Accommodation is spread over three floors, with the ground floor devoted to common living areas, five bedrooms and three bathrooms on the 1st floor, and a fourth bathroom and landing library on the 2nd floor. The generous living areas – large drawing room, sitting/TV room, study, and dining hall – are full of Asian antiques and artefacts, handsome furniture and comfy sofas. The kitchen is equipped for people who love to cook, and has a large farmhouse table for family meals overlooking the apple orchard. From the dining hall (with table for 10), bi-fold doors open onto a large deck with wisteria-covered pergola and teak table with eight chairs and a bench. Barnfield House is ideal for families and friends who wish to spend time together in gracious, comfortable, relaxing surroundings. We've hosted multi-generation family gatherings, guests celebrating significant birthdays, and friends' reunions. Our youngest guest was a few months old, our oldest close to 90.
Not for nothing is Hawkhurst called the 'crossroads for the Weald'; It's the perfect base for exploring the many attractions of Kent and Sussex that keep families of all ages well entertained. Countryside drives reveal picturesque villages and pubs, including the Oak & Ivy Inn, famous gathering place for the infamous 18th century Hawkhurst smugglers. In addition to the famous National Trust and English Heritage historic castles, houses and gardens that attract many visitors to the area (Sissinghurst Gardens and the gardens of Great Dixter shouldn't be missed), there are many other experiences to consider, such as the Observatory Science Centre at Herstmonceux, Bodium Castle and Hever Castle (home to Henry VIII's Ann Boleyn), and myriad museums covering everything from musical instruments to vintage cars, 1066 battlefields to 18th century smugglers. After all this activity, guests love returning to the comfort of Barnfield House. Our 1938 home – made of Canadian cedar from its floorboards to roof shingles – has its own history: the large pond in the garden is thought to be the remains of an iron ore site from the middle ages!

- Very Good
This was our second stay in Barnfield House. Beautiful with every home comfort you need and more. Fabulous views. We shall certainly be returning.
“Great house in a stunning location”
I knew we were going to have a great weekend the first time I heard from Jenny. She was very quick to respond, answered all my questions and provided plenty of information about the area to ensure we could plan a great break. I was met by the house-keeper who kindly showed me around the house and ensured I knew where everything was. There was also a lovely welcome pack! There were 9 of us in the group and the house was perfect for that number. There was enough space for everyone to be in the same room together or to go our separate ways if we wanted a break. The deck was a great place to soak up some sun and enjoy the large backyard (which is also great for throwing a frisbee!) The house had everything you could need for a stay. The kitchen was well equipped and there was a BBQ for the day we had sun! It was my birthday during our stay and Jenny had provided a list of restaurants in the area. We ate at The Great House, which was a 30 minute walk from Barnfield and was a relaxed place to enjoy some very tasty food. For people looking for a beautiful house for a large group I cannot recommend Barnfield enough. Jenny was great to deal with and I hope to be back soon!
“A wonderful, spacious home for a relaxing break”
Barnfield House is a lovely place, with plenty of rooms to allow everyone the space they need. Add this to the outside space, views across the Kent countryside and it is difficult ot know what more one would want from a place.
“Barnfield House is generous, gracious, welcoming and hospitable”
I felt embraced by the energy of the house as soon as I entered: there is an almost Asian sense of hospitality and welcome to the house even though it is set in a quintessentially English part of the Kent countryside. Barnfield House is spacious and gracious enough for a large house party and cosy and comfortable enough for an intimate holiday away. Beautiful sweeping views over the Kent countryside, a country style kitchen, drawing room designed for long evenings of conversation and companionship by the fire, some well appointed bedrooms - i could not commend a stay in this House more highly. We will be back!
