This attractive village, beloved of artists. is an ideal place for a holiday, being centrally placed for the mountains and the sea. and on the very edge of one of the largest wild areas left in Europe, the Alcornocales Park. It is particularly good for walkers, bird watchers and botanisers and is surrounded by villages and towns of archaeological and historic interest. Fans are provided for the summer months and electric radiators and gas stoves for the winter.
Swimming towels are provided so that you do not have to travel with them. The pool is 6.30 metres x 3m. x 1.50 all over. Beside it is a bougainvillea covered arbour.
The house is very well stocked with reading matter to suit all tastes and jigsaw puzzles and has a very extensive information book about what to do and what to see in the immediate area. The owner is an archaeologist who can advise on sites to visit. She is also interested in the local wild flowers and can advise where best to see them
The house is on a fairly steep hill going up to the castle. It has an open staircase (as do most of the houses here) but does have a rail. It is not recommended for small children who are not used to such hazards although many toddlers have stayed there without a problem. It depends both on the parents and the children!
The Andalucia region
Jimena is in inland Spain a good hour and a half drive from the Costa de la Luz. but within half an hour of good beaches It is in the foothills of the Ronda mountains midway between Gibraltar and Ronda and twenty minutes from Gaucin. It is right on the edge of the Alcornocale Park one of the most extensive wild areas left in Europe.
The area is a very beautiful one of forested mountains and deep valleys . It is served by three rivers. The Hozgarganta which flows below Jimena is reckoned the cleanest river in Spain. Its oleander-fringed pools are a delight to swim in. There is rarely any rain from May to October and winters can be delightful when it is not raining. Even so the rain comes in intensive bursts with brilliant sun between so that it is possible to sunbathe all winter if out of the wind. The best month of the year, when the whole area is ablaze with wild flowers, is May. August can be very hot. The whole area is full of interest with wonderful old towns such as Ronda, Arcos, Jerez, Seville, Cadiz to explore, the beaches within half an hour and a lot to do. A boat trip of under one hour will take you to mysterious Morocco.
Jimena De La Frontera
Jimena de la Frontera is one of the "White Villages" of the Ronda area. It is a very pretty village built on a free standing hill crowned by a Romano-Moorish castle. Every street is picturesque. Donkeys and mules still wander around and the local people are very friendly. It remains the real Spain. The valley in front is agricultural growing mainly oranges while behind in the mountains stretch extensive and magnificent cork forests and almost undisturbed forests of Canary Oak. For bird watchers and botanists this is a paradise. The main industries are cork cutting, the collecting of chanterelles and the collecting of heather roots for Briar pipe making. Jimena has an international music festival and many musical events throughout the year. Horse-riding, tennis and go -carting can be had locally, wind-surfing but a short distance away and it is but half an hour to visit a local zoo, water park or the golf courses and polo grounds of Sotogrande. It holds a very popular annual fungus conference!.
