Hello from Highlands, North Carolina! We would be happy to talk you about accommodations for your visit to the mountains! After more than three decades of operating a B&B in Highlands, we can also help with lots of other information including the best restaurants, hiking trails, travel directions, entertainment options, and many other things. Nestled on two beautiful, secluded acres located one-half mile from Main Street next to Colonial Pines Inn Bed and Breakfast at 541 Hickory Street, the Guest House Apartment has a cozy cabin-like feeling and is colorfully furnished with knotty pine, country french fabrics, braided rugs, and folk art.

From convenient off-street parking, walk up the stairs to the deck and enter the upper level of the guest house which has a bedroom with queen bed, a second bedroom with two twins, one bath with tub & shower, and efficiency kitchen, making this a perfect hideaway for a small family or a couple wanting more than just a room. In a quiet neighborhood of large old homes, the windows look out in all four directions on lawns, large oaks, maples, and rhododendron which provide a colorful show in all seasons. A small "Great Room" features Cable TV/DVD, a leather love seat, rocking chair, dining table with ladder back chairs, and an efficiency kitchen with a little "retro" oven, a microwave, medium-sized refrigerator, coffee pot and toaster, and everything needed for light cooking.

On the lower level, there is an optional third bedroom with king bed, bath with shower, and Cable TV. This room can be rented as a separate add-on when extra space is needed at a reasonable nightly rate. Please call for a special quote on the two units based on length of stay & number of guests. Neither space includes breakfast at Colonial Pines Inn, but at times breakfast can be purchased separately if the Inn is not at capacity - it doesn't hurt to ask! The lower level room is called (tongue-in-cheek)" The Bargain Basement." It was named after the Atlanta Rich's Department Store's "Bargain Basement" which was actually under the street in downtown Atlanta and was a true jumble sale in the days before everything was always on sale. Anyone remember that?

Up on a quiet, green, magical hillside, you will enjoy hummingbirds, songbirds, pine squirrels, chipmunks and butterflies from the deck -not to mention the occasional bear! Leave your car at the cottage and walk the half mile to Main Street shopping & dining down a quiet sidewalk on 5th Street, walk 1/4 mile to the Nature Center's back entrance by the lake, or walk one block to the beginning of the newly established Kelsey Trail leading up Big Bear Pen Mountain to see the famous view of Whiteside Mountain looking like the head and shoulders of a gorilla!! The Performing Arts Center on Chestnut is located one half block down the hill and features year-round music and theater events. Wild Thyme Gourmet and SweeTreats, two of Highlands' most popular cafes, are only one quarter mile away. The Bascom, a premiere visual arts complex with the second oldest covered bridge in the country, is one mile away. Away from the hustle and bustle of Main Street, but close to everything, there is no better location from which to enjoy all that this little town has to offer!

Maps, directions, hiking guides, restaurant menus, and event calendars are available next door at Colonial Pines Inn where Donna & Chris Alley, innkeeper/owners since 1984, live on the property and are always available to answer questions, provide information, or help plan your special day in Highlands

Please note that this 500 sq ft (plus deck) cottage is best for a maximum of three adults or two adults plus two small children. A car is necessary to visit some hiking trails & waterfalls. Walking around town is highly recommended. Town limits are 1.5 X 1.5 miles so everything is easily accessible.
