Location description from owner

The England region

There is plenty to see and do in Dorset, from baby swans at Abbotsbury to beer festivals in Beaminster. Classic countryside meets heritage coast in south Dorset.Situated at the heart of Dorset's Jurassic Coast, Weymouth & Portland is an excellent base for exploring South Dorset's coast and countryside. Weymouth offers a lively nightlife, high street shops and a sweeping sandy beach, whilst by contrast Portland has an altogether slower paced and less hectic feel. Leisure activities including fishing, diving, bird watching, rock climbing, walking and a variety of water sports, including sailing at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy, venue for the sailing events at the 2012 Olympic Games.

The Classic Seaside Resort of Weymouth, with its fantastic beach and vibrant harbour, nestles perfectly alongside the rugged 'Isle' of Portland, the perfect place for visitors who just want to get away from it all. With plenty of places to eat and drink, and all year round events, attractions and activities there's something for everyone, isn't it time you discovered Weymouth and Portland?

Isle of Portland

Portland is a wealth of adventure at any time of year. There are several beaches each with its own very distinct character. Chesil is the closest and is considered a geographical wonder. The beach runs from Portland all the way to Bridport, and is not only very beautiful to look at, but is also a protected wildlife habitat, a source of income for local fishermen ( oysters are grown in it now ) and great place to go walking or just generally spending time. Portland Bill is a well know Portland landmark for the lighthouse, and the huge rock formation Pulpit Rock. Portland Bill also features the ever popular restaurant The Lobster Pot that sells genuinely local fare with a fantastic view.

On the Chesil Beach side of Portland is 'The Cove' which incorporates the sea wall defences as well as a fantastic pub ( called the Cove ). Portland Harbour, as seen in the recent Olympics, the harbour is large and incorporates commercial shipping in Portland Dockyard as well as more public areas for sailing, walking not to mention all the extreme watersports like kite surfing and windsurfing. Its also very popular with divers for the various shipwrecks dotted about.

The shoreline makes a fantastic place for children as the water is very shallow, like Weymouth Beach and is rich with wildlife Sandsfoot beach is the closest child friendly beach thats used for swimming ( the harbour being used for sports predominantly ). Like the rest of the harbour its shallow and safe for toddlers. It also features lots of exploring for older children amongst the various rock pools. The area also features Sandsfoot Castle set in lovely gardens, another place ideal for children to explore.

Weymouth is a typical Victorian south coast beach destination. It was first made popular by King George III. It features a sandy beach near the harbour which gradually degrades to pebbles as you leave Weymouth. The town features all the convinces you could need, large supermarkets, great restaurants and bars as well as high street names like M&S, McDonalds and Debhanams. For children the beach is ideal, sandy, gently sloping for miles and has no fast tides.

For adults there is plenty of nightlife. The Fleet inside of Chesil Beach is known as the Fleet Lagoon. It is a vast area that stretches nearly as far as the beach and is a haven for wildlife, especially birds. The area is great for children and adults alike. The entire shore area is accessible and makes fantastic walking any time of year but is especially beautiful during the autumn. There are a variety of tourist attractions along its length such as The Swannery at Abbotsbury Surrounding Dorset. The immediate attractions are too numerous to list extensively but amongst them in local area are Durdle Door, Dorchester the county town of Dorset, The Purbecks and surrounding area, The Cerne Abbas Giant. The list goes on and on…

It goes without saying, the area is extremely popular for sports. The harbour was recently used for all the Olympic sailing events so is obviously well equipped for that, but prior to that the harbour has been more widely know for windsurfing and more recently Kite surfing. There are various skate park facilities in the area as well as massive tracts of land that are available for walking, mountain biking and horse riding. Portland is a great base of you love any of the following activities;Sailing – goes without saying for all classes of boats, Walking – part of the National Coastal Path, Wind Surfing, Kite Surfing, Moutain Biking, Diving, BMX / Skate boarding and Horseriding.

“Summer holiday 2012”

Reviewed 17 Sep 2012

Perfect family cottage set in beautiful location and stunning views! We stayed at this cottage late August 2012 for 7 nights. Booking was made very easy through the managing estate agents Red House, who were excellent at communicating and responding to any queries and emails. The property was located towards the top of Portland, and thus giving the spectacular views of the island and the connecting land onto the mainland. The grounds were very well kept, with a nice garden, potted plants and patio area which has a few chairs, table and a BBQ. There is parking space for 2 cars outside the property. Inside the property was clean and tidy. Bedrooms were decent sized, and there was only one double bedroom. The rest were twin rooms. My bed was slightly creaky! Bed linen and towels were provided and were to a good standard. The kitchen is open plan style along with the dining area/conservatory. Modern gas cooker , dishwasher and oven, 2 fridges, and plenty of cupboard space provided for adequate cooking and clearing up! There is a vacuum cleaner, washing machine, tumble dryer and ironing board as additional facilities. The entire house has wifi access and phone reception did not seem to be an issue at the property. We very much enjoyed our stay here on Portland. There is plenty to do on the island and surrounding areas of Weymouth and Dorset's coastal regions, with the property having a good central location. Restaurants were excellent when we dined, with plenty of fresh seafood on offer at sometimes seemingly high but very reasonable prices when portion sizes were large! The neighbours were very welcoming and friendly. Overall we all had a lovely time and would definitely recommend this cottage to others!
