Description

Mas St Joseph was built in 1790 as the living quarters for the adjacent monastery and is therefore steeped in history. Much of the original monastery has now been incorporated into the peach farm, forming an additional farmhouse and various barns. The beautiful chapel is situated on the opposite side. The mas, with its spacious rooms and beautiful views across the peach orchards to the hills and mountains beyond, still retains much of the tranquil atmosphere from its past. Various items of traditional Catalan brocante are on display in the rooms and are available for purchase.?On the ground floor the entrance hallway, with exposed stonework and beams, has a large refectory table (and side board with tea and coffee making facilities), ideal for meals when guests wish to eat inside. There is a guest sitting room with open fireplace and various facilities for guest use (desk, printer, maps, regional information). French doors lead out to the Moroccan style patio/courtyard with barbecue, seating area on one side and swimming pool and further seating area on the other. Guests are welcome to choose where to take their breakfast.A 20 minute walk with magnificent views through the peach orchards leads to the market town of Ille-sur-Tet. Well maintained bicycles are also available for exploring the area.RoomsWe can offer three rooms, each with a brand new en-suite shower and toilet. Wi-fi and television (French TNT satellite channels) are available in all the rooms. The following prices include a generous continental breakfast. Full English breakfast (at an additional supplement), picnic lunches and evening meals are also available on request.Chambre d'Abbe:When the Mas was a monastery, this room was where the abbot slept (well-placed to keep an eye on the monks who slept in dormatories at either end of the house!) The original door still bears the hole through which food would have been passed to the abbot during times of prayer & meditation. The room has a lovely sunny feel to it and is ideal as quiet retreat from the world with its stunning views over the peach orchards to the tree-covered Aspres. The room contains a picturesque double bed.Chambre Canigou:The Canigou Room has lovely exposed stone work and views towards Mount Canigou (the sacred mountain of the Catalan people). There is a double bed, bunk beds and an additional pull-out single bed. It is therefore ideal for a family or a small group wishing to share a room. Chambre de Soleil:Our luxury room is the most spacious in terms of both bedroom and bathroom size and it has a larger TV screen (with the option of English or French satellite channels). It is south-facing so very light and airy, sharing the same views as the Chambre d'Abbe. It provides the option of double or twin beds. Bath robes are also supplied in this room. Please note that we are a chambres d'hotes (Bed and Breakfast) and not a self-catering gite. Our delicious breakfast is included in the price off accommodation. Table d'hote (4 course evening meals) are also available on request, prepared by Kate who has extensive experience as a chef.

Location description from owner

The Languedoc-Roussillon region

Set amidst peach orchards, with views of the foothills and distant ridges of Mount Canigou, Mas St. Joseph is a haven of peace. A delightful stroll or bike ride through the orchards takes you to the picturesque market town of Ille-sur-Tet, with its old medieval quarter of narrow streets and ancient churches. Walking a little further one crosses the Tet river to Les Orgues - the ancient geological formations for which the area is famous. In the other direction you can walk directly from the house, past cherry orchards and vineyards up into the forests of Les Apres, the range of hills to the South. For those who prefer getting into a vehicle, a half-hour drive east takes you to Perpignan and lovely Mediterranean beaches, and to the west lie the majestic Pyrenees including the impressive Mount Canigou. With Cathar country to the north and Spain just an hour's drive south, the region abounds with things to see & do.
