The Hebrides region
Lewis is the largest and most populous of the Outer Hebridean islands, with over 6000 residents living in the main port of Stornoway alone. Bursting with world famous archaeological sites, Lewis holds the Neolithic 'Callanish Stones,' (which predate the Egyptian Pyramids) the Pictish Carloway Broch (roundhouse) the Norse mill house and many more.
The west coast of these islands experience the full impact of the North Atlantic swells and have the most consistent surf in Europe. The entire landscape of the island is built for adventure with challenging sea cliffs to abseil and bays and islands to explore by kayak or boat.
The main town of Stornoway surprises most first time visitors as it has all the amenities and industry of a small mainland town, as well as a lively and vibrant social scene, especially at the weekends! There are a host of pubs, restaurants to keep you busy as well as organised events and ceilidhs. In Stornoway, the Lews Castle grounds is an extensive mixed woodlands planted in the mid 19th century by Sir James Matheson and now owned by the community. There is a huge variety of trees including some rare foreign species. Common seals fill the harbour and it is likely that you will spot dolphins, whales and sharks if you venture out onto the water.
Isle of Lewis
The Outer Hebrides have been inhabited for 6,000 years and many historical sites and standing stones tell of an intriguing past.
Arts and culture
The Outer Hebrides is a source of inspiration for artists whose work can be viewed in town shops, galleries and studios.
The Outer Hebrides is the heartland of Gaelic culture and the language is still spoken by many islanders today. You can take part in many events which feature the language and music.

"Wunderbare Oase der Ruhe"
Sehr gut und schön eingerichteter Hausteil, freundliche und zuvorkommende Vermieter. Besonders schön ist das grosszügige Wohnzimmer mit dem grossen Panoramafenster. Bestens eingerichtete Küche für Selbstversorger. Im Esszimmer gibt es Wanderkarten, Bildbände und jede Menge englischsprachige Literatur. Ideal als Ausgangspunkt für Ausflüge auf den Inseln Lewis und Harris.

"Best in the west!"
This was our first visit to the Outer Hebrides and we were delighted with the friendly welcome we got from Fiona and Finlay to their beautiful and comfortable property which constitutes one part of a larger and totally renovated croft house. The property was well equipped and furnished to a high standard. It is well located to access Stornoway by car for sightseeing and evening meals and for exploring the rest of Lewis and Harris. We learned from Finlay that "Taigh Geal" is Gaelic for White House.

"Superb base for exploring Lewis & Harris"
Very comfortable cottage with high quality fittings and a real homely feel. The sitting room with its beautiful view over sheep fields to the sea was a treat to come back to in the evenings. Everything you could wish for: a great selection of books, dishwasher and washing machine, wifi etc. Fiona and Finlay were charming and helpful, but also very discrete. Excellent central location with easy access to all the main routes to attractions in Lewis and Harris. Perfect for couples wanting to get away from it all!
