The Murcia region

Murcia is one of the smaller regions of Spain. However, it has been said that within it’s boundaries it encapsulates all that is Spain.

The Region of Murcia has miles of sandy beaches – the Costa Calida ( Warm Coast ) - rugged mountains and lakes - fertile plains capable of growing pretty much anything from salad vegetables to cotton and rice, oranges and lemons to grapes and apricots. Murcia has all of this as well as the healthiest climate in Europe (according to the World Health Organisation) with more than 320 days of sunshine per year.

Places to Visit

Murcia

The regional capital and University City on the river Segura is around 20 minutes away by car. This vibrant city was founded by the Moors in 825AD and boasts a beautiful Cathedral and University, as well as Botanic Gardens, Museums and other historic buildings around its narrow, streets full of character. Shops include El Corte Ingles, (the Spanish equivalent of Selfridges or Fenwick’s etc) and numerous designer label shops on the Calles Traperia and Plateria, dozens of great restaurants and a lively nightlife, especially during fiestas and carnivals. In recent EEC research, the region of Murcia was singled out as the most economically dynamic in Spain and this is being reflected in the rapid development of Murcia as a tourist and cultural destination. For lovers of nature, the Sierra Espuna National Park is 25-30 minutes drive away.

Cartagena

Around 25kms from Hacienda is Spain’s oldest port. Cartagena is one of Spain’s oldest cities, and still of major maritime importance to Spain, both commercially and militarily. A multitude of civilisations have left their mark on the city as numerous archaeological sites and museums will testify. In the heart of the city is a modern shopping area, which spills down past the tapas bars to the recently revitalised harbour. Here you will find the World’s oldest submarine on display, built in 1884 by a local man Isaac Peral.

Santiago de la Ribera & Lo Pagan

Two traditional Spanish seaside towns at the Northern end of the Mar Menor. The beach of Santiago de la Ribera is lined by tall palm trees along the promenade and there are numerous shops, bars and cafes to explore. There is also a new out of town shopping centre called Dos Mares on the outskirts of Santiago de la Ribera, whilst Lo Pagan has a lively fish market on the Esplanade every morning except Sunday.

La Manga Club

Just a 30 minute drive from Haceinda Riquelme is the world famous resort of La Manga, which boasts 3 championship golf courses, 28 tennis courts and a football academy set in a 1400 acre corner of the Costa Calida. It also contains the 5 star Regency Hyatt Hotel where the rich and famous spend their vacations. Look carefully and you might some premier league footballers or a TV star. La Manga is where the BBC series ‘Superstars’ was filmed.

Cabo de Palos

Immediately recognisable by its famous lighthouse, Cabo de Palos is situated at the mainland end of the La Manga strip around a quaint harbour. It has plenty of bars and seafood restaurants and a great view of La Manga. On Sundays there is a market, where you can find plenty of fresh local produce and other bargains. For diving enthusiasts, the Hormigas Islands near Cabo de Palos have been declared a Marine Reserve due to their exceptional beauty and the conservation of the sea floor, but they are also acknowledged by scuba divers as being one of Spain’s premier dive sites, due to the large number of unfortunate ships that have come to grief in the rocky waters around the area.

Orihuela & Orihuela Coast

About 45 minutes North East of Hacienda Riquelme is the city of Orihuela. In centuries past, Orihuela was the Political and administrative capital of the region and still displays many remnants of its proud cultural and religious heritage. Inland from the coast, Orihuela is one of those cities that doesn’t look much from the outskirts, but which blossoms on closer inspection, with a medieval centre stuffed full of historic treasures. Every week in July they stage a mock battle in remembrance of the battles between the Moors and Christians. There are still lots of traditional narrow streets, plus bars and a busy market for you to browse.

Lorca

About 30 mins drive away is, Lorca, Spain’s largest town, is a lively and busy place all year round and it Semana Santa (Holy Week) celebrations are the most lavish in Murcia. Huddled around the ruins of its castle, Lorca retains many beautiful buildings such as the Collegiate Church of San Patricio and impressive town houses and mansions that remind us of it’s opulent past. Lorca also plays host to an annual Rock Festival, Lorca Rock, featuring bands such as Iron Maiden, the Scorpions, Slayer, Lacuna Coil and Dream Theatre.

The fabulous fiestas, wonderful food, fabulous scenery, excellent beaches and warmth of the local people all go together to make this an exceptional region of Spain. However, despite its growing popularity, the region remains relatively unspoilt compared to the more crowded Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca. Fruits and market-garden products are important to the Murcian economy, and are exported all over Europe. Murcia is also famous for its excellent tapas.

Hacienda Riquelme Golf Resort

The Hacienda (large country mansion) at this resort was previously the home of the Riquelme family. This splendid building has been converted and extended to provide the typical town centre facilities you would expect on any Polaris World resort including bar, restaurant, supermarket, pro shop and club house.

Children’s play area

There are several play areas. The closest one to our apartment is a 5 – 7 minute walk away. If you come out of the front entrance and take a left towards the supermarket and you will find it on your left.

Courtesy Bus

All the Polaris World Resorts are linked by a regular bus service available to all residents. This bus service further increases your leisure options by making more restaurants, bars, shops and sports facilities, etc. available just a short journey away.

The nearby town of Sucina offers town facilities within easy reach. There are a number of golf courses planned and in the course of construction within the immediate area including the adjacent Peralaja Golf. The city of Murcia is just 20 minutes from the resort. San Javier (Murcia) airport is 18 minutes drive and the new Corvera airport will be 20 minutes away. A new highway between the coast and Murcia city opened in January 2010 and passes just 2km from the resort making Hacienda Riquelme resort very accessible.

Just outside the resort is a train station on the single line between Cartagena and Murcia city. The station closed some years ago and the residents are now petitioning for the re-opening of the station. If successful it will mean a 30 minute ride to Cartagena, a 25 minute journey into the centre of Murcia city and a connection to the high speed rail network throughout Europe.

For keen cyclists there are specialist bike tracks from the gate of the resort linking throughout the region to the coast and to Murcia city. Cycling is a huge sport in the area and you will see many of cyclists.

For walkers there are flat walks from the gate of the resort on quiet roads past the orange groves. For the more adventurous the mountains just behind the resort offer miles of marked hiking paths. The route from Collado de los Ginovinos to the peak of Cabezo del Puerto (pictured) covers 25km (7 hrs 40 minutes), climbing from 385 metres to 528 metres.

The views are stunning, stretching across the plain to the Mar Menor sea and beyond to the Mediterranean.

There is a new Water Park (Terra Aqua Murcia) and Animal Park (Terra Natura Murcia) in Murcia which is a great day out for the family and only 25 minutes away by car.

At the next door golf course Horse Riding lessons and treks can be booked.
