The Chania Prefecture region
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and is in the Mediterranean Sea between the Sea of Crete and the Libyan Sea, south of the Peloponnese. Crete is approximately 260 km long and 60 km wide. Crete consists of four prefectures: Chania, Rethimno, Heraklion and Lasithi. If there was a beauty contest for Greek islands, Crete would surely be among the favorites. Indeed, some say there is no place on earth like Crete. This view is strongly supported by those fortunate enough to have visited the island. Crete, with a population of approximately 650,000, is not just sun, sea and sand; it is a quite distinct place full of vitality, warmth, hospitality, culture and of course an excellent infrastructure. Crete is well known for its seas and beaches but it has a very contrasting landscape. The island goes from fertile coastal plains to rugged mountains and from busy metropolitan cities to very peaceful hillside homes. If you travel throughout Crete you can clearly see remnants of Roman and Turkish aqueducts and architecture from when these people invaded the island long ago
Plaka village square is only 1km from Villa Damythsi and is an easy 15 minute walk.
The village has 3 excellent tavernas, 2 well stocked mini markets and 5 cafes. 3 of these cafes are just a short five minute walk from the villa.
Villa Damythsi is just 5 minutes by car to the lovely village of Almyrida which is built around a crescent shaped sandy beach. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children.
Surrounding the beach are many excellent tavernas, cafes and shops. Also in Almyrida there is a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans. There is also a diving school which caters for all abilities (see link).
There are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with excellent tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Chorio. The historic town of Chania is only 35 minutes away by car.
Approximately 15 mins away there is a beautiful beach at the town of Kalyves, where there are numerous Banks, shops and restaurants.

"Fabulous villa with stunning views!"
What an absolute gem of a place. Villa was just as described, new and modern. Really liked having a welcome pack a real bonus when you arrive late, had coffee, tea, bread, cheese, milk, jams and a lovely bottle of white wine, it was much appreciated at 11pm. Views from the villa are wonderful especially the great sunsets. Food wise no need to go any further than plaka, we tried all 4 restaurants in the square. Went twice to Elpis food great huge portions and the bread they make themselves. Takas restaurant more traditional but still just as good, the cheapest by far is what I would call big Mama's (not its real name) the smallest of the restaurants food was great and very cheap! However, to walk to plaka when it's so hot was not for us, I reckon it would have taken a good 20 mins and on the way back its all up hill, maybe for the younger ones this one. My only suggestion for the villa would be to have wifi, I took my ipad and couldn't use it as had a USB Internet connection only, was able though to use in restaurants in plaka. On a final note we loved it and a week was not enough, would definitely go back and will recommend to our friends. Thanks
