Location description from owner

The Tuscany region

Siena is in the heart of Tuscany and the Chianti wine region. The region is bursting with history, the city of Siena still stands within its ancient walls and the magnificent cathedral and the Torre della Mangia can be seen from a distance, bursting free from the confines of the city. Close by are Florence, San Gimignano, famous for its towers, and Pisa. The weather is warm from as early as April and temperatures climb steadily from around 66F in April to 86F in August before falling to a balmy 65F in October.

Isola d'Arbia

Local restaurants offer typical Tuscan gastronomic delights and a wide range of local wines and liquers. The village boasts 2 restaurants and bars, a pizzeria, a delicatessen and a village store.

Nearby Siena is most famous for its ancient bareback horse race, the Palio, in which the Contradas of Siena compete for a hand painted silk Palio, racing bareback around the Piazza. This colourful, breathtaking event, preceded by a procession of the contradas in medieaval costume and followed by feasting in the streets, takes place on the 2nd July and 16th August each year. There is a weekly open air market every Wednesday morning in Siena, full of bargains not to be missed. The pretty village of Monteriggione stand on top of a hill just a few kilometres to the north of Siena, and is certainly worth a visit. Take a trip back in time on the Treno Natura, a steam train that runs from Siena and winds through the Tuscan countryside From Siena to Asciano and Monte Antico. Sundays throughout the summer.

Sagre, or food fests, are not to be missed. Held at various times throughout the year to celebrate various delicacies such as the porcini mushrooms.

Cinema Under the Stars. Open air cinema events held at the Fortezza.

Famous for the Chigiana music academy, Siena is full of music throughout the year with open air jazz and clasical music festivals. Some of the most spectacular are held in the Piazza del Campo and accompanied by fireworks.

The area abounds with spas. For those who are looking for some pampering or relaxation, try Chanciano Terme, Petriolo Terme or Montepulciano Terme

For those happy to travel a bit further afield, the festivals are endless, from the Festival of Crickets in Florence, where crickets can be bought in tiny woven straw cages and then released for luck (Florence, May), the Regatta di San Ranieri where costumed boat races take place along the Arno (Pisa, June), the Calcio in Costume (costumed football matches, Florence, June), the Baccanala (food and wine festival in Montepulciano, August) and the 3 week Carnivale in Viareggio, world famous for its stupendous floats, (Viareggio, February), the Eurochocolate Festival in Perugia (October) to the food, culture and music festivals too many to mention, there is something for everyone.

“Perfect spot to explore Tuscany”

Reviewed 28 Apr 2013

The apartment is small but well-positioned about 10 minutes drive from Siena. The township has a good shop and there is an excellent restaurant within five minutes drive. Good holiday space for a couple or a small family.
