Description from owner

Description

Laundry cottage is a charming, two bedroom, Victorian, terraced house in a residential area on the outskirts of Ilfracombe, within walking distance (about a mile) of the town centre and famous tunnels beach. The cottage benefits from a quiet location with street parking and is only a 10 minute drive to the beach at Woolacombe. The beach is 2 miles long and great for surfing and walking at all times of year.

Ilfracombe itself is a quaint old harbour town, with many shops, restaurants and pubs, plus a few good wine bars and even a theatre and a cinema! There are lots of activities on offer all year round. You can go sea-fishing, or take a day trip along the coast or to Lundy Island from the harbour. Ideal base for visiting Exmoor or the many beaches and walks along the North Devon Coast. Also good for golf, riding, sailing and cream teas!

Come and visit Verity, Damian Hirst's controversial bronze statue on the Harbour. We think she is rather fabulous at 20m high.

The cottage is on the South West edge of town on the road to Lee, along a rural valley with the Torrs on one side and the Cairn on the other. Access to walking on the Torrs and to the local reservoirs is about 100 metres up the road, as is the bus stop. It's also only a 20 min walk into the town itself.

The cottage has a lovely homely feel and lots of personal touches as it is used by its owner on a regular basis. Bed linen & towels are included for breaks of 5 nights or more. Many holiday guests return year after year. A few of the recent comments from the guest book;

'As soon as we walked through the door we thought Wow! a real home from home. Our first time in North Devon and we have had such a good time exploring the area'

'Beautiful week, loved the cottage and felt so much at home. Great place to use as a base to explore North Devon'

'We really enjoyed our stay at the cottage. Our boys didnt want to leave. We loved the beaches at Croyde, Woolacombe and Saunton. We really appreciated the well equipped kitchen and we would love to come back'

'A great place to stay to explore North Devon. Lovely homely cottage with everything we have needed. We will be back!'

Location description from owner

The England region

North Devon Has some of the most beautiful and breathtaking scenery with lots of things to do at all times of year.

The Tarka Trail (180 miles of walking and cycling routes through stunning countryside) offers the energetic a perfect opportunity to explore the highways and byways of North Devon. You can download a range of easy-to-follow cycle route to print out and enjoy and there are several local bike rental places if you don't fancy bringing your own bikes.

Exmoor National Park also offers the walker a unique landscape to explore and the coastal towns of Lynton and Lynmouth are a short drive away. The Coastal path can be picked up in many places and walked in sections.

For total peace and quiet and a truly memorable experience there is Lundy Island, a three mile long island, 12 miles off the North Devon coast. A paradise for wildlife watchers it also has a marine reserve which you can dive off. Boats go several times a week from Ilfracombe in summer.

Golf

North Devon also has several golf courses, with the championship courses at Saunton and the Royal course at Westward Ho! Locally we have courses at Ilfracombe and Willingcott and a number of driving ranges. Plus pitch and putt and lots of crazy golf courses!

Gardens

The mild climate in North Devon means we have some wonderful gardens to visit. Marwood Gardens is a delight. Arlington Court (NT) has large gardens and the house of the Chichester family. Docton Mill in Hartland is in a delightful valley. RHS Rosemoor gardens at Great Torrington have matured into a selection of specialist areas as well as the original gardens.

Activities

For the energetic why not have a go at Quad Biking, Clay Pigeon Shooting or Horse riding.

Attractions

The area also has a wealth of family orientated attractions including, The Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park, Milky Way, The Big Sheep, Dartington Crystal, Torrington 1646, Clovelly village and Watermouth Castle.

Ilfracombe

Ilfracombe is in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, nestling snugly amongst the rugged cliffs of the majestic Atlantic coast. The beautiful and breathtaking scenery of the North Devon coast surrounds this charming natural harbour. The harbour is now home to Verity, a stunning 20ft high bronze statue by Damien Hirst, erected in October 2012.

The town has grown up around the harbour where today fishing vessels share anchorage with pleasure craft, and from where the M. S. Oldenburg regularly sails to Lundy Island, twelve miles off the coastline. The resort has been popular since the 1830’s when the Victorians started to visit the area and much of the architecture today is a reminder of the Victorian era. Many of the large, elegant buildings, have since been converted into hotels. With its array of shops, cafes and bars, Ilfracombe has plenty to do and see.

Ilfracombe is the base for many varied festivals. The town has a growing reputation for its floral displays and has been the proud winner of many awards in the “Britain in Bloom” Competition. Each year the streets are awash with colour from June to October with baskets, tubs and planters everywhere. There are several local beaches, the most sheltered being the Tunnels Beaches, transformed in recent years by new owners. Sea bathing pools and beach with access carved out under the imposing cliffs which were once frequented by Victorian holidaymakers.

There is a great local museum, small aquarium, theatre, cinema, indoor swimming pool, crazy golf and a host of other attractions nearby, including a haunted house!

“Lovely House, Great correspondance, prefect stay”

Reviewed 26 Feb 2013

Lovely house which was prefect for our long weekend in February. Travelled with our 4 year old daughter who loved the bunk beds and there was plenty of space for her to run around and play downstairs. Kitted out with everything we needed including toilettries in the bathroom. Double bedroom was very spacious and comfy. All in all a lovely relaxing stay and absolute bargin, was by far the cheapest house we could find but by no means lacked in presentation and comfort.

“Beautiful cottage”

Reviewed 16 Nov 2012

A lovely cottage, a mere ten-minute walk away from the centre of Ilfracombe, situated along a lovely peaceful valley. Tasteful decoration; all mod cons and above all, peace and quiet near a truly lovely little seaside town. Highly recommended!

“Laundry Cottage is a perfect base for us to explore Devon.”

Reviewed 16 Oct 2012

The cottage was very comfortable and cosy, and extremely well equipped with everything we needed during our stay. There are some lovely walks in and around Ilfracombe itself, and the cottage is well situated as a base for venturing further afield to explore the Devon coastline. We especially liked Lynmouth and the beach at Woollacombe. We didn't have great weather during our stay unfortunately, so it was good to return to Laundry Cottage at the end of a tiring day out to relax in the warmth of the effective central heating and fab shower! We can certainly recommend.
