Location description from owner

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region

La Gaitrie is in the Poitou-Charentes region of south-west France, within one hour's drive of Bordeaux and Cognac.

La Gaitrie is located on the edge of a quiet hamlet in the heart of beautiful countryside, a short drive from a bakery in Léoville and from the village of Montendre which has an excellent Thursday market, supermarket, tennis courts, horse riding, bike hire, a six-hole golf course and a swimming lake.

Said to be the sunniest region of France, after the Med coast, this gently undulating, tranquil farming country is perfect for cyclists.

Jonzac

There are restaurants and a wider range of shops in the elegantly pretty town of Jonzac (20 minutes), as well as a tropical leisure pool complex (Les Antilles) with free internet access, a cafe and bar.

The Gironde estuary is just 35km away. The Blaye/Lamarque ferry provides easy access to the famous Medoc vineyards and sandy Atlantic beaches. There are further excellent beaches in and around Royan (79km).

The vineyards of St Emilion are one and a quarter hours drive.

On the banks of the River Charente, the lovely town of Cognac with its famous distilleries is less than one hour's drive away. There are 18 hole golf courses in Saintes and Cognac.

“Relaxing holiday for all the family- happy kids=>happy parents”

Reviewed 1 Aug 2013

La Gaitrie is a spacious, well kept, clean and well equipped property. This was our 4th year holidaying in a large house with pool in France and it was the nicest one so far. Our kids range in age from 10 to 16. They played table football, table tennis, boules, board games, watched some tv and had a swim every day in the beautiful clean infinity pool. (The fact it was heated and lit at night meant we could enjoy a swim under the stars after dark). They all had their own room and had plenty of places to get away from us in this huge house! The wi-fi access meant they could keep in touch with things at home. Dad brought our skycard and could watch our local hurling matches as if he were at home. So with the kids and hubbie happy, I was able to relax by the pool and read a few books. We spent a day in Bordeaux (40 mins drive to Les Aubiers park & ride tram & total cost of €3.20 for all of us to travel into Bordeaux and back including parking the car!). We went tree climbing in an Indian Forest, karting in Royan. We had a 3 course meal in a local Michelin bib restaurant which cost €29.50pp. (Recommended by Venetia in her red book). This was easily the best value for money meal we have ever eaten. There were covered areas around the pool for those who did not like being out in the sun. The covered parking area kept the car cool and was really valued on those hot days when getting into the car would be like getting into a sauna. The downstairs bedrooms were surprisingly cool at night. The fans were on the go upstairs in the hot nights. We were so sorry to be going home.

“Gorgeous house, loads of character, shed loads of space, VERY tranquil location”

If you are looking to get away from it all this is it! it is set in pretty countryside and has lots of areas ro relax so you can get away from eachother if need be! A lovely big kitchen with everything in it. Big table both for inside and outside dining(located right by french doors to kitchen which was most conveniennt for dinner prep!!)...heated salt swimming pool wonderful, very well used especially as its right by the outdoor shaded dining table. My older yet active mum (who is not interested in sitting in sun or lying on a sun lounger) spent loads of time sitting and reading at the table and could still be part of everything going on by or in the pool with the younger generations. Nice big games room, lovely living room.....wifi was a tad slow and limited to certain areas but at least it was available. Very well equipped overall, great laundry room....shame we never used the bikes!
