There are many historic houses and landscaped gardens in the area including Petworth House and Deer Gardens, Cowdray ruin and park, Uppark House and Garden at Petersfield, Jane Austin's house near Alton and many more. If you are a fan of Downtown Abbey you can visit the Highclere country estate near Newbury where it was filmed. There is also a beautiful long sandy beach at West Wittering. Chessington Theme Park and Thorpe Park are not too far for a busy day out; Guildford has an outdoor lido and indoor leisure pool which includes slides and a wave pool. Hampton Court is easily accessible by road and a 45 minute ride by train from Haslemere will get you into central London. If you have not visited the UNESCO site of Stonehenge then you must, again it is about 60 minutes by car with the cathedral town of Salisbury nearby.

Hindhead

Miles and Miles of walking trails on your doorstep
Wildlife is abundant; you will hear the woodpecker by day, the owl by night and while walking in the thousands of acres of National Trust parkland and woodland you will encounter young deer in the woods as well as highland cattle and wild ponies grazing on the heathland.

Heathers is located in Hindhead, a friendly village on the Surrey, Hampshire border on the northern edge of the South Downs, and at the heart of over a thousand acres of National Trust parkland. With miles of glorious walks, exhilarating mountain bike rides and wonderfully picturesque horse riding treks there is something to enjoy for all of the family. The Golden Valley, the Devil's Punchbowl, Frensham Ponds, the Bourne and Tilford Woods, and the Devil's Jump are just a few of the areas of outstanding natural beauty on your doorstep.

For the golfing enthusiast the championship qualifier course, Hindhead Golf Club, and the challenging Hankley Common Golf Club (Tilford) are both within just a ten minute drive

In Victoian times George Bernard Shaw and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle were two famous local residents, and it is said the latter wrote The Hound of the Baskervilles after walking the Devil's Punchbowl. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's house, 'Undershaw' is situated on the A333 towards the middle of Hindhead.

The Devil's Punchbowl in Hindhead is a spectacular area of woodland and natural heathland and was one of the first purchases made by the newly created National Trust in around 1895. The Devils Punchbowl was home to the famous 'Broom Squires'; people who farmed and lived on the heath with commoners' entitlement to gather heather and birch to make besom brooms. Some of their cottages were built into the banks of the Punchbowl itself, and many folk spent their entire lives within Punchbowl.
