Description from owner

On a quiet leafy lane 1½ miles from Diptford, a south-facing cottage surrounded by 2 acres of the friendly owners' woodland (circular walk). The pretty stream that once fed this former mill trickles soothingly past their linked but private extension and continues outside your own enclosed, sunny, gravelled garden (table/chairs, barbecue). Across the lane, grassy area (picnic bench) beside the stream (unfenced here, care needed) for relaxing amongst peace, nature and birdsong. Simple and stylish furnishings, white walls and pine floors (rugs). Six steps up to hall. Good-sized living room (TV/DVD) with open fire. Dining room with woodburner (logs provided) and fridge-freezer. Neat slate-floored kitchen (dishwasher, washing machine, tumble drier, microwave, electric cooker). Open tread stairs (stairgates) to first-floor landing (quiet reading area with armchair and balustrade) and three bedrooms (limited clothes-hanging space) – two double (one with 5' bed) and a twin (footboards), all with

The Devon region

The South Hams: southernmost Devon; between the river Dart and river Tamar and south of Dartmoor, lush farmland and wooded river valleys turning to beautiful estuaries, its coast very beautiful and remarkably well preserved – sandy beaches and mighty cliffs between those estuaries, amazingly little sprawling modern ugliness. Inland too, away from main roads, it remains surprisingly peaceful.

Among special coastal places are Dartmouth; sheltered Blackpool Sands; Slapton's long curve of pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon; the cliffs about Start Point and Prawle Point, Bolt Head and Bolt Tail; East Portlemouth's beach and Salcombe's location and views; Thurlestone proving that family seaside places don't need to be brash; Bigbury's huge sands and the fun of getting to Burgh Island; waterside, oak-wood-sheltered Noss Mayo/Newton Ferrers; many others, less easy of access, are for you to discover.

Kingsbridge and Totnes, both old, attractive and small, are the towns at the area's heart; Plymouth – the West Country's biggest town, with Naval base, ferry port, theatre, cinemas, history, Hoe (great views) and Barbican (where the life is) – is on the area's edge. Dartington Hall is an arts centre (films, plays, music, dance) with lovely gardens. Pleasure cruisers ply the Kingsbridge estuary and Dart and Tamar rivers.

Harberton

Diptford: village in lush South Hams farmland above the River Avon valley (fishing). Totnes (town), 5 miles; Dartington Hall (arts centre, craft shop), 7; Kingsbridge, 8. The sea (beaches) at Blackpool Sands, Bigbury-on-Sea or Thurlestone, about 11 miles; Dartmouth (town), 12; Dartmoor, 5. Very central for lots to see/do. Nearest pub, 2 miles.
