Location description from owner

The England region

Henley on Thames is in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty known as the Chilterns. Whilst being close to London, it is nestled among beech-wooded hills that are carpeted with bluebells in the spring. The town is located on of one of the most beautiful stretches of the Thames and is home to the world famous Royal Regatta which attracts entrants from around the world.

Evidence of the history of the Chilterns stretching back to pre-Roman times can be found throughout the region. Oliver Cromwell garrisoned Phyllis Court during the English Civil War and the wall built from the rubble of the old manor house exists to this day. The beech woods were very important to the furniture making business in the Chilterns and millions of tent pegs were fashioned for use by the military during the world wars.

Many of the centuries old, brick and flint cottages found in the woods today were former 'bodgers' cottages built by the men who turned the beech wood into decorative legs and spindles used in chair making.

For culture lovers historic Oxford , the City of Dreaming Spires has many delights and can easily be reached in less than an hour. Likewise London and the attractions of Royal Windsor with nearby Legoland.

There are various National Trust properties in the area including Grey Court, Stonor House, Nuffield Place, Basildon Park, West Wycombe and Hughenden Manor. For garden lovers there are the beautiful gardens of Cliveden, Dorneywood and Waterperry.

One of Henley's most memorable sights for nature lovers are the red kites that wheel over the town and the Studio! We also get buzzards, tawny owls, tree creepers, woodpeckers and other many other species.

Apart from the walks straight into open country from the Studio, Warburg Nature Reserve, Watlington Hill, the Stonor Valley and the Thames itself are great places to explore. With all this rich history and scenery it is perhaps not surprising that the area is often used for film and television shows including the Vicar of Dibley - filmed at nearby Turville and Midsomer Murders filmed at many locations around Henley and in the Chilterns. If Midsomer Murders is your passion, then please visit the Midsomer website and plan your itinerary before you visit.

Henley-on-Thames

Founded in the 12th century, Henley on Thames is the epitome of an English country town. The town sits comfortably by the river overlooked by beautiful Chiltern landscape of wooded hills and green fields. Entering the town across the 18th Century bridge, the long reach of the Regatta course is seen to the right and the town directly ahead.

Henley has been my home for 20 years, yet whenever I return from a trip away and cross the bridge I still feel that surge of holiday excitement!

Just across the bridge is the very heart of Georgian Henley with its historic church of St. Mary, the town hall and vibrant market square thronged with busy stall-holders and shoppers on market days. The town has many varied shops, boutiques, galleries, antiques emporia, cafés and fine riverside pubs to idle time away in.

Take to the river on a cruise, by motor launch or for the more energetic by rowing boat or canoe. The River and Rowing Museum alongside Mill Meadows is unique and well worth a visit. What's more, you will be greeted by the statues of Olympians, Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Matthew Pinsent. The annual Royal Regatta in early July attracts some of the world´s finest rowers. The town buzzes with activity for the week drawing crowds from afar to witness this quintessential summer event. Pimms and champagne are the drinks of choice for spectators!

Following on is the Henley Festival of Music and the Arts which features some of the world´s top entertainers performing on a floating stage in front of a black tie audience. As well as music for all tastes there are comedy shows, roving performance art and cuisine of the highest order. The lawns includes exhibitions of art and sculpture against a backdrop of the river and town. Watching and listening to some of the world's best artists perform on a balmy summer evening with the Thames gently flowing by, is truly incomparable.

Henley also attracts golfers to its local courses, is home to the nationally known Henley Hawks rugby club and to successful cricket and football clubs as well as a privately-owned polo ground.

There are other festivals and events throughout much of the year. These include: The Literary Festival - 5 days of stimulating talks by renowned public figures. The Rewind Festival - 2 days of 80's music with a happy, carnival atmosphere & the summer concert at Stonor Park - top artistes in a spectacular setting, Garsington Opera on the Wormsley Estate, Henley Women's Regatta –one of the main events for women's rowing, particularly for colleges and universities. The Thames Traditional Boat Rally – a glorious weekend of traditional boats and boating. There are countless good pubs in the area, from village locals to gastro-pubs of the highest quality, in fantastic locations. Let me update you with the best of them when you get here. The names of Tom Kerridge, Anthony Worrall-Thompson, Adam Simmonds and Paul Clerehugh should whet the appetite for starters!

For all the latest on events in the area, do visit the southernoxfordshire website to plan ahead of your visit.

