Location description from owner

The Turkish Mediterranean Coast region

Kalkan is located on the Turkish Mediterranean coast which is well known for its crystal clear water and mountain backdrops, the scenery is breathtaking. It is known as the “Turquoise Coast” or the Turkish Riviera.

Windsurfing, water-skiing, banana boat rides, parasailing, jet-skiing, pedaloes & scuba diving are all available down at the beach clubs or harbour.

Take a boat trip to chill and relax around the bays and islands of Kalkan, lunch is served onboard, enjoy plenty of swimming and lots of fun.

Our agent will be more than happy to organise tickets for excursions, such as jeep safaris driving up to the mountains for an unforgettable day of adventure and excitement.

Or visit Saklikent, Tlos & Yakapark which is a wonderful way to escape the searing summer heat of the coast, this tour will take you into the Taurus mountain range with its fresh springs cascading to the plain below.

Scuba diving is also available as Kalkan has diving schools offering day trips and PADI open water courses for those looking to establish themselves as a certified diver. Horse riding is available on the beautiful beach at Patara.

Kayaköy is the ghost village worth a visit, after the inhabitants left the village in 1922 to return to Greek soil, the houses, numbering about 3500, where left empty and deserted.

The UNESCO world heritage site of Xanthos was Lycia's capital city for much of it's history and the ruins of the principal cities of Tlos, Myra, Pinara and Partara, all close to Kalkan and attract visitors from all over the world with ruins dating back over 2000 years.

Kalkan is a Mediterranean harbour village with buildings covered in bougainvillea, winding cobbled streets, roof terraces, fabulous restaurants and bars. A picturesque harbour with a recently extended shingle beach more than adequate for swimming and sunbathing and stunning sandy beaches nearby. Kalkans beach is approximately 15-20 minutes walk from Villa Sienna. A dolmus (shared local mini-bus) from the bus station takes 10 minutes to reach Kaputas Beach, a lovely sandy beach perched at the foot of a ravine. To the west is Patara Beach, regularly featured in lists of the top 10 most beautiful and undiscovered beaches in the world and its 18km of fine sand makes it easy to see why. Patara contains many ancient ruins as well as being the birthplace of St Nicholas. The whole beach is a protected area due to the turtles that nest there. There are also several beach clubs in Kalkan with secluded bathing and water sports. There are many ancient sites in the immediate vicinity including Xanthos, Letoon, Pinara, Tlos and Patara.

As a village, Kalkan is far more sophisticated than the average holiday resort and is situated on the Turkish Riviera. It is packed with arguably the best selection of quality restaurants outside Istanbul and those who have discovered this Mediterranean jewel return again and again. One of Kalkans biggest assets is the warm welcome you will receive from the locals, ask any previous visitors and they will tell you all about the friendliness of the people, in the cafes, restaurants and in the village itself.

By daytime Kalkan is very quiet and peaceful. Stroll around the village, look around the small interesting shops, little carpet bazaars and arty jewellery shops and enjoy a glass of apple tea with the local shopkeepers.
Take a cruise aboard a gullet, which takes you over the clear blue waters for which this enchanting area of Turkey is renowned and offers great value for money. Charter a boat privately directly with the crew for the day or half a day, at great prices down at the harbour.

By night, Kalkan is lit up with coloured lanterns displayed outside the numerous shops that line the quaint cobbled streets. As well as the variety of quality eating places on offer there are outdoor cafes and bars catering for varied musical tastes. It is a safe low key environment and families with children and teenagers love Kalkan. The cafes and restaurants cook all food from fresh, so any dietary requirements or fussy eaters will have no problems. All the restaurants & bars welcome children of any age and there are a couple of small music bars with dance floors, for all ages. You can sit cross legged on killims or floor cushions and sample Turkish dishes in the traditional way or indulge in an orgy of seafood in one of the smart waterfront restaurants. There is a taxi rank down in the town, which after a large evening meal you may want to use to go back to the villa ! It should cost you around 10 TL.

