The Hebrides region
Many seabirds inhabit the coastal areas of Lewis including kittiwakes, guillemots, shag, gannets, fulmars, oyster catchers and curlews to name but a few. On coastal cliffs we find merlins and numerous buzzards.
Salmon frequent many Lewis rivers after crossing the Atlantic. There are dozens of brown trout lochs nearby, most of which can be fished free of charge. Permits for salmon and trout fishing can be obtained on request. Offshore, it is common to see seals, dolphins, porpoises and basking sharks. On land are red deer, mink, seals and otter amongst other mammals.
Different species of orchid and various grasses are to be found on the machair. The Island is commonly called 'Eilean an Fhraoich, after the large expanse of heather-covered moorland.
For golfing enthusiasts there are Golf Courses both in Stornoway (18 Holes) and also Scarista in the Isle of Harris (9 Hole).
During your time here try not to miss out on a day trip it St Kilda. St Kilda is a World Heritage Site and a National Nature Reserve and was designated by UNESCO as Scotland's first World Heritage Site in 1986. It has received many national and international designations in recognition of its outstanding natural and cultural heritage.
Isle of Lewis
The village of Orinsay is situated on the South East coast of Lewis with magnificent sea views over-looking Loch Shell, the Shiant Isles and across the Minch to the Isle of Skye and mainland Scotland.
It is the ideal place to 'chill out' and get away from it all. This is a good base for exploring both Lewis and Harris and is situated in a peaceful village. The area is one of outstanding natural beauty with numerous lochs, mountains and sea views. The cottage is well placed for guests with a variety of pursuits in mind, whether into hillwalking, trout and sea fishing or bird watching. Kayakers and canoeists are most welcome and frequently find the sheltered and crystal clear waters of the Minch ideal for this sport.
The Isle of Lewis is at the North West corner of the group of Islands known as the Hebrides or Western Isles. It stretches for 100 miles and is generally known as the 'long island'. Lewis is steeped in history and culture, ranging back thousands of years. Stornoway is the main port and was named 'Steering Bay' by visiting Vikings in past centuries. The island's diverse habitats are home to an assortment of flora and fauna. Sea eagles, Golden eagles and buzzards nest nearby and are often seen from the cottage.

As soon as my wife and I arrived at Shiant View, we were blown away by the location. Situated in the tiny settlement of Orinsay on a beautiful bay which overlooks the Shiant Islands and on a good day Skye. The first thing we did was stand and listen to the absolute quiet surrounding us apart from the gentle lapping of the shore water. Your neighbours are sheep, otters the occasional seal and a fantastic variety of bird life. In a word stunning. The house itself is fantastic. The amenities are superb from great WiFi and Free Sat TV and DVD and a kitchen packed full of all the utensils you need. The beds are very comfy and you sleep so soundly due to this coupled with the absolute silence at night. The hospitality of Ken and Isobel was fantastic. From the bottle of wine at arrival to being a phone call away for any advice etc. If you prefer something a tad closer to town then they also own a lovely house in stornoway which we hired for our second week. This is called An Airigh and would fully recommend this also. All in all a holiday to truly remember.

"Excellent Location, Great Cottage, Stunning Views"
We have just returned from a week at Shiantview. The cottage has everything you would need whilst away. The welcome from the owners was very friendly and informative. The location is in a very quiet village of only a few properties at the end of a single track road (but has passing places so not an issue). Views are amazing. The only noise you here are the sheep over the fence. Lewis was a beautiful island with fantastic beaches and emerald seas and some good historic sites to see. Stornoway is not far away and has the essentials you would need.

"A Home from Home"
When we arrived we were met and were warmly welcomed by the owners. All our questions on how to get the best out of our holiday were answered with a 'living and working' knowledge of the local and wider areas of the Island (s), including best spots for seeing wildlife, etc. The owners clearly have a wide experience not only of local life but in providing for every eventuality while away from one's own home--the most equipped holiday home we have been in (and we have been holidaying like this for a number of years now). The house was also warm and surprisingly spacious in comparison with the outside--as some put it in the Visitors' Book, 'the house is just like Dr Who's T.A.R.D.I.S.'! We failed to see any otters but we saw (on two mornings) a pair of 'playing' Sea Eagles from the kitchen window! Also a Golden Eagle nearby. It was too early for summer migrant but an Iceland Gull in Stornoway Harbour was a real bonus. The house is equidistant from Stornoway (Lewis) and Tarbert (Harris) and is ideal for exploring Harris and Lewis (though the house is 15 miles from the main road, but the 15 miles is a good road).
Thank you for taking the time to respond. It was a pleasure meeting up with you all.
