Location description from owner

The Laconia Region

• The whole area which is called Mani resembles a museum full of traditional stone made towers and castles, some of them reconstructed or renovated and others in ruins, stone-built small chapels dating back to Byzantine times, many of whom are decorated with rare mosaics. Mani includes mostly the middle foot of Peloponese, a kind of peninsula into the Lakonian Bay and Messina Bay. It has a long history dating back to the Dorians (1100 BC). The prefecture of Lakonia with its capital Sparta was known from the Antiquity when only the two big cities-states, Athens and Sparta, existed. There is a long history and many historical monuments can be found in the area also dating back the Byzantine times. The best seasons for visiting the region is Spring and Autumn, as well as Winter, which is fairly mild. The Summer is hot enough, suitable for swimming in the clear blue water of Vathi beach. The beach is preserved and protected by environmental organisations because the Caretta-Caretta turtle lays on the sand its eggs, towards end of August to beginning of September.

Gytheio

• The Vathi area has many restaurants with tasty local food and live traditional Greek music during the summer evenings. Some of them: “The Taverna of Maria” with home-made recipes, “Hannover” with up scaled dishes and “Thalami” with fish and special dishes.

• Numerous bays for swimming and fishing and small villages with fish restaurants on the beach and on the rocks can be found in Kamares, Kalyvia and Skoutari.

• Ageranos is located between two large towns, the picturesque Gytheio, which resembles the Aegean islands, and the stone-built town of Areopolis, centre of the Greek Revolution of 1821 against the Turks.

• Small excursions to Mistra, a castle with many Byzantine churches, Monemvasia, a small town in built into a Venecian fortress on a steep peninsula, and Diros, a cave of stalactites and stalagmites, as well as Elafonisos and Kithyra islands are highly advised.

“Fabulous house, fabulous view- a gem!!”

Reviewed 20 Nov 2012

The house is set up a hill, with magnificent views onto the bay, with large, well tended gardens- it's quite and peaceful, ideal for relaxing!! There are numerous outdoor seating areas and large verandas, you hardly spend anytime indoors, which is a shame as it is a truly spacious house, lovingly decorated and very homely, also it's cool even in August. You can see that a lot of love and attention went into this house, and you will feel at home, Elisabeth is on hand for any advice you may need, and she will make you feel welcome for sure. No problems in communicating either as she speaks such good english! The nearest beach and resort is 5 minutes by car; there are some great restaurants in that area and good tavernas and cafes on the beach. The beach is vast, wide and long. The greatest bonus was that even in the peak time of summer the beach was not overcrowded, something that is hard to find anywhere else! The sea is safe for even small children, and very clean. This area of Mani is beautiful, fascinating and you won't be short of day trips to do. It's not touristy by any means, which makes it more charming and authentic. You definitely won't see hordes of European tourists, it's truly very laid back and very greek!

“Ein schön eingerichtetes Landhaus zum wohlfühlen”

Reviewed 11 Nov 2012
