The Basque Country region

Rural tourism is one of the strongest points in the Basque Country. In spite of

the growing three capitals and the industrialization of some villages and towns, most of the autonomous community has a marked rural identity. This feature is always present in the whole territory, which is historically linked to the worlds of cattle

raising, grazing, and agriculture. The Basque climate, with warm temperatures throughout the year and a moderate rainfall, has contributed to model a green and

pleasant landscape for our eyes.

Bilbao, San Sebastián, and Vitoria. One stands out due to its reinvention, the second

for its beauty, and the last one for its quality

of life. Three cities, three different faces, and some common points: the pleasure for

progress, a pleasant urban planning, and a calendar packed with cultural events. These

are the three big cities in the Basque Country.

With more than 250 kilometres of coast and fifty beaches, the Basque Country

is one of the leading summer destinations. The Basque Coast is characterised by a

careful and pleasant profile, in tune with nature and without urban stridencies. All this is revealed in its wide range of beaches, made up of sand areas of all types and conditions.

Ibarrangelu

URDAIBAI Nature Biosphere

The biosphere reserve that surrounds the estuary of Gernika and the coastal region

of Lea-Artibai are located in a route that hides many attractive elements and which

is a continuation of the previous route. Wewill start off in Gernika , where we will take the BI-638 road. Before arriving to the urban quarter of Kortezubi, but already within its communal area, we will take a diversion that will lead us to Santimamiñe caves. Almost a hundred painted animal figures are preserved on the walls of the cave from the Middle Magdalenian Period (from 14.000 to 9.000 BC), From the mouth of the cave we will be able to carry out a trip on foot to the nearby Oma forest 3, a pine grove that, thanks to the colours that Agustín Ibarrola has added to the trunks, has been turned into an Animated Forest. We will retake the car andthe BI-638 to go across Kortezubi, with its Santiago church, and Gautegiz Arteaga. There, the Arteaga castle is located, originally from the fifteenth century and then reconstructed in the nineteenth century to the taste of Eugenia de Montijo, a descendant of the saga and empress of France.

Through the BI-3237, we will go across Ibarralangelu and we will see the sea in Elantxobe, whose houses literally hang from the mountain in a very steep littoral.

Going along the coast towards the east side, we will go across Ea and we will stop in Lekeitio. Isabel II, the Queen, has spent her summer holidays in this beautiful village that faces the nearby San Nicolás Island. The Santa María basilica, from the latest gothic period, is regarded as national monument.

Going across the Urdaibai biosphere reserve,we will get to Gernika-Lumo, a

villa that stands for Basque liberties and peace, since the bombardment it suffered

in 1937. Visiting its powerful market or meditating in its Peace Museum are some

of the activities one can carry out in Gernika-Lumo, different but they can also go

well together. By the beautiful Park of the Villages of Europe, which includes sculptures by Chillida and Moore, there is the Assembly House of Gernika, built up in the nineteenth century, and the mythical tree under which Assemblies used to gather.
