Location description from manager

The Turkish Mediterranean Coast region

Ancient Lycia in south western Turkey runs from Ekincik to Antalya in a semi-circle of some of the most mountainous and dramatic landscape anywhere in Turkey. The Taurus Mountains rise to over ten thousand feet and the highest peaks are snow covered right into early summer. It's magnificent scenery with it's lakes, woods and forests, it's stunning coast line and superb ruins of two dozen cities make Lycia a place to explore and enjoy.

Lycia's coast line runs for several hundred kilometres, borders the Mediterranean and attracts yachtsmen to the crystal clear waters and near perfect climate. The many islands, coves and beautiful beaches such as Patara, one of the top ten in the world ( Sunday Times 2005) and Kaputus, within 15 minutes of Kalkan and Olu Deniz, 45 minutes away, add to Lycia 's unique historic and scenic appeal to visitors.
At a latitude of 36 degrees, Kalkan is one of the most southerly points of Turkey's Mediterranean coast and enjoys sunny, warm days most of the year. Spring and autumn are popular times to visit with temperatures into the 70's not unusual right through to December.

The UNESCO world heritage site of Xanthos was Lycia's capital city for much of it's history and the ruins of the principal cities of Tlos, Myra, Pinara and Partara, all close to Kalkan attract visitors from all over the world to look at the ancient ruins dating back over 2000 years. The British museum also has an extensive collection of Lycian artefacts.

Kalkan

Villa Lilia is located in the historic harbour town of Kalkan, an enchanting place in one of the most beautiful locations on Turkey's gorgeous Mediterranean coast.

Kalkan bay will take your breath away. It's crystal clear Turquoise water, and mountains that rise steeply behind it provide a dramatic and beautiful backdrop in which to enjoy your stay. Kalkan has not been touched by mass tourism, and as a result remains unspoiled, upmarket and very charming, with amazing views at every turn.

Strict building codes ensure the towns historic preservation, and the many fine restaurants contribute to the special atmosphere that brings back visitors time and time again.
Narrow cobbled streets that wind away from the harbour with bougainvillea covered wooden ottoman balconies and historic architecture are typical of the old town, and the warm Turkish hospitality will stay with you long after your holiday is over.

Beach Clubs
There are a number of beach clubs around the bay that can be reached by free shuttle service from the harbour. These are wonderful paved platform terraces and gardens with ladders going into the sea. They offer swimming, sunbathing, water sports and restaurant/bar facilities and have sun beds and umbrellas for hire.
Water sports
Jet skiing, water skiing, parasailing and banana boat rides are available from the beach clubs around the bay.

Diving
Kalkan's crystal clear waters are popular with scuba divers and is a top location for diving along Turkey 's coast. It has several sites including islands and reefs with a huge variety of marine life including turtles, nurse sharks, dolphins and barracudas. Kalkan Dive centre can be contacted on www.kalkandiving.com

River Tubing
Enjoy floating down the shallow Sakilkent River with your tube and paddle. It's great fun and lasts between 45 minutes and a couple of hours depending on which trip you choose. River tubing can be booked in Kalkan at one of the tour companies or you can join the tour just outside Sakilkent Gorge.

River Canoeing
Enjoy a day canoeing on the Xanthos River near to Kalkan. Experienced guides take you downstream through some beautiful scenery. A barbecue lunch is served along the way, and there is an opportunity for a revitalising mud bath before the tour finishes at beautiful Patara beach for a swim.

Boat Trips
Relax on a day trip around the bays and Islands of Kalkan on a traditional Turkish Gullet and visit beautiful Kaputus beach, Snake Island , the blue cave and aquarium bay. Tours leave at 10.00 am from the harbour and return around 5.00pm . There is plenty of time for swimming, and lunch is served on board.

A very popular trip is to the ancient sunken city of Simena in the area of Kekova, one of the most beautiful areas of the Lycian coast.A terrible earthquake in the 2nd century AD caused a downward shift of land and the submerged ancient houses can be viewed through glass bottom boats. Boat trips can be booked direct at the harbour or through the tour companies in Kalkan.

Sightseeing
Within easy reach of Kalkan are the ruins of the ancient Lycian capital of Xanthos, its port Patara, religious centre Letoon, and also Pinara.

Xanthos was discovered in 1838 by the archaeologist Charles Fellows. Today a mixture of ruins from Roman, Lycian and Byzantine times including the Tomb of the Harpies, theatre, Neried monument and Inscribed pillar can be seen. At the holy Lycian centre of Letoon there are 3 temples dedicated to Leto, Artemis and Apollo, gods of mythology.

