Location description from owner

The Bearn region

The fusion of lush green countryside, majestic mountains and miles of Atlantic coastline has made Aquitaine one of the most popular destinations in France, offering thrill seekers, sun worshippers and those craving true relaxation an almost overwhelming range of things to do From surfing, body boarding and swimming to simply savouring the mouth-watering regional food. Occupying a unique land that stretches from Bordeaux down to the rugged and beautiful mountains of the northern Pyrenees and the Basque Country, you can immerse yourself in all that ocean and land have to offer. Bayonne, Biarritz, St Jean-de-Luz, Pau and Lourdes are all within a day trip from the village.

Gurs

You can choose to spend your days fishing, playing tennis, cycling or exploring the valleys and forests on foot – or even by kayak or canoe.
Navarrenx hosts the World Champion Salmon Fishing competition in the magnificent river, the Gave d'Oloron where you can also try canoeing, rafting and kayaking.
If you prefer walking or cycling there are hundreds of kilometres of quiet roads and well marked forest routes. The iconic Tour de France arrives in Pau on the 16 & 18 July along with the lively Cavalcade.
Horse riding and hot air ballooning are available locally too.
Most summer week-ends Fêtes are held in local villages and towns where you can join in the fun & games.
Close by is the church of Hôpital Saint Blaise - a World Heritage site - a historic stop on the ancient Santiago de Compostela pilgrim route.

“Beautiful mountains excellent accommodation perfect hosts.”

Reviewed 9 Jan 2014

Really enjoyed the stunning walks in the nearby mountains. Great places to eat traditional food, a true experience of rural France. Easy to travel to many interesting places Biarritz and Northern Spain a treat. The house garden and hosts make you feel at home and extremely welcome. Great to have pool, bikes and games available on demand. Would easily recommend to family and friends. Choose your dates to coincide with local traditional events and be part of a real French life. Hope you enjoy as much as we did.

“A 5 star experience all round…superb villa for chilling or a great training holiday for those that want it..”

Reviewed 8 Jan 2014

It is the great welcome you receive and the quality and versatility of this holiday experience that keeps us coming back and we are booking in again this year … Paul and Cathy are fantastic hosts - both invisible and there exactly when you want or need them and that is the art of their success. We have been twice now to Maison Mirande looking for a family holiday but also the opportunity to explore the region, do some swimming and cycling, eat good food, relax and generally recharge our batteries. In addition we wanted to get fitter and use the opportunity to do some exercise….Paul and Cathy helped us with at both ends of the spectrum - with Paul helping my husband to extend his training off the back of the tour d'etap and Cathy helping me get back into some rhythm of regular exercise coming from a pretty low base …….and they both really know their stuff. BUT if you aren't fussed about the training element then please keep reading because this was ALSO a brilliant family holiday - The Villa is fantastic with great bathrooms with fluffy White Company towels and a new kitchen with everything you need… Modern and super clean and just works…. The garden is fully enclosed with lots of sunny and shady areas to sunbathe or for dozing off in the hammock ....The main draw though has to be the 25m alarmed and heated pool - its low chlorine & all one depth - so great for a bit of water volleyball / doing your training laps or just a bit of leisure swimming & our children made full use of it! We have in turn taken our own bikes and also hired some from Cathy and Paul and cycling whether for training or leisure is just beautiful in this area of France. The region is very authentic with a great local restaurant in the Village now as well as all the facilities of Navrannx just on your doorstep. We also explored Pau, and if you don't mind a bit of a drive then Toulouse is a day trip and has some great kids attractions - our son particularly like the space museum and I went around all the galleries..... There are plenty of good local restaurants if you don't want to cook, but we also found the Villa & garden to be so relaxing that we ended up staying put far more than we planned - just enjoying a bit of family time and of course if you can leave out your bread bag overnight and have the local boulangerie man leave you a nice crusty baguette for breakfast each morning then it is a little tempting to hang around - Thank goodness for the cycling and swimming otherwise the baguettes would be making the clothes a little tight by the end of the stay! what can I say - we will be going back again and again and I'm a bit afraid of putting this review up in case we end up not being able to go exactly when we want because it's truly a hidden gem and rapidly becoming our special place… Paul and Cathy will definitely look after you and make you want to go back a second time ..
