Location description from owner

The Andalucia region

Isla Canela

The apartment is situated on Isla Canela, a part of the city of Ayamonte. The natural island boasts seven kilometres of fine sandy beaches, which are framed by sand dunes and pine trees. Another large side of the island is lined by marismas (swamps), where birds enjoy pure nature. The river Guadiana, which forms the border with Portugal, is the last island side. The gentle slope of the Atlantic and the sandbanks just off the coast ensure that the whole beach has a gentle surf and is pleasant for swimming or just relaxing. The island also boasts a fine marina, a few minutes drive away, with sailing, canoeing, kite surfing and shops, bars and restaurants on the quayside, catering for residents and visitors alike. The nearby small fishermensvillage of Punta del Moral lodges several fine fish restaurants that provide delicious meals prepared from fresh ingredients.

Ayamonte

The city (some 18.000 inhabitants) is the most western city of Spain on its Costa de la Luz. It's the place where the Guadiana river enters the Atlantic Ocean. It is part of the province of Huelva, one of the 8 provinces of Andalucia. The Costa de la Luz enjoys a friendly climate 300 days of sunshine a year, so it has more sunshine hours and less rain per year than even the Costa del Sol. In keeping with its name Luz (meaning "light"), the region has long hours of sunlight and beautiful sunsets over the south-facing coastline. The winter daytime temperature seldom falls below 60 degrees Farenheit (16 °C), while the maximum summer temperature is a moderate 86 °F (30 °C) compared to further inland where it can reach 104 °F (40 °C)!
Together with the neighbouring town Isla Cristina, Ayamonte is an important fishing port. Walking through the narrow streets, looking into the shops and relaxing in the pleasant squares, brings the true atmosphere of this part of Spain. The harbour, lined with palm trees and whitewashed houses, adds to the town's attraction, with many superb fish and tapas bars to sample. The nobleness and age of the town are evident amongst its ruins and monuments, with Baroque churches and Manueline influences arising from its close proximity to Portugal. A trip up the river is one activity not to be missed. There are numerous festivals during the year including an international music event in August, the Fiesta del Carmen (for fishermen) in mid July and processions at Easter. The Ayamonte Carnaval is a must-see.

Surroundings

* Still largely untouched by mass tourism exploitation, the original culture and heritage of the local people is very much present with the swamps (marismas), large national parks (Doñana) and bird sanctuaries in the region. Visit also the wonderful Doñana park with the particular town of El Rocio
* In addition to the fabulous beaches, Isla Canela is very close to the border with Portugal with the attractions of the Algarve only a short car journey away. Take a 10 minute ferry trip over to Villa Real de San Antonio (VRSA - Portugal) with its marina, cobbled streets, citrus trees and bars/rest. Truely worth a visit. River trips can be booked from here. The cozy towns of Tavira (20 km) and Faro (60 km) are just half an hour or an hour away such as the lovely town Alcoutim (50 km – inland along the Guadiana river). All in Portugal.
* Near Huelva, the capital of the province, you'll find a museum dedicated to Cristobal Colon, in Palos de la Frontera. He actualy sailed to South America from here! On his boats there were 2 sailers from Ayamonte. True copies of his tree vessels can be visited.
* Go to the saltmines in Pozo del Camino and Isla Cristina. Stunning.
* A different trip to the Rio Tinto mines, and a ride on the train, is reminiscent of an Indiana Jones movie! Expeditions into the unspoilt countryside provide great opportunities for memorable experiences.
* A day trip to Seville on the banks of the Guadalquivir River provides a wonderful experience of Spanish architecture and history, with vibrant shopping and nightlife.
* From here you can make larger trips to Granada, Jerez, Malaga, Sevilla, Cordoba, Gibraltar,...

Golfers cannot fail to enjoy the favourable climate, suitable for year round golf, and the great variety of courses available within no more than half an hour's drive from the apartment. On the doorstep, the Isla Canela course (par 72), completed in 1994, is both challenging and enjoyable for all abilities, and is very reasonably priced for apartment guests. There is a friendly clubhouse with a restaurant and practice facilties. Combined with visits to other nearby courses both in Spain and in Portugal, this will provide a very enjoyable golfing break.
