Location description from owner

The New South Wales region

Hawks Nest is a relatively quiet holiday area for those that want to relax. Coastal fishing is a major attraction.

Nelsons Bay is a short ferry boat ride across the bay, and is a major township with a large number of facilities, shops, restaurants, tours and catering for those that like the active nightlife.

The closest major city is Newcastle (1 hour drive - 80km) for all major facilities

The Hunter Valley area is famous for its wines, and is worth a 1.5 hour drive to the vineyards.

The local area provides for golf, bush & beach walking, boating, fishing, Quad bike riding and many other activities.
Fresh Seafood is a major plus in the area.

There are many restaurants in Tea Gardens that provide superb dishes of the local catch, all washed down with an excellent wine.s

HAWKS NEST - TEA GARDENS ATTRACTIONS

River, lake, or ocean - the pristine waters of the Myall River and Port Stephens beckon

Charter a tinny or hire a kayak go down-river past shipwrecks and sandy islands into Port Stephens. Here thrill as a pod of wild dolphins and their calves follow you like playful puppies.

Perhaps head upriver where Cabbage Leaf Palms shade the banks. Pass fishing huts and sub-tropical rainforest. Then at the fishing village of Tamboi enter Broadwater, the first of the lakes.

This is the largest fresh and brackish water system on the New South Wales coast. You will find sandy, shallow shores, sheltered spots, and safe swimming.

On the oceanside, you will find miles of pearl white beach on an island-studded sea. Dive operators take you to places like Bubble Cave and Looking Glass.

FISHING

Hire a runabout and drift for flathead in the sandy channels of the river. Be at Dark Point rocky headland at dawn to land taylor and you have the added bonus of a beach sunrise.

You can fish off a pier or join a big game fishing charter and try your luck at yellowfin, mackeral, and marlin. Most are tagged for release after the sport.

After a fantastic morning of fishing Rick Wraight and Gordon Granger had a lovely meal of Australian Salmon that night!
