Rooks' Retreat is a cottage full of character, just 3 miles from historic Pembroke, 7 from lively Tenby and a 5 min drive from Lamphey, with its shop, pubs, restaurants and petrol station. The car park can accommodate up to 3 cars and the fully enclosed rear lawn, with patio area, BBQ and garden furniture, backs onto the village green; an ideal children's play area.

The pub at Freshwater East is only 1 mile, or a 10 min drive, complete with views of the long sandy bay, and the award winning Barafundle bay is five miles. It is an ideal walking & touring base for the coastal footpath, the county's finest beaches, castles and theme parks.

The inside of the cottage is well equipped, with everything you should need for a real home from home experience. Sleeping a maximum of 5 we have three bedrooms: one double en-suite downstairs, one king size en-suite upstairs, one twin upstairs with a double and single and a games room- it is friendly to both toddlers and the elderly. There are also, DVDs, CDs, books, Xbox and Freeview TV for your use.

Getting around

Hodgeston is just a mile from the nearest railway station at Lamphey. Bus stop to Tenby, Pembroke and further afield is just a couple of minutes walk away. You can also access the Coastal Cruiser bus - a hop on/ hop off bus that will take you around the coast. Check our own web site for a link.

Spent a weekend with family here in November, 4 of us and 1 dog. Cottage we perfect for us and with ample provision in terms of towels, bedding, crockery etc. Nicely situated away in quit spot, but easily accessible to all local beaches. We loved it and would definitely book again

Cottage in lovely location, very central for touring Pembrokeshire, gorgeous beaches. Beds very comfy, bedroom furniture cheap & needs replacing. Really accommodation only suitable for 4 Adults, downstairs very small. Not clearly advertised that only upstairs bathroom was en-suite, family shower room was downstairs. On arrival gardens were overgrown & untended which had been mentioned on a previous review, however after a couple of messages to owner this was rectified after a few days & made a massive difference. Also previously mentioned was the bbq was going to be replaced, this hadn’t happened either. Towels were provided as advertised however 3 out of the 5 were hand towels, these were eventually replaced on the Thursday night as we were leaving on the Saturday morning. Cleanliness, I had to clean the outside kitchen cupboards, not a filthy cottage but not particularly clean, room for improvement. We have stayed in a lot of cottages averaging 3 per year & unfortunately this comes way down our list, not quite the worst but for the money not worth it. Such a shame as I did try & get things rectified more than once.

“Great house for a family holiday”

Our 8th visit to Rooks Retreat, and we have never been disappointed. Plenty of space for a family of 6, and the house has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The sandy beaches within easy distance are superb, and include dunes, rock pools, caves and enough space to play ball games. Thank you Paul for everything. Sue, John, and family.

“Not quite up to standard”

My stay got off to a bad start due to the ‘iron man’ competition the house hadn’t bern cleaned, so it was cleaned after I arrived. The cold evenings were not pleasant as the heating… More

Owner's reply: The roads leading to Rooks Retreat had been closed during the annual Welsh Iron man competition, so the cleaners could not access the cottage in time, despite several attempts to gain access. The cleaners reported a very positive response from the guests, after they had cleaned, with no concerns raised. The heating had been accidentally turned off prior to guest arrival, but this was not reported until departure, so we were unable to immediately resolve the issue. A photograph of the heating controls has now been added to the guest handbook and instructions left with the cleaner to ensure that it is functioning, before arrival of the guests. The lawns are mown weekly and the weeding, whilst scheduled, was not completed in time due to the poor weather. The sale of the cottage has no bearing on cottage quality, we implement yearly improvements, testament to the decade of year on year repeat bookings. We thank you for your custom and hope that the issues raised did not detract you from your stay in our wonderful part of Pembrokeshire.

We are pleased that you found the location of the property to your liking, peaceful and in a great location with a great layout, especially the downstairs en-suite with comfortable beds. With reference to the reported issues, the dishwasher outlet had become detached, despite being in place for a number of years, but was fixed by the cleaner, once it had been reported. The lawns are mown weekly and the weeding, whilst scheduled, was not completed in time for your stay due to the poor weather. Light bulbs and smoke alarm batteries were replaced, as soon as we had been notified: we will now include a weekly check, to ensure that they can be replaced promptly when required. We thank you for your custom and hope that the issues raised did not detract you from your stay in our wonderful part of Pembrokeshire.
