts in mountaineering and/or flora and fauna can also be arranged. For those of you who prefer to venture out on your own, a copy of the guide book "Crete on the Road" by Frankie Miles comes with every villa. The book contains detailed directions to many well known and hidden sites, opening times and prices for all attractions, taverna recommendations, and the only existing map of the National Highway showing the exits and entrances.
