Vieil Hesdin, as its name implies, was the site of the old Hesdin before it was sacked by the Spanish in 1553. Hesdin was rebuilt at its present site, but today Vieil Hesdin remains a pretty, peaceful village situated on the banks of the river Canche, just a short drive from Hesdin. There is an ancient convent not far from the house and most of the village (including our house) is in a conservation area. Plenty of quiet roads and tracks for cycling or walking along the river or in the nearby woods.

Location description from owner

The Nord-Pas-de-Calais region

Nord Pas de Calais is a region much appreciated by the Brits and other northern Europeans for its excellent beaches, its history, its cuisine and of course shopping. Le Pays des 7 Vallees is a tourist area within this region having the old market town of Hesdin at its heart. Situated at the confluence of the rivers Canche and Ternoise Hesdin has an impressive central 'Grande Place' dominated by the 16th century town hall. Market day is Thursday, but the boutiques, restaurants and bars, its historic church and buildings, and its status as a 3 star 'ville fleuri' (flowered town) make it a town pleasant to visit on any day. North of Hesdin is the 'Foret d'Hesdin' extending to over 1000 hectares. 15 km of forest roads and 5 km of one of the national Grande Randonnée footpaths make it ideal for walking, cycling and picnics.

Vieil Hesdin, as its name implies, was the site of the old Hesdin before it was sacked by the Spanish in 1553. There is an ancient convent not far from the house and most of the village (including our house) is in a conservation area. Plenty of quiet roads and tracks for cycling or walking along the river or in the nearby woods. There is so much to do that it is only possible to give a brief summary. Agincourt with its new visitors centre is about 12 km away, and the battlefields of the Somme are within easy reach, as is La Coupole, constructed in 1943 and now a history centre with presentations on the occupation of Northern France.

“Peace and Tranquility”

Reviewed 11 Jul 2016

This is the second time we have stayed at Maison St. Collette. I had a week on my own, pure joy, and was then joined by my son and his P.A. The property is spacious and ideal for my son, who is a full time wheelchair user, it allows him total independence both inside and outside the property. The new shower, with seat, is ideal as he has not real balance, and having a bath also is great for him to relax when he has muscle spasms. For me, the peace of this property is an ideal setting from the continual hubbub of London and hospitals. It has everything you need and more. Hudson has some good restaurants, supermarkets, local bakeriers (the one opposite La Choppe is superb) and butchers. L'Allouette on the main road serves good food open Wed and Sun Lunch, and Friday and Saturday evening only. La Belle Epoque and La Garenne are also well worth a visit. The owner's are extremely helpful and I would highly recommend this property. We will no doubt stay here again, just trying to work out my son's timetable. Thank you so much Janet and Iain.

Thank you Marlene - it was a pleasure to welcome you and your son to our house again. Glad your stay was enjoyable, and look forward to your next visit!

“Absolute heaven - peace and tranquility”

Reviewed 3 Jul 2013

What a find - the Maison St Colette is situated in the most wonderful countryside setting nestled amongst trees and pastures in the beautiful 7 valleys area. The house itself is very comfortable and spacious and so practical for families or friends visiting as it has two good size bathrooms. Every possible convenience needed is there, marvellous kitchen with a lovely large rustic country dining table in the adjoining dining room with direct access to the gardens. The lounge is spacious but cosy again with direct access to the front and back gardens - the covered parking was such a bonus with the added security of the gates to the courtyard though i'm sure that the village is one where you could leave the front door open without any concern ! Plenty of pretty towns and villages to visit so close by, endless miles of quiet roads and tracks for walks, beaches only 30 minutes away and the practicality of several supermarkets ,shops and restaurants only a 5 minute drive away in the pretty town of Hesdin...all in all, the perfect get away for long or short breaks and would not hesitate to recommend the property to anyone, we hope to go back in the near future.

“fantastic property, comfortable, spacious and convenient”

So pleased we decided to stay here, it was just what we needed. Plenty of space for the dogs, brilliant location and nice and peaceful too. Will definitely be back when it's next possible, and will thoroughly recommend house to anybody else

“An ideal holiday for all.”

This home is to be highly recommended. In terms of comfort and spaciousness, both inside and outside and of its setting and facilities it must rank among the best available. Real value for money.

“Ideal cottage and location for peaceful break in the countryside”

Reviewed 3 Nov 2012

A very well equipped cottage with excellent facilities throughout, including a large enclosed and secluded courtyard and garden, fully secure and suitable for children and pets. The owner has clearly made an effort to the meet the needs and expectations of her guests. Vieil Hesdin is a quiet pretty village, with good country walks close by, and is within a few minutes' drive of Hesdin town, with supermarkets, restaurants (La Belle Époque probably the best locally, friendly staff and decent food), English speaking vets and a weekly market. The property and location are ideal for short breaks or longer holidays, offering peace and quiet in a typical French rural environment, and an easy and short (less than 90 mins) drive from Calais.