For those that prefer to do rather than watch:

GOLF - 3 courses within 3 square miles with Badgemore Park, one minute away by car.

CYCLING - There is great off-road mountain biking throughout the region and the new Chilterns Cycleway is a 170 mile route taking in the best of the Chilterns scenery on mainly quiet roads. Some fantastic circular all terrain rides take in great scenery, history and country pubs utilising the Ridgeway and the Swan's Way for example. Bikes can be hired in Henley.

WALKING - The Thames Path, The Ridgeway Path, The Chiltern Way and The Oxfordshire Way all pass through or close to Henley on Thames.

ON THE RIVER – pleasure cruises run from Henley or you can hire motor or rowing boats. Canoes can also be hired and can be used for day or longer overnight trips.

ON SKIS – yes really! When the conditions are right for touring (a rare event), a weekend in the Chilterns is a magical experience. Believe me, I've done it.

There is plenty more to see and do in and around Henley on Thames. I can help you with more information should you need it.

This is your holiday and I want it to be memorable for you. I will do all that is possible to make your stay in Henley an experience that you would wish to repeat.

“Perfect in every way”

Reviewed 29 Jun 2014

Completely exceeded expectations. Location, comfort, hosts-wonderful. Surrounded by beautiful gardens and woods, it gave you the feeling that you were in the country. However, it was just a short 10 minute walk to the beautiful village of Henley on Thames. We also had the privilege of being there when the baby chics hatched. That was beautiful. I must mention that the bed was extremely comfortable--just watch your head if you happen to be tall like my husband!!!!!! Thank you Simon & Kate. If ever we have the pleasure of visiting this part of the U.K. again (we are from Australia) we will certainly be staying at The Studio at Westfield House.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your super review of the Studio and grounds. We were so pleased you were able to witness the wonder of baby chicks hatching too.

“Perfect Bijou Retreat”

Reviewed 9 Feb 2013

We had a most relaxing few days at The Studio which is well equipped, comfortable and very convenient for the centre of town. The property owner was more than helpful. Without doubt, we will be back.

“Excellent Stay”

Reviewed 26 Jan 2012

We had a wonderful stay at The Studio. Simon & Katie are very friendly and charming landlords and nothing was to much trouble. We would certainly stay there again. It was everything we were looking for. Staying in the winter meant we could use the log burning fire absolutely lovely. The location to town was great. We cannot speak highly enough about it. Go stay, you wont regret it. Tracey & David Williams - 26/1/2012 - Thailand

“Very nice place- a little out of the way”

Reviewed 11 Jul 2011

Very comfortable place. Perfect for us- bed upstairs sleeps a couple and pull out couch on main floor also sleeps 2. Great little kitchen if you want to eat in. Owners very friendly and helpful. Walk to the house is up hill about 20 minutes so taking everything we needed for the day in town is the only negative.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your kind comments. That hill can be a chore at the end of a long day! I should say though that the walk is 10 minutes from the town centre and 20 minutes from the regatta course.

“Simple but comfortable and stylish, The Studio suited our needs perfectly.”

Reviewed 9 Jul 2011

My partner and I needed a base for exploring the Henley-on-Thames area. We wanted somewhere simple but comfortable and quiet, close enough to walk into town but with sufficient facilities that we could choose to stay in if we wanted to. The Studio at Westfield House suited our needs perfectly and we would happily stay again. The property owner provided very helpful service before and during the trip, without ever being intrusive. The property has a very quiet aspect, being close to the Northern edge of town while still being an easy walk to town centre. Having a dedicated parking space right outside the property is a bonus. For a longer stay, access to a washing machine would be a desirable feature that I believe was not present (though the property owner might oblige).

Owner's reply: Thank you for your kind comments. Due to space limitations it was necessary to decide between a dishwasher or a washing machine. Based upon our own letting experience, a dishwasher is more useful. We have provided access to our own washing machine on occasion or there is a good laundrette available in Henley itself.

“Very clean and cosy”

Reviewed 16 May 2011

Very personalized service from the owner/s Mr. and Mrs Simon Garrod. The place is superbly clean and cosy. Adding to the fresh flowers, they even supplied enough food stuff for breakfast, what a pleasant surprise. Love their designer bathroom especially the power shower! and also well equipped kitchen. And for those with no transport! the cab svc here is superb, just a call away, very convenient. all the best Simon and Kate.
