Description

THE HOUSE

Pithari, a wonderful, traditional stone house built in 1946, is in the small picturesque village of Skalohori and nestled on a slope on the north-west side of Lesvos, within easy reach of some of the major tourist spots and best beaches of this beautiful island.

The completely renovated two-storey semi-detached house can comfortably accommodate 5 people (max.7) and lends itself to year-round holidays. There are three bedrooms, two double and one single. Upstairs (entry from the front door at ground level) a hallway leads to the light-filled master bedroom and bathroom and then to the living room and a compact but fully-equipped kitchen. The small fireplace and exposed stone is the focal point of the cosy combined dining and lounge room. The French doors lead out to a wonderful stone-paved terrace of 25 square metres. You may, in fact, spend most of your time here as there is an outdoor setting with umbrella and daybed.

A wooden and iron staircase leads downstairs

You may, in fact, spend most of your time here as there is an outdoor setting with umbrella and daybed.

A wooden and iron staircase leads downstairs (entry is also possible from the lock-up garage) to a very spacious twin bedroom, a further single bedroom, and a full bathroom. All bedrooms have built-in robes and storage area. The back door leads to the garage. The house has central heating but is not air-conditioned. This is because even in the hottest summer days, the altitude of the village and its micro-climate mean that there is a breeze through the house and it is cooler than the surrounding areas. Elegant column fans in all the bedrooms help to keep you cool on the hottest days.

NOTE: Wi-Fi access is available free of charge; however, despite subscribing to the best package available, the connection speed at the village is not great so streaming video etc. will not be as fast as you might expect. The nearby local café also offers free Wi-Fi all year round.

Lesvos (or Lesbos) is the third biggest Greek island and well off the beaten track offering a truly genuine experience. With its beautiful beaches, bays and coves, it is mountainous and green with well-tended olive groves and pristine pine forests on the east side, while the west part of the island presents a rugged and volcanic landscape. Lesvos offers a variety of things to see and explore: a petrified forest, Venetian castles and Roman aqueducts, Byzantine churches and monasteries, Turkish baths and Ottoman architecture, amazing food and endless vistas. Visit Matt Barrett's website for one of the most comprehensive guides to Lesvos.

Mytilini, the capital of Lesvos, is a beautiful town to spend a few days in and affords the opportunity of a day trip across to Turkey to visit Ayvalik and the ancient city of Pergamon. Those travelers who take the time to visit Lesvos are richly rewarded as it offers so much to see and do that it is a year-round holiday destination.

House rules

The house is not baby proof and the interior stairwell would be a hazard for toddlers as it is open. Therefore, we do not recommend the house for very young kids.

“Pithari House perfect for an extended stay”

Reviewed 7 Jul 2015

We spent a week in the delightful village of Skalochori on the Greek island of Lesvos in the beautifully appointed Pithari Holiday House. There were 5 of us, and not one complaint. The house is brilliantly situated for exploration of the island -- and to be honest, it was so comfortable, we seldom got away early in the day. The owners are clearly perfectly tuned to the need of travellers, and the village people are kind, generous and always eager to help. We ate at the village taverna twice and the food was delicious, plentiful and really cheap - even for the two South Africans with an unfavourable exchange rate. The sites at Sigri, ancient Adissa, and the petrified forest, as well as the beautiful villages of Molyvos, Eresou and Skala Sikamineas, are accessible daytrips, not to forget our own beach at Kalo Limani, and the sardines at Skala Kalloni. Highly recommended.

Owner's reply: We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay in Pithari! We hope you will return to the beautiful island of Lesvos and explore some more in the future! Thank you for your review, Brett and Penelope

“Au centre du village”

Reviewed 2 May 2015

Owner's reply: Thank you for leaving a review and your feedback on the map! We'll make sure to refine it for future guests! So glad you enjoyed your time in Pithari and on Lesvos!! Best regards, Penelope