Kalkan is a superb place for holidaymakers that do not want to visit large commercialised holiday resorts, as Kalkan consists of mostly privately owned villas, private apartments, small hotels & pensions. You will not find fast food chains, time-share touts or large high-rise hotels, mainly locally owned businesses who take pride in the service they offer. Kalkan offers a friendly & warm Turkish welcome with probably a need for low-heeled footwear, as part of the charm of Kalkan is its winding hilly cobbled streets. Leave your high heels at home and relax at one of Kalkans many restaurants, even the more exclusive do not have a dress code. English is mainly spoken and understood by most people in Kalkan.

Not only is Kalkan beautiful, but unlike other Turkish coastal resort towns Kalkan's main economy is tourism and therefore its citizens put much pride and effort into the town's historic preservation. Because of this, Kalkan has retained the texture of its history by protecting its distinctive Ottoman Greek architecture. Very strict building codes keep the town small and architecturally blended with the historic heart of the town known as "Old Kalkan". Kalkan has a growing number of perennial visitors who say the town is the only holiday destination they would choose to visit repeatedly. There is simply no other town quite like Kalkan along Turkey’s coast.

“Gorgeous villa with spectacular views of beautiful Kalkan”

Reviewed 21 Aug 2016

Lovely villa which is very well presented. Party consisted of 4 adults and 2 teenagers and had plenty of space inside and outside. Villa well equipped, enjoyed the vast array of books available. Teenagers very appreciative of free wifi available! Gorgeous views of Kalkan from all floors but especially from the roof terrace. Outside plenty of sun beds and lovely seating area which was the perfect place for drinks before heading off into town at night. The pool was perfect for cooling off from the sun. Set on steep hill although one of the only ones with steps up the side. Easy walk into Kalkan and plenty of taxis for the return trip, only 10 lira which was about £2.50 for all 6 of us. 3 supermarkets within 10 minute walk away from villa, all well stocked and had everything we needed for the occasional BBQ. Booking of villa very easy and airport transfers very smooth, the welcome pack was a nice touch to off start the holiday. Wishing we were still there.

Owner's reply: Thank you so much for taking the time to leave an honest, helpful & detailed review. Glad you had such a fantastic holiday and look forward to welcoming you back soon.

“Fabulous Villa Fabulous area”

Having been to Turkey 5 times now generally in the Fethiye area we decided on Kalkan, and Im so glad we did. The Villa was very spacious and ,clean, and well equiped. The pool guy came every day and was very polite and helpful,Hamza and his team from Kalkan property services were very helpful also. As per other reviews the area is very hilly as its basically built around the bay.Kalkan itself was beautiful and not commercialised like Olu Deniz and the food and people were superb. The only thing you have to be aware is that the Villa is on a very steep hill and kalkan is narrow cobbled streets but very steep so if your not mobile it will be a problem.Having said all that the walk down is fine a and a taxi back was 12 lira which is like £3!. I would definitely go again, and i would definitely stay at the Sienna.

Second time that we have stayed at Villa Sienna. Both villa and Kalkan were as we remembered. Booking with Tracy was simple, contact was professional and prompt. The villa offers great value for money in a central location. We wanted for nothing and if we return to Kalkan we are sure to stay at Villa Sienna

“Great place to stay”

This is the 2nd time I and my husband and teenage son have stayed in this villa and would recommend it to anyone. The villa is of a very high standard and matches the description by the owner. There are plenty of sun loungers and outdoor furniture and s lovely gazebo if you want the shade. Kalkan is a besutiful place with fantastic restaurants but as the owner shows on the details Kalkan is very steep in parts and would not be suitable for everyone. It is a pleasant walk down into Kalkan but would recommend getting a taxi back. We will definitely go back to this villa as had a fantastic time

“Fab villa”

Reviewed 21 Aug 2014

This was our fourth time in Kalkan, we saw the villa whilst in Kalkan last year and booked it as soon as we arrived home. Lovely villa and location. Up a bit of a hill but most of Kalkan is and there are plenty of cabs available if you do not feel up to the walk back.

