It has a queen bed in the main bedroom, a double bunk bed with two more single beds, accommodating seven people. The gas heating is cosy in winter and fans cool the rooms in summer. Lyrebird Cottage is close to bushwalks through huge Blue Gums and native plant life. A walk under the canopy to Crystal Pool is energising and a swim cools you down in summer. Or just climb over the rocks and find a spot to relax and watch life in the pool.

There is a tennis court for more energetic guests and a covered barbecue area attached to the tennis courts.

Location description from owner

The New South Wales region

The Hunter Region is vast. Lyrebird Cottage is located in Barrington Wilderness Cottages in Barrington National Park which is World Heritage listed. The Hunter region is renowned for wineries and its wine festivals. Closer to Dungog in Gresford and Clarencetown you find old style hotels, cafes and restaurants. The Cock Fighter Hotel is a reminder of past times.

Dungog is noted for Art and Culture such as Rodeos and festivals and a very popular Art Festival in September. The festival and Rodeo in November is fun for the whole family. The Barrington Tops roads give access to view waterfalls of the Williams and Allyn Rivers. Bushwalks and camping are popular, especially along the Allyn River. Chichester Dam is a great location for picnics.

There are cafes, restaurants and an interesting variety of shops in the suburbs of the Hunter Valley. Tourism has replaced industry in the Dungog, Barrington Tops, Gloucester areas of the larger Hunter Valley region.

Hunter Valley

Barrington National Park is a World Heritage Listed National Park. The Wilderness Cottages and Lyrebird Cottage are located just inside the National Park at the very end of Salisbury Road, via DUNGOG. Along each side of Salisbury Road are small farms which were once Dairy Farms. Logging was one of the primary industries of the area. Small churches no longer in use as churches, dot the landscape. Two very small cemeteries are evidence of farming families who go back more than one hundred years.

The Park itself has many wonderful walks from the front door of the cottage. There is the one to Rocky Crossing that is very popular. In summer you can have a swim in the many small waterholes on the way up and back. Or you can be 'dropped by car' at Rocky Crossing and just walk back. Crystal Pool is a ten minute walk from the cottage. It's a great way to cool down in summer, but a little too cold for swimming in winter.

For artists and writers, the tranquillity of the area can be stimulating. In the cottage itself are original paintings, mostly landscapes from around the Australia and New Zealand region to whet the appetite of the artist.

The abundant (but sometimes shy) wildlife is a drawcard. The constant chatter of rosellas, the presence of kookaburras and their weird sounds, the continual fossicking of the 'resident' lyrebird in the backyard ...all are fascinating to watch and to communicate with them is a rare experience in today's world, especially for the visitor from the city.

“The best getaway I've had in years”

Reviewed 13 May 2014

The house was very clean and tidy and very pleasant to stay in. The immediate surroundings were quiet and peaceful with plenty to see when you go for a bush walk. The swimming hole was very picturesque. Also the birds woudl come up and rest on the balcony rail only a few cwntimetres away from you. Great plcae for taking photos of flora and fauna. A grate and relaxing few days away.

Owner's reply: It was good to have you stay at our cottage and great that you enjoyed the peacefulness of the bush. We now have a 'resident' lyrebird which comes to fossick in the back garden each day. The rosellas and king parrots keep visitors entertained, while the kookaburras act as 'alarm clocks, in the early morning.
