The Quarry is a beautiful detached Victorian villa. Built for an Admiral in 1890, it has now been fully restored & boasts spacious, sunny rooms with magnificent views.
Situated up a long drive, and nestled into the hillside, it commands a perfect position. Quiet & private, yet near to shops, cafes & of course the beach - just a 5 min walk. The back garden leads directly onto the South West Coast path where you follow the sea to the pretty village of Lee & Woolacombe beyond.
The Quarry has featured in Conde Nast Traveller, Red Magazine, The Guardian, Real Homes, 25 Beautiful Homes, The Mail on Sunday & Grazia. Designed by an artist & a nightclub designer the interior is individual, colourful & full of stunning vintage finds.
There are 7 bedrooms - 5 double or king, 1 twin & 1 single. All are large & light with great views. Comfy beds, good duvets & pillows, quality linen & original artwork add to the appeal. Two of the bedrooms are en suite, whilst the others share the 2 enormous family bathrooms. Relax in the huge original claw top bath, perfect after a day on the beach.
Downstairs you'll find a vast proper 'cooks' kitchen, wonderfully equipped with everything you'll need for cooking up a feast. There's an AGA, a extra large Miele oven with gas hob, as well as everything else you would expect. The kitchen has a seating area for 6, it also opens out onto a sunny terrace which in turn leads to the stunning original Vine Room. Relax in here amongst the vines & nectarine tree, or sit on the terrace (seating for 12, also large BBQ) looking out over Ilfracombe towards the sea.
The magnificent 36ft sitting room / dining room / library has 2 sets of French doors leading onto the seaview terrace. This is perfect for kids as its completely enclosed. There's a table with 6 chairs, a decked area, small lawn & a handmade wendy house.
Inside the dining table seats up to 14, with sofas & chairs to seat 11 in the sitting room. Warm up by the log fire (logs &kindling supplied) after a windy walk on the cliffs. The library is full of great books to read in a deckchair. There's a selection of DVDs, games & kids toys. We have a full sky package for rainy days, and WIFI.
The 1/2 acre gardens are full of spots to hide away with a book. They are terraced & great for older kids to explore.
The Quarry has a wonderfully warm atmosphere, & guests have enjoyed some memorable stays. Here's a few of the most popular reasons to visit:

The Devon region
Ilfracombe is in North Devon - a beautiful & unspoilt part of the South West. North Devon is famous for its stunning golden sand beaches & clear surf - such as the 3 miles of beach at Woolacombe Bay, just a 10 min drive from The Quarry. Book a surf lesson, or just hire some equipment. There's also Croyde bay & Saunton Sands - both boasting fine sand & turquoise seas.
At the end of the road, just a 5 min walk from the house, you'll find Tunnels Beaches. This is a privately owned beach (you pay a small entrance fee) with a large Victorian tidal pool hewn from the rocks, stylish cafe, beach loungers to hire & many, many rock pools to discover. The entrance is via a tunnel carved through the cliffs . The Blue Flag beach is a fascinating place to visit, & spend a day lazing in the sun.
However there is so much more than just wonderful beaches, this area boasts many diverse experiences, all in close proximity to The Quarry. Explore the vast expanses of moorland on Exmoor, and its craggy & dramatic coastline. Perfect for walking or horse riding Exmoor is also blessed with idyllic traditional villages & picturesque pubs.
Ilfracombe has a busy working harbour, with trawlers galore. Experience a fishing trip out to sea, kayak the fascinating coastline, take a trip further afield to Lundy Island, or just enjoy a delicious crab sandwich & glass of wine at the fishmongers on the harbour.
The Quarry backs directly onto the South West coast path, the incredible 630 mile pathway which meanders along the cliffs from Minehead in Somerset to Poole in Dorset. So just out the back gate you will encounter perfect walking territory. Stroll to Lee for a pub lunch, or take a whole day to reach Woolacombe & Croyde.
Ilfracombe remains an unspoilt Victorian seaside town. The surrounding landscape is dramatic & inspiring - huge cliffs & hills sweeping down to the sea. We love the town for its quirkiness. So many other places on the coast have become identikit towns - the same shops and restaurants. Ilfracombe is resolutely independent & offers a wonderful local butcher, bakers, veg suppliers & two great delis. Each year the town comes alive with Ilfracombe Art Week, Victorian Week, The Birdman festival & many more events.
You will find some magnificent restaurants in the harbour & Fore Street (the oldest street in Ilfracombe), just a 15 min walk from The Quarry. Damien Hirst, the celebrated artist, lives in the town & owns a wonderful restaurant & bar filled with his artwork. Enjoy freshly grilled seafood at Cafe Bar Espresso, highly acclaimed Modern British dishes at La Gendamerie or a wholesome hearty homecooked meal at The Olive Room. My favourite is the Sri Lankan curry served on Barricane Beach, Woolacombe - bring your own wine & a rug & watch the sunset whilst eating a homemade curry - perfect!
The Quarry has the best of both worlds. Walking distance of the picturesque harbour with its cafes, restaurants, boat trips & freshly caught seafood; but also a garden that leads onto the wild cliffs & secret beaches found on the SW coastal path.
