Location description from owner

The England region

Dorset is a beautiful part of the west country with rolling hills and fields studded with picturesque villages and a stunning coastline with spectacular views. From Lyme regis to Lulworth Cove the coast is famed for its beauty and its fossils, it has a rich history of wrecks and smuggling, with lovely coves and inlets, cliffs and sweeping views.

Chesil beach is a geological phenomenon stretching 17 miles from Abbotsbury, a delightful village boasting an ancient hilltop abbey to Portland itself. Nearby Weymouth offers all the traditional joys of an English seaside town, candy floss, fresh fish and chips, fairground and donkey rides, a beautiful white sandy beach and a picturesque harbour.

Isle of Portland

The Island of Portland is not actually and Island but a peninsular connected to the mainland by road and by chesil beach. Famous for its stone and its lighthouse it has far more to offer. Its rocky coastline with steep cliffs, grassy headlands, caves, spectacular seas and views of the mainland provide opportunities for hiking, bird watching, fossil hunting, climbing, fishing, swimming and exploring.

The house is in a prime location to discover all the unique delights and opportunities that the Island of Portland has to offer, and with the Portland Marina just 10 minutes away there are a wealth of activities on offer including sailing, diving, canoeing, wind and kite surfing.

Its also forms a great base from which to explore Dorset and the spectacular Jurassic coastline.

“Idyllic location, lovely cottage, very spacious”

Reviewed 25 Aug 2013

We enjoyed a beautiful week on Portland staying at 1 Bow & Arrow Cottages. The house is set over three floors with four spacious bedrooms - all the beds were very comfortable. We loved the downstairs walk-in-shower. Well equipped with everything you could need for a family stay in the spacious kitchen. We went with three adults and five children aged 5-8. No parking outside the property but parking on the main road just 100 yds or so away was never a problem. We loved Church Ope Cove - one of my favourite spots in the world, not least because this is where I grew up. We walked down of an evening (just 100 yds to the top of the steps down) for a spot of fully-clothed paddling which turned into something more like swimming! The call of sand was too much for the children though so we ventured into Weymouth for three days on the sand of Weymouth beach. The children also loved Portland Bill, Chesil Beach, moonfleet and Sandsfoot (although sadly the main beach at Sandsfoot is now closed).