“Would do it all again”

Fantastic villa with everything you need. While it is a fair way up the hill, the views make up for the effort to get back. You can even get groceries delivered if you don't want to lug them back up the hill yourself. Would definitely recommend and definitely come back.

“Beautifully appointed villa with views of the harbour and mountains.”

This is the best villa we have stayed at in Kalkan. We stayed here last year and came back this year. Very comfortable and the addition of a Gazibo is a real bonus, affording some shade from the sun and a nice place to have lunch or pre dinner nibbles. We will be back again next year!

“We are already looking at flights for next year!”

We stayed at Villa Sienna with our 3 children (ages 17,15 and 7) and we are already looking at flights and dates for a possible return in 2014. The whole family loved both Kalkan and Villa Sienna. A lovely villa, a convenient location and a fabulous place to holiday. Many thanks

“Amazing Views”

Reviewed 13 Aug 2013

We had a fantastic family holiday at Villa Sienna in Kalkan - perfect villa in a brilliant location with incredible views (advantage of being high in the hills), we'll definitely be back! Even our 3 teenagers said it was the best holiday ever. The beach clubs are perfect around the beautiful bay with the scenic taxi boat ride a lovely start to the day (go early if staying in August they can get busy.) We preferred Mahal beach club which seems more suited to couples and families with teenagers, enjoyed an amazing lunch in the restaurant overlooking the sea and lazed around on gorgeous terraces with huge umbrellas and sun loungers before jumping in the turquoise clear sea for a cool off. Bliss. Cost around £20 for the day each inc lunch. The night life, restaurants, bars and shopping in Kalkan all set around the harbour are ideal for family holidays and romantic stays alike - so unbelievably pretty with lots going on, very clean and beautifully lit. Gironda's was our favourite restaurant, sit on the roof terraces and look out across the water and mountains listening to live music - all for around £22 per person for main course and wine etc. Only caution in visiting Kalkan would be the hilly streets and steps might be tricky for anyone who finds lots of walking difficult. We hired a car which was a bonus for the trips into town and exploring - park on the road at the bottom of the villa; however most people seem to prefer to use the abundant taxis or are happy to walk. The all day boat trips are a must, around £15 each inc lunch with lots of stops for swimming and snorkelling. Kaputas beach was our favourite for swimming (don't let the 187 steps put you off), pebbly with amazing turquoise water and mountainous backdrop. Our wonderful holiday at Villa Sienna in Kalkan afforded us just the right mix of plenty to do and see and total relaxation in beautiful surroundings; wish we were back there right now...

“Exceeded expectations, great value and a fantastic location!”

Reviewed 5 Aug 2013

We were picked up by an air conditioned minibus and although late the journey was smooth and passed quickly. At the villa we were met by the villa manager who showed us the ropes and our holiday began. I loved that the villa was spacious and fantastic for our needs, pool side had plenty of loungers, bean bags and a gazebo for the time you needed shade. We had a few BBQ's at the villa as the evenings were so light and slightly cooler but it was the buzzing town that drew us. So many restaurants to choose from we were spoilt for choice. This was just a 10-15 minute stroll downhill (I would suggest getting a taxi back however]. There was plenty of storage in the bedrooms to put stuff away and really feel at home and plenty of bathrooms for everyone. Even with the newly built villa towards the front, it did not detract from the views and ambiance of the outdoor area. I'd love to come back and the only thing I could improve on are a few more outdoor lights near the outside dining area as we loved sitting out there to eat so much. The kitchen could also do with more task lighting but we weren't in much in the evening to really care. Overall a beautiful, stay in just the right location. Friendly people, fantastic nightlife. Top Tip: definitely hire a private boat for the day. We did this twice and it was out of this world cruising round the coast, stopping to swim and snorkel or just lie on the secluded beaches, followed by really tasty lunches and refreshments or a tipple.
