Location description from owner

The Region of Murcia region

The Region of Murcia has miles of sandy beaches – the Costa Calida ( Warm Coast) - rugged mountains and lakes - fertile plains capable of growing pretty much anything from salad vegetables to cotton and rice, oranges and lemons to grapes and apricots. Murcia has all of this as well as the healthiest climate in Europe (according to the World Health Organisation) with more than 320 days of sunshine per year.

The fabulous fiestas, wonderful food, fabulous scenery, excellent beaches and warmth of the local people all go together to make this an exceptional region of Spain.

For years the region of Murcia did not have easy access of the other regions. However, in recent years the Region of Murcia has gained grants from the EU which have been wisely spent on a system of new roads. Also in the past few years Murcia airport (San Javier) has become increasingly popular with low cost airlines from the UK. Murcia has looked at the Costa del Sol to the South and the southern Costa Blanca to the North and has learned much from the overbuilding in those areas. Murcia therefore, has very strict planning laws that are aimed at protecting the beauty of the region and it has established several natural parks.

Yes there is development here, but the majority of this is on World class golf resorts and also beachfront property on the La Manga Strip. Apart from the La Manga Strip, No High-Rise properties are allowed and parks and green areas have to be left within developments. Murcia is a region that is growing – fast, but remains a challenge to explore.

Sucina and the surrounding area:

The recently renovated Church - Nuestra Senora Del Roasario - sits at the centre of Sucina.

It is surrounded by many small streets, all worthy of a curious exploration since many of the "ordinary" looking houses are in fact shops or small businesses.

There is a market next to the Town Hall on a Monday.

Mar Menor

Sucina is close to the Costa Calida which is perhaps best known for the Mar Menor, the largest natural Salt water lake in the World. Visiting this unique feature makes the trip out here to this part of Spain to be of value in its own right.

The World Health organisation has identified this as one of the cleanest areas in Europe, largely due to the lack of any pollution, which with an annual average temperature of 170 C, makes it a “must visit” on anyone's travel list from the UK, especially in December and January.

Other than mile upon mile of clean beaches, warm water from February through to October which only goes down to a depth of 7m at its deepest point, and an average of 315 days sunshine a year, the west side of the lake (closest to the mainland) is relatively unspoilt and tastefully developed.

This literally is a water sport paradise for those who enjoy this form of entertainment. There are 20 sites dotted around the shores of Mar Menor offering the complete range of sailing, water skiing, scuba diving, wind surfing, kite boarding etc. activities.

Los Alcazares

Los Alcazares is only 10 minutes away from San Javier and has numerous attractions of its own. The Sea Promenade is very attractive, and a walk down this in the early evening is as a relaxing experience as you could hope for.

Needless to say there are numerous local tapas bars & small family run restaurants to savour when your appetite gets the better of you. In addition to the white sandy beaches, there are a couple of sites to see as well including the (16th century) Tower of El Rame and the Municipal Aeronautical Museum.

For those who enjoy the night life, the area near the central square has numerous bars and venues offering musical entertainment late into the night.

San Pedro del Pinatar

The Regional Park of San Pedro del Pinatar is at the Northern end of the Mar Menor and is only 30 mins drive away. This is well known as a ideal location to observe migratory birds such as the Pink Flamingos in autumn.

Keen twitchers can delight in observing zampullines, gallinets, gulls, royal herons, owls and the small Fartet which live here throughout the year. It has its own Wetlands Research and Conservation centre, which also houses the Parks's visitor centre. The area is crisscrossed with well maintained walk and cycle ways, which will allow you to visit the pools, dikes, dunes and pine groves which comprise one of the most recognised ecosystems in this part of Murcia.

A of other things to do in this area are to visit the Windmills of Quintin and La Calcetera and the Stately homes of Baron of Benifayo and the House of El Reloj. For those looking to snap up a bargain, go along to the Fish Auction at La Lonja, before heading off to peruse the mysteries contained at the Museum Collection of the sea.

Natural salt is still produced in this area and as a consequence of its medicinal qualities and the curative properties of the Mar Menor itself, those looking for the ultimate therapy and mud treatment will be somewhat spoilt for choice.

San Javier

San Javier (pronounced San Hagh vi ere) is the nearest town to Sucina. It is well worth a visit if driving straight from the airport since there are numerous large continental style supermarkets in the town, where you can buy everything you need in bulk before heading off to our apartment.

There is a Mercado on the road in from the Airport and an Iceland for those preferring more well known brands and food items.

The town has several museums and a church that offer an insight into local life.

There are several “Woks”, in the town, offering as much Chinese as you can eat for about 10 Euros. The best one we found was the one next to the Mercado on the N332 near the Calle de la Isla de Lobos.
