Description from owner

The Old Brickyard Cottages sit on the banks of the River Stour in Suffolk, on the site of a former Brickyard (obviously)

It is rumoured that bricks from here were sent to London by Thames Barge (there used to be a much bigger jetty) and then on to America and were used in the construction of the White House!

As you come down the long farm track towards the river you can see all the way to Mistley on your right, Parkeston Quay dead ahead with Harwich and the cranes of Felixstowe to your left.

The mudflats, exposed as the tide ebbs away, belong to the RSPB and the whole area is a site of Special Scientific interest and a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Winter or Summer, the location is a magical place. Long walks along the river take you to far off pubs, short walks to your local. The track down can sometimes be a bit bumpy especially if there has been a lot of rain, but that is offset by the calm and privacy when you arrive. We always aim to meet you when you arrive and show you around, tell you where everything is, and let you know about the area.

Situated on the Shotley Peninsula, you are ideally poised to explore the stunning Suffolk Heritage Coast if you wish, or simply kick back and enjoy your surroundings

‘The Potting Shed’ sleeps 2, plus 1 or 2 kids. It nestles in the garden with its own greenhouse and a new conservatory, which is an amazing sun trap! This light and airy conversion offers the perfect romantic break, with your own enclosed terrace overlooking the River Stour

It lives up to its name…In the heart of the garden with a large greenhouse to one side and a large glass conservatory/ sun room to the front.

In its former life, there were two simple rooms looking out over the fields to the north and the garden to the south.

Each room of this contemporary conversion has two large roof lights, which makes it really light and sunny. One end is the double bedroom, with cupboards built in and a large antique chest of drawers. With the pitched roof in evidence, there is a platform bed, accessed by a ladder, above the bedroom door; a magic place for children.

The other half has a shower and toilet, and the kitchen. Fridge and dishwasher are both built in, while on the wall behind is an antique pine dresser. Next to the kitchen, down a couple of steps is the greenhouse, only slightly smaller than the potting shed itself! It’s home to two mature vines, all sorts of other plants and next to the kitchen steps a butler’s sink and a washing machine.

To the front, there’s a new conservatory with wooden floors like the rest of the building; A dining table with four chairs, sofa, coffee table and a wood burning stove. This has been installed so that it heats the entire building.

Outside The Potting Shed, the mature garden can be enjoyed from an old brick terrace between the side of the conservatory and the front of the greenhouse. Garden pots, a large old slate table, chairs and a barbecue make this a lovely place to enjoy summer evenings.

Through the garden and down to the river, you have your own enclosed terrace, with views across to Harwich old town, the ferry terminal and then all the way up the Stour to Mistley. To sit here and watch the Sun slide into the river is a true delight. Early risers can watch the dawn over Felixstowe. Those who are neither early nor late can use the Terrace to watch the birds feeding on the mud flats, part of the RSPB reserve.
