Cihangir is one of the neighborhoods of the Beyoglu district in Istanbul, Turkey. The neighborhood has many narrow streets, a park, and street cafes. It is located between Taksim Square and Kabatas.

During Byzantine times, the area of the present neighborhood was probably not settled, although there were Byzantine buildings near present-day Tophane and Findikli along the Bosphorus below Cihangir.
During the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, the area was a forested hunting ground. It was one of the favorite places of Suleiman's son Cihangir, and after Cihangir's death, Suleiman had Mimar Sinan build a wooden mosque there overlooking the Bosphorus. The neighborhood's name comes from this mosque.
In the last half of the nineteenth century, the increasing influx of non-Ottoman Europeans into Istanbul drove up real estate prices in the nearby Pera district in Beyoglu, to which they were officially confined. Some Europeans, however, acquired land in areas outside Pera such as Tophane, Findikli, and Cihangir, leading to a great deal of residential development in those neighborhoods.
Starting in the 1930s, non-Muslim residents of Cihangir and the rest of Beyoglu left or were forced out. They were replaced by Muslims from other Istanbul neighborhoods and by internal migrants from eastern Turkey. As the character of the neighborhood changed, middle-class Muslims also began leaving the neighborhood. By the 1970s, Cihangir was known as a neighborhood where Anatolian migrants lived alongside artists and intellectuals.

“Excellent”

Reviewed 4 Jul 2013

I stayed in this studio for the second time in June 13. For a studio apartment although basic, it is very spacious and located in the centre of Cihangir just off Siriselvier Street. There are plenty of cafes and eateries within in walking distance, and is perfect for a single traveler or couple, looking to stay in a stylish area close to Taksim. The studio is furnished tastefully, very clean and provides basic cooking facilities, a kettle and coffee maker. Karin is more than helpful, always eager to ensure that your stay is as easy as possible. She even came and met me during my first stay as i was wandering around lost in Cihangir.

“Room is fine but noisy”

Reviewed 3 May 2013

A great loaction and the room was clean and ex issues with hot water - it stopped twice but was quickly fixed - and wifi - 36 hours before it worked albeit they knew when I arrived there were problems I have no issues - an 8 out of 10 BUT the street noise is excessive. Flat is beside a hospital and hill parking and at the top of a hill. Week days were not so bad but Friday and Saturday goes on till 4 am then starts up again at 7. NOT a jet lag recovery spot.
