Description

The Shepherd's Shack
This gorgeous recently restored 2 story holiday cottage is within the farmyard & is where some of the Shepherd's stopping here at Drover's Rest used to stay. It is a far cry from the shack it used to be! But we have kept its name to remember its lovely origins. The Shepherd's Shack holiday cottage now has 2 en-suite bedrooms & a wonderful woodburner in the lounge. It overlooks the farm's courtyard & you will also have gorgeous views of the sheep grazed common & stream from the rear windows. If you are persistent you may even spot the badgers from the badger sett nearby or even crafty Mr Fox too. The ducks love waddling past the the Shepherd's shack holiday cottage on their way down to the Pond each morning & evening. Sleeps 2-4 plus 2 well behaved dogs.

We also have
Drover's Cottage (see separate listing)
Drover's cottage is stunningly located with your very own orchard, stream & woodland.

Drover's cottage is stunningly located with your very own orchard, stream & woodland. Drover's have been stopping here for centuries on their way to the London markets. Idyllically rural yet only 3 miles from the bustling book & festival town of Hay on wye. If you want complete isolation then this old Drover's Holiday Cottage with magical views across the valley is definately the one for you. It's located a mere 400m away from the farmhouse & has been beautifully restored enhancing its original rustic features such as warm limewashed walls, arrow slit windows, heated flagstone floors, open fireplace, huge floor to ceiling windows, an open fireplace & an aga to name a few. Sleeps 2-4 plus up to 2 well behaved dogs. If you feel lonely you could always walk over & join us in the communal Hayloft Barn for some fun!

We also have super posh safari tents that have 2 separate bedrooms
1 double & 1 twin, fully kitted kitchen with proper fridge & electricity and your very own underfloor heated shower! No sharing

Location description from owner

The Wales region

Venturing away from the farm.......

Hay-on-wye is 3 miles away & is reknowned for its book festival held once a year for 10 days from 22nd May this year. If you have not been its a must. This is when the town heaves!! 250, 000 descend on the tiny little market town bringing an electic mix of people to our rural midst. The festival has meant that the town has been able to sustain itself & is today one of the best villages in Wales with thriving shops, restaurants & bars that will rival London for its foodiness.

Hay-on-Wye

Top 10 things to do when you are here.. if you can tear yourself away from your Farm holiday with us ...
1. Taste the local sheeps milk ice-cream from Shepherds in the heart of town. We also sell it in the farm shop.
2. Walk up Hay Bluff or Sir Hereford's Knob (yes it is called that!) & enjoy the magical views.
3. Wander the book-stores (favourite is Booths!) & antique shops in Hay (there are over 30 bookstores!) The Old Electric shop, owned by a friend, is a must for its vintage treasures & wonderful cafe. They also run a cocktail bar every now & then, so be sure to look out for the next one.
4. Vist the farmers market on a Thursday in the town centre. Lovely local produce. Try Alex Gooch's sourdough bread.
5. Taste the local cider and cheese (My favourite is Dunkertons Cider and Neals Yard Creamery (owned by Parents from our kids school & love how they named one after their son Finn!) both available from the Deli - you can visit Dunkertons for a tour & buy a case of cider to take back!)
6. Eat at the wonderful eateries that surround you - our favourites (Booths Cafe in a bookstore, The Old Electric Shop, The Rivercafe in Glasbury, The Three Tunns (oldest Pub in Hay) & owned by friends, The Granary owned by our neighbour, The Griffin in Felin Fach, The Bridge Inn in Micheal Church, The Pandy in Dorstone, Hollybush (does not look good outside but great thai & nepalese food) for something a bit more special try The Stagg Inn in Titley (Michelin Star), their cheese board is something special.
7. Wander down the River Wye in a canoe (wye valley canoes) or blackmountain activity centre take younger kids canoeing too.
8. Try your hand at climbing Black Mountain Activities or a bit further but larger and scarier!! Llangorse Activity Centre
9. Ride a Horse in the Brecon Beacons try our friends at transwales
10. Take a ride on the Brecon Mountain Train and then drive through the mountains to Cardiff - beautiful drive but an easy hours drive
