The Baden-Württemberg region
Alongside historic cities such as Heidelberg, Freiburg or Tübingen, it is the carefully tended villages and the urban town centres which paint the true character of Baden Wuerttemberg. Great importance is attached to hospitality, and the people of Germany's southwest have a tremendous capacity for celebration and enjoyment. This love of life is reflected in the many wine and town festivals, fairs and street parties held all around the region. Different, but by no means less enjoyable, ways to spend leisure time are provided by a wide selection of parks and adventure pools, leisure centres, wildlife reserves and zoos, museums, working mills and mines, as well as monuments and memorials.
Heidelberg is a world-famous city and perennial tourist favorite with a justified international and national reputation as one of Germany's top tourist destinations. The city's urban development, its university life, many fine restaurants, shopping opportunities, cultural offerings and wide variety of annual events all contribute to the worldwide popularity of the city which even Goethe felt had something "quite ideal".
It is the blend of different, thoroughly contrasting characteristics that harmonize to make Heidelberg a fascinating and unique place. The charm of this interplay has inspired artists, stimulated scientists and is an unforgettable experience for all visitors to the city.
The town of Neckargemünd is situated at a distance of 10 km from the city of Heidelberg, upstream in the Neckar valley and in the middle of a vacation area which is part of the Neckar-Odenwald forest national park.
Also dubbed “Heidelberg’s beautiful sister”, Neckargemünd is located where the Elsenz stream joins the River Neckar. With its picturesque location, embedded in deciduous and coniferous forest, Neckargemünd is most popular not only as a residence but also as a holiday resort. Being well equipped with numerous sports- and recreational facilities, the town also features a lively cultural scene with local clubs contributing to a wide range of different activities.
See the old town centre, steeped in its 1000 year old history. Alleys, corners and numerous splendid half-timbered houses from the middle ages, the historic town wall as well as Reichenstein castle all bear witness to an eventful past. Dilsberg castle is most famous, catching the visitor’s eye from a distance.
A museum sheltered inside the old town hall depicts the history of Neckar shipping.
Apart from a wide range of cultural activities, the town along with its surrounding area also offers a host of destinations for cyclists and hikers. You will just love boat trips on the River Neckar, giving you appetite to use the town’s hotel- and restaurant facilities. Experience Neckargemünd as a starting point to discover the “Neckartal Odenwald forest” national park, the “Kraichgau” and “Kurpfalz” region, not to mention the “Burgenstrasse” (castle road) and of course the romantic town of Heidelberg.

"A very charming apartment in a perfect river side location."
I stayed here for a short break with my family and it was just what we were looking for. Views from the apartment was fantastic and we enjoyed stepping out so close to the town centre, with just a short walk to some lovely bakeries, bars and restaurants nearby. The apartment has easy access to some great river side walks. In terms of the apartment itself, it was comfortable, clean and charming with some very handy extra storage space under the slanting roof edges. I would definitely recommend it.

"Excellent value a stone's throw from the Neckar river"
Spent a week at Alte Feuerwehr recently. The apartment suited our needs perfectly. It was located right on the Neckar river with nice views from all rooms. Very quiet at night. Good bakery and cafe nearby. Good wifi access. Excellent hot water and shower. Apartment was well fitted out, with ample room for 4-5 people. Great access to transport, either by boat, train or bus. Only 15 minutes into Heidleberg. There are so many things to do in the area that a week felt too short. There is a cycle shop in town, which hires bikes for lovely rides along the river. Highly recommended!

"This apartment is well situated, comfortable and makes a perfect base for exploring the region around Heidelberg"
We were well looked after and the property fitted our needs perfectly. It is well equipped and comfortable and the views over the river and countryside are excellent. The location is very convenient, close to the station and the bars and restaurants of Neckargemund, and river cruise boats stop just a few minutes' walk from the apartment. There is a lot to see in the area, Heidelberg is a boat ride, bus ride or train ride away, and there are beautiful walks and cycles around Neckargemund.

"Lovely village in the Obenwald near Heidelberg"
Neckargemund is a charming little village lining the banks of the Neckar river - a very short train or bus ride from Heidelberg. We were there for two weeks and cycled the 12km into Heidelberg most days to do a university short course. The two bedroom apartment we stayed in used to be the old fire-station and faced directly out onto the river. It was a delight to watch the barges slowly making their way upriver and we regularly would take our wine glasses and sit on the banks to watch them go by. Martin couldn't have been more helpful, our only issues were that the internet was a little irregular and the bed was super squeaky. Lots of cafes and pubs within walking distance and a little market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. If you're into walking (fabulous forest with tracks all around the village), cycling or just want to soak up the atmosphere of a small, friendly German village then I'd highly recommend a stay here.