Patara is very close to Kalkan and famous as being the birth place of St Nicholas who has entered into Christian tradition as Father Christmas, and for having many interesting ruins. It was an important commercial centre and harbour during the 5th century. A day trip to Patara can include beautiful Patara beach, one of the best in Turkey and a perfect place to relax after a bit if sightseeing.

There are several beautiful beaches in and around Kalkan. The main beach in Kalkan is next to the harbour and old town. It has crystal clear aquamarine water and white pebbles. Sunbeds and umbrellas can be hired for around 3 Turkish Lira a day. It's location next to the harbour make it a very popular place for soaking up the atmosphere of the early evening and watching the boats come back to harbour.

Kaputus Beach
Ten minutes from Kalkan is beautiful Kaputus beach, a sandy cove at the foot of a mountain gorge. The turquoise water is incredible and this beach is used in many travel brochures for Turkey . There are cheap and frequent Dolmuses (shared minibuses) from Kalkan.

Patara beach is a completely undeveloped 12km stretch of sandy beach voted one of the best in the world by Times online for 2005.

“Pretty much perfect”

Reviewed 5 Oct 2012

We have just got back from a week's holiday at this lovely villa in Kalkan. We have never been to Turkey before. After looking a several villas, Villa Lilia seemed to tick all the boxes for us and having stayed there it certainly did. The Turquoise Collection staff were always helpful and informative and I would recommend booking a villa or holiday through them without hesitation. Villa Lilia is at the end of a private road just past the Regency Hotel. On one side there is nothing but olive groves and on the other is mirror image villa (Villa Alicia) which can also be rented through Turquoise Collection. Next to that are the Korsan Suites, luxury apartments with a communal swimming pool. There is nothing infront of the villa which for Kalkan is quite rare. The view from the villa is lovely, overlooking Kalkan bay, you don't get sunsets but it is very tranquil to sit on the terrace and look out to sea. The terrace at Villa Lilia is large and spacious so when the sun moves round you have room to move the sunbeds round. The pool however is not idea, but by Kalkan standards it is a reasonable size, most villa pools are very small. I think the dimensions of the pool were around 8x4 metres, but the three steps to get into the pool spread across the whole width of the pool and are very steep and wide. This makes swimming lengths difficult and would make the pool unsuitable for small children or toddlers. There is no shallow end either unless you count the three steps. However I am a serious swimmer, swimming half a mile each day and I did manage this in the pool so it didn't impact on my holiday at all. The villa is very well equipped inside, the open plan lounge and kitchen are furnished to a high standard, the sofas are comfortable and all the white goods are good quality. There is also a large water cooler which was much better than having to go to the supermarket. When we ran out of water there is a number to call and they come and replace the large drum of water for you within a couple of hours for 6TL (£2.50) On the first floor is a large double bedroom with beautiful sea views, ensuite shower room and big balcony. There is also a twin bedroom with ensuite shower room. This has a small balcony overlooking the olive groves but no sea view. On the next floor is the Master Bedroom suite, again with large balcony, large bathroom with walk in shower and jet bath and a dressing room. Finally on the top floor is another smaller twin room with ensuite shower room, it has no balcony but on the same floor is a small kitchenette with sink and fridge freezer and off there is the roof terrace. The towels provided were large and fluffy of a five star hotel quality. There is good wifi at the villa but it doesn't reach up to the master bedroom suite or higher. The hub is in a cupboard in the living room on the ground floor so it may help if this was relocated to somewhere on the first floor for all over wifi coverage around the villa. The design of the villa is lovely but really only for able bodied and not families with small children. To get to the villa from the road you have several stairs to climb and then the accomodation is spread over three floors. There are also two steps from the kitchen area to the living room. The location was very good, quiet but an easy walk into Kalkan past the Regency Hotel (we went to the Wednesday night barbeque there which was excellent) and a walk along the Kalamar Road. I would definately recommend the small hairdressing salon you walk past, I think it is called Jasmines, she does very good manicure and pedicure for 50TL for both (around £22). My son also had a shave there and he said it was better for the barber at the end of the Kalamar Road , who does a fantastic haircut. The Turquoise Collection staff in Kalkan were very good, when the airconditioning broke down in my son's bedroom (the first floor twin) I emailed the agent and an engineer was round in a couple of hours. A new part had to be ordered and this was fitted by the evening. Our flight arrived over 30 minutes early but the caretaker Roger, who is lovely, was at the villa to meet us and show us round. We had a lovely holiday at Villa Lilia, we rarely go to the same place twice but we would definately return for here a family holiday as for us it was pretty much perfect.
