Location description from owner

The Western Cape region

In Hermanus there is only one “bayview" and that is THE Bayview

Apartments are scarcely available and rarely come on the market

We offer you what we believe to be one of the best; elegantly decorated and in peach-perfect position for 2 couples to enjoy the splendours and unique delights of the Overberg area

Hermanus

Cuisine

The Western Cape has been a global foodie destination for several decades. Famed for fusing the experience and creativity of international chefs with richly varied, endemic provenanced ingredients.  The Hermanus area elides terroir and climate unique wines, cheese, honey, truffles, poultry  Wild Oysters, Western Rock Lobsters, Game venison, citrus, berries and orchards. Often infused with the unique fragrance of the endemic fynbos herbs such as Buchu, Honey Bush and Rooibos.

Whether its sublime views from; Heaven. Grootbos, Bientang’s Cave and Harbour rock or Exquisite Starred Cuisine,, Springfontein Eats, the Marine Hotel, the Restaurant,  Or homely rural fare; Moggs Country Kitchen, Havercroft’s,Mariana’s, the Royal Oke, Dassiesfontein. The majority of local vineyards as well as rate Klein Rivier Cheese farm also offer wine pairings with food that offer exceptional value and quality many also offer family ready made picnic baskets to complement their enological output. Creation and Gabrielskloof are great examples of this.

Golf

27-hole Hermanus Golf club, just across the road is rated as one of the top 10 in South Africa and is perennially popular with locals and visitors. Booking green time can be done prior to travel in advance is strongly recommended to avoid disappointment on arrival

Wines

The Overberg Wine route is rapidly approaching the established centres of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschoek as one of SA’s key wine destinations, Hemel en Aarde valley boasts Newton Johnson, Creation, Hamilton Russell , Hermanuspietersfontein and Gabrielskloof. Then to the east, Stanford and Elgin valleys home to Lomond, Stanford Hills, Raka and Springfontein. Adjacent Elim Valley hosts Black Oystercatcher, Jean Daneel, The Berrio and Quoin Rock. Most Vineyards have attached restaurants of typically high quality and reputation to compliment their wine tastings. The unique terroir and cooler, slower grape maturation creates a richly varied and quite different wine tasting experience enabled by some of the finest growers and vintners in the country

Birdlife

Sugarbirds, Sunbirds, Whydahs, Flycatchers and Weaverbirds are as common as sparrows in the apartment’s gardens leading to the pool area. They evolved symbiotically with the indigenous Proteas and Ericas are pretty much the iconic ticks of the Oberberg. in addition to Hermanus's indigenous fymbos mountain species we offer to littoral shores , Black Oystercatchers, whimbrels, penguins, plovers and pelagic seabirds; Terns and petrels, farmland; blue cranes, francolins and diurnal raptors, migratory storks and cranes. An earnest and lucky birdwatcher ought to be able to achieve more than 150 species in a fortnight.

Ernie’s dawn and sunset river cruise on the Stanford lagoon is a popular induction to the wetland species; Gallinules, fish eagles, Gymnogene and ospreys, and monthly offshore cruises to view the oceanic pelagics; Petrels, albatrosses etc are increasingly well supported

Fynbos

The Cape  is the smallest and most densely speciated Floral Kingdom in the World. A botanical wonderland where geographical isolation for millions of years, ancient rock, extremely varied soil and climate have produced an endemic speciation like no other. Dozens of endemic species have been cultivated and are familiar in your gardens. Several excellent nature reserves are well laid out for walkers of every ability and in some Oveberg locations you’ll be able to spot literally hundreds of different species within a 10 minute stroll. Fernkloof reserve and Rotary Drive peak are just 5 minutes from the apartment but also worth visiting are Grootbos Eco Reserve, Harold Porter Botanical gardens, Walker Bay reserve, Caledon botanical gardens. A day-trip pilgrimage to Kirstenbosch (Cape Town) "the university of botany" is also pretty much compulsory

Whales & Sharks

The undisputed shore-based whale watching capital of the World, Hermanus’s Walker Bay hosts many hundreds of Southern Right Whales every Spring as they migrate from Antarctic feeding grounds to calve, breed and play. During the peak season (May-Nov) you’ll be ably to watch dozens of whales from the window of the apparent breaching, lobbing tail-sailing and training their calves in the safe waters of the Marine reserve. Migrating Humpbacks, resident Bryde’s whales as well as huge pods of Bottle-nosed dolphins are also frequently seen from the window and once or twice a year we have seen Killer whales from the window.

Gansbaai, 20km down the road, is for Great White Sharks what Hermanus is to whales - a fur seal breeding colony on the 2 islets just offshore creates a natural “feeding channel” where large quantities of these huge migratory sharks gather to hunt each year. Shark viewing is from the boat or in lowered cages and trips are dependant upon the turbidity of the water. A real ‘lifer” experience and extremely educational on the ecology of this magnificent and misunderstood species.

Arts & Crafts

The undisputed charms of the Overberg area is a honey-pot for creatively sensitive sorts from all over the World. Many writers, painters, sculptors and musicians have moved here to set up ateliers or retired here creating a contemporary creative crucible that transcends the street art mask/bead/batik available elsewhere across Africa

Hermanus art galleries, bookshops and crafts boutiques are almost as commonplace as estate agents in the high street and many great names can be visited in their workshops and studios if you know where to ask. Creative fairs of different disciplines occur most months and the Friday evening Arts Meander through Hermanus’ galleries (liberally lubricated with local wine sampling) are a popular way to get to know local craftspeople as well as more well-known artists.
