Description from owner

Description

This lovely Lakeland cottage with its wood burning stove, old oak beams, and other period features was built onto High Swinside Farmhouse back in the 1800s. There are three holiday cottages here sharing an idyllic hillside location overlooking the peaceful Vale of Lorton - one of the Lake Districts hidden gems. The panoramic views from the shared garden include Melbreak beyond Crummock Water right round to the misty Scottish mountains in the north. The walking is excellent and varied from gentle lake shore paths to the high Grasmoor and Buttermere fells, while in nearby Whinlatter Forest Park there is great mountain biking to be had... In the garden you will find peaceful benches for enjoying the views, hammocks, a wooden hot tub, and even a special enclosed area where dogs can run free in safety (well-behaved dogs are welcome). Lorton Village shop and pub are 15-20 mins walk away. Keswick 8 miles. Cockermouth 6 miles. High Swinside Cottage is well-equipped and comfortable, with a charm

Location description from owner

The England region

The Lorton valley - one of the most peaceful corners of the Lake District - is part of the Vale of Lorton which stretches from Honister Pass to Cockermouth. High Swinside has an idyllic hillside setting overlooking the Lorton valley. High Lorton village with its organic village shop is 20 mins walk away by footpath. The dog-friendly Wheatsheaf pub in Low Lorton is 10 mins further on.

Lorton village also has a lovely old church, and a 1000 year old yew tree under which George Fox who founded the Quakers once preached. There are wonderful walks all around and at all levels, many of them straight from the door or from a nearby car park.

Lorton

Further up the Vale lie the 3 beautiful lakes of Loweswater, Crummock Water, and Buttermere, all with lake shore paths and rowing boats that can be hired for exploring or fishing. At the head of the Vale lies the Honister Pass where climbing, via ferrata adventures, and mine tours are all on offer. In the other direction you'll find the pretty Georgian town of Cockermouth with its many excellent independent shops, Wordsworth House (NT), Jennings Brewery, an 18 hole golf course, and more. The Solway coast lies beyond Cockermouth to the north with views of Scotland, while towards Keswick is the Whinlatter Forest Park offering mountain biking, 'Go Ape' experiences, osprey viewing, and excellent adventure play for younger children...
